Australia's captain, Ricky Ponting, has been selected to lead the ICC's World ODI Team of the Year for the second year in a row, having been named in the side for third year running.
The honorary eleven was unveiled during the ICC Awards ceremony at The Westin Hotel in Dubai, after being chosen by a specially appointed selection panel chaired by West Indian batting legend, Clive Lloyd.
The team, in batting order is:
Herschelle Gibbs (SA)
Sachin Tendulkar (Ind)
Ricky Ponting (Aus, capt)
Younis Khan (Pak)
Andrew Symonds (Aus)
Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Ind, wk)
Farveez Maharoof (SL)
Daniel Vettori (NZ)
Brett Lee (Aus)
Mitchell Johnson (Aus)
Nathan Bracken (Aus)
12th man: Salman Butt (Pak)
Six countries are represented in the 12-man line-up and two players - Ricky Ponting of Australia and India's Sachin Tendulkar - also appeared in the World ODI Team of the Year in 2007. Indeed, Ponting appeared in the ODI Team of the Year for 2006 as well, while Andrew Symonds had previously been named in the 2005 team.
The presentations were made by the ICC chief match referee, Ranjan Madugalle. , Clive Lloyd, the chairman of the selection panel, said he felt the chosen team was full of variation and depth, with potential match-winners in every department.
Lloyd was joined on the panel by the former Australia captain, Greg Chappell, the recently retired South Africa allrounder Shaun Pollock, the former Sri Lanka opener Sidath Wettimuny, and the former Bangladesh batsman Athar Ali Khan. Statistics were available as a guide, but were not necessarily the overwhelming factor in the choices made.
The ICC ODI Team of the Year was one of two teams selected by the ICC selection panel along with the Test line-up. There were also eight individual prizes given at this year's ICC Awards.
The ICC Awards 2008 - presented in association with FICA - are based on the 12 months between August 9, 2007 and August 12, 2008. The ICC Awards ceremony is now in its fifth year and this is the first time it has been staged in Dubai, the home of the International Cricket Council. Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006) and Johannesburg (2007).

And Maharoof :)))
Maharoof averages 24 and has an ER of 4.65 in ODI cricket.
He may be a rubbish Test player but nothing so funny about him getting in an ODI XI. He also averages 19 with the bat, making him a bowling all-rounder in ODIs.

but what are his stats this year?
i think Yousuf wasn't taken into account and YK and Salman were because of Yousufs weight of runs against the likes of Bang and Zimbabwe... whereas the other 2 have scored against stronger opposition.

He averaged 17 with the ball in that period - which is his main discipline. Doesn't suit your argument, so, understandably, you have chosen to ignore that statistic.

are they going to play anyone or is it just for fun?

nope, its just a dream team xi.
it would be fun to see tho, icc odi xi vs the icc test xi.
or something like a super series, icc odi xi vs australia?
but ponting would be the captain of both teams then =P

u gotta be kidding me... Bracken is best in the bussiness... everytime he bowls, i have this feeling that he will take a wicket... have u seen his delivery in slow motion.. ball goes straight from his hand and without shuffling, seam lands straight on the pitch..no many bowlers can do that... for some reason he cant transform the same thing in Test matches..but then again, he is never even given a consistent run in Test matches.. he is only picked up when some1 is injured or used as an third bowler... Johnson is just going through a lean patch... 6 months before he was the big deal and after 2 average series and hez bad... though i agree with you on Gibbbs... Smith or Hayden are better choices than him.. for a spinner, Mendis the Magician has to be there

Bracken is simply an ideal bowler in ODI cricket where economy is really important. The guy is simply amazing with his line and length.

Sounding like the Indians Keith, celebrating some insignificant ODI victory instead of the ones that matter like World Cups.
I think Gibbs enjoyed mighty Mick Lewis more though :D

Listen guys, 'The Farveez well and truly deserves this spot in the line-up.
He also deserves to be the coach, captain, physio, opening batsman, opening bowler, and most agile fielder. He also has a face that enchants one and all and that must also be taken into account. Well done man, I believed in you from the onset.

to be fair I don't think anybody seriously minds the ICC awards, or most cricket awards for that matter...
