Musharraf announces resignation
Updated at: 1405 PST, Monday, August 18, 2008
ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf announced in a televised address to the nation Monday that he had decided to resign after nine years in power to avoid the threat of impeachment.
"After viewing the situation and consulting legal advisers and political allies, with their advice I have decided to resign," a grim-faced Musharraf said, backed by Pakistani flags and a portrait of the country's founder.
"I leave my future in the hands of people."
Musharraf made the shock announcement after denying that any of the impeachment charges against him could stand and launching into a lengthy defence of his time in power.
"Not a single charge in the impeachment can stand against me," Musharraf said. "No charge can be proved against me because I never did anything for myself, it was all for Pakistan."
He said that there was now law and order in the country, that human rights and democracy had been improved and that Pakistan was now an crucial country internationally.
"On the map of the world, Pakistan is now an important country, by the grace of Allah," he said

All the usual nonsense. How industry was expanding, how democracy was flourishing, unemployment coming down, wealth increasing, education revolutionized under his rule; and of course how his life was always haazir for Pakistan.
And not a word about the electricity situation, the widespread corruption, the country being in virtual civil war, small provinces virtually in revolt.
What a loser!

I personally prefered him over Mr 10% and Ganjuu. But i think he's made the right choice to resign because unfortunately he lost the no's game and besides Pakistan could no longer afford instability in the Financial Markets. The nation could not afford anymore political instabiltiy, uncertainty, economic and financial turmoil which would have been the case if the impeachment proceedings went ahead. I would say the General has left in national interest, he ruled for 9 years and i think everything comes with a shelf life.
The good thing now that he has resigned is that PPP, PML (N) no longer have an excuse or someone to blame anymore. Geo will finally get off Mush's back now. Lets see what these guys in power have to offer now, how brilliantly will they handle the economy, will their polices towards the millitants be different or not? Will they support America or not? Would love to see this thread bumped up in another couple of years.
FINALLY HEHHEHHEHEHEHEHHE NO MORE DNA THAT SOAB.

Mush should have been hanged for high treason and ordering of killing innocent people. Not to mention the illegal abductions. Instead he resigns and now will live his life in luxury without a regret in the world.
Had he been punished for his crimes then it would have set an example for other miltary men not to over throw the government using their military might.

You are not alone Imran. If Mush didn't deserve capital punishment, nobody does. If we are going to continue punishing the poor (for small crimes) and letting the rich and powerful off (for much bigger crimes), we might as well just scrap the constitution and start living as tribals (jiski laathi uski bhains).

You have a very good point there. That is the biggest negative thing about democracy: what if you only have bad options. Even in US you have this situation. Obama and McCain are both falling over each other trying to convince the jews that they will serve them better.
But how do you propose to replace this system? In democracy at least you have a few choices (albeit bad); when somebody from the military usurps power, what choice does he give you?
So my friends, we have to stick to democracy no matter how bad it may be, unless you propose a better system.

They have only given priority to reinstatement of judges (which they still havent managed to do) n impeachment of Mush!? how does it affect a common man suffering 6 hrs loadsheddings..and high food, oil, gas prices??! Oxy thats besides the point. A nation can live wit meagre resources but they can't live without self-respect, pride, dignity. My hate for Musharaf is purely because I KNOW that had Musharaf persisted for a few more years, there would have been no Pakistan to talk about. It was just because there is no POPULAR independence movement in Pakistan, the people of Pakistan no matter what love their Countries integrity, otherwise it would have crumbled during Musharaf rule.
1) Oxy do you know why Bugti was assasinated.
2) Do you know why FATA operations were a massive failure in Mush term, whereas the same Operations are a MEGA success in this govt term with the People of the Area fighting alongside the Army against Talibaan.
3) Do you know why FBI Team was based in Islamabad, having active contacts with "Talibaan" and Baluch seperatist elements.
4) Do you know why wheat was exported two months before the new govt took over.
5) Do you know Why Oil Payments were deferred to the POL companies,
6) Why were loan installments not paid back and left for the new Govt.
I can go on and on. I had provided proof for Mush corruption, sadly Mush supporters didn't want to believe that their savior was corrupt MORALLY, FINANCIALLY.
When your president and COAS writes in his book that he sold Pakistanis to US and got dollars in return where does the nation stand in the committy of nations. When ladies like Afia siddique loose their mental health in Bagram, and the Pakistani Govt doesn't even blink an eye. (At least this govt tried to get her consular access)
And those who are sad at his departure, well they should silently apologize to the poor souls who were tortured, tormented and forgot.
