Germany face a double injury setback with Torsten Frings and Lukas Podolski struggling to be fit to face Portugal in Thursday's Euro 2008 quarter-final.

Holding midfielder Frings is a major doubt with fractured ribs, while Podolski has a calf problem.

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is likely to pick his strongest team after making eight changes in his side's final group game against Switzerland.

Nuno Gomes will lead the attack with Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao supporting.

Armando Petit and Joao Moutinho will anchor the midfield with Deco in the playmaker role, while Jose Bosingwa, Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe and Paulo Ferreira make up the back four in front of goalkeeper Ricardo.

None of the players who came in for the 2-0 defeat against Switzerland made sufficient impact to break into Scolari's starting line-up.

Asked if he had considered changes for the German match, Scolari said: "I could, but I'm not going to change anything. In principle it will be the same team."

Germany coach Joachim Low insisted his backroom staff would do everything in their power to ensure Frings starts.

"Since Torsten is such an important player for our team, our medical staff will exhaust all possibilities to get him fit," said Low.

"The decision about if he plays against Portugal will only come on Thursday."

Frings sustained the injury during the second-half of Germany's 1-0 win over Austria on Monday.

Podolski picked up his problem in the same game and his absence would be a huge blow as he has scored three of the Germans' four goals in the tournament.

"He definitely won't train on Tuesday and it's going to be tight for Thursday," said Low.

"The medical department will do everything they can to get him fit but he had real problems in the second half against Austria."

Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was suspended against Austria, could earn a starting role against the Portuguese.

The pitch in Basel for the game has been relaid after heavy rain and Germany have decided not to train on the St Jakob Park turf the day before the game.

"It was entirely our decision to forego the session," said German Football Association spokesman Stephan Brause.

I think Portugal are favourites to go through - they have been good in the tournament and going forward they are such a threat i wonder how Germany will cope with it. Germany have not done too badly BUT Gomez has been dissapointing so far so it will be interesting if Louw drops him

It should be a cracking game

Portugal have to much all round quality for this german side an i can see a easy win here. Apart from Ballack and Lahm the rest of german side is average at best. Klose and podolski will need to come to party if a shock occurs.

Totally different circumstances, particularly cause it was a 3rd place playoff so players who hadnt really gotten a game got a run that day, plus Portugal are a much stronger team now than they were then while Germany had home advantage.

I dont really mind either team - I do have an admiration for most things German although I do wish Germany were playing with a bit more enterprise but on the other hand Portugal do have a lot of quality players so Im not disappointed whoever wins. However a Portugal loss has the added bonus of Cronaldo waterworks

In the past I would say the organisation and strength of the German team would see them through, but this Portugese team are very talented and may be too much for the Germans this time around, especially given how poor the German centre halves have looked.

TEAMS

Portugal: Ricardo, Pepe, Ferreira, Carvalho, Bosingwa, Simao, Petit, Moutinho, Deco, Ronaldo, Nuno Gomes

Germany: Lehmann, Metzelder, Mertesacker, Lahm, Friedrich, Schweinsteiger, Rolfes, Hitzlsperger, Ballack, Podolski, Klose

Geordie Ahmed
19th June 2008, 23:36
No big surprise that Mario Gomez has been dropped - not too sure whats happening with the formation

Klose might be playing upfront on his own and with 5 in midfield - with Podolski and Schweinsteiger giving him support, then with Ballack, Rolfes and Hitzlsperger in the middle????

Geordie Ahmed
20th June 2008, 00:28
game is starting to open up now - should start seeing more chances soon

Geordie Ahmed
20th June 2008, 00:30
Ooooh - some good play by Deco who plays Simao through and he goes for goal BUT straight into the keeper who deals with it comfortably - probably should have centred that

Geordie Ahmed
20th June 2008, 00:33
Good play by Schweinsteger down the right - he wins a corner BUT nowt comes of it

Geordie Ahmed
20th June 2008, 00:34
Good defending there by Friedrich - Ronaldo would have been through BUT well defender. Corner to Portugal

Geordie Ahmed
20th June 2008, 00:35
Ooooooh - a great chance for Moutinho. Quality cross from Bosingwa down the right and Moutinho managed to knee it over

Geordie Ahmed

Geordie Ahmed
20th June 2008, 00:40

Geordie Ahmed

Although the Ballack goal killed it.

He clearly pushed the defender off before the header.
