ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister accorded formal approval for the launching of Benazir Income Support Programme before Eid which would be a Eid gift by the democratic government to the targeted population of 3.4 million poorest of the poor households throughout the country.
The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister here at the Prime Minister House Thursday afternoon.
The Prime Minister also accorded approval for the funds amounting to Rs. 34 billion which have been earmarked for the programme and will gradually be enhanced in future.
The meeting also approved the appointment of Managing Director, who will also be the principle accounting officer for the programme. Besides the meeting constituted an Executive Board comprising Minister for IT Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Finance Naveed Qamar, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Salman Faruqui, Special Assistant to PM on Economic Affairs Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Special Assistant to PM on Social Sector Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali and Qaisar Bengali.
The Prime Minister while appreciating the roadmap of the scheme said that this would auger well for the poor people who are under heavy pressure due to price inflation.
He expressed confidence that this scheme would go a long way in benefiting the poor segment of society and the role of post office and NADRA is very important to provide such facilities to the people at their doorstep.
Qamar Zaman Kaira while briefing the Prime Minister about the salient features of Benazir Income Support Fund said that utmost care is taken to make the programme transparent in every respect.
The Prime Minister was further informed that the scheme would be launched under the name of “Benazir Income Support Programme” and these cards would be issued only to the poorest of the poor families and each household will get Rs. 1000 per month through the facility of the post office.
Kaira further apprised the Prime Minister that all the arrangement and logistic work has been completed and this scheme is ready to be launched before Eid.

Or maybe we do not support Dictators but just lack faith in the current government. Maybe it has to do something with the President.
Or, that for the first time American troops entered Pakistan as soon as that certain someone was sworn in as President.
And going by the past history of our President, not many would be surprised if this scheme is actually a pension fund for the PPP elite. :Evil

Thats a laugh. You don't have faith in any democratic govt. After all how many days have they been in office for you to form conclusions.
Americans entered Pakistan because they knew that their Agent No 1 i.e Mush is no more. And look at the response that Pakistan has given. Mush supporters should be ashamed of themselves. For the first time since the tyrant (read Mush) took over, we have strongly put our case forward.
And between when have you started prognosticating. You surely know of things, which the courts and the intelligence agencies and torture couldn't find out. At least this govt has done many things for the poor in the short period that it has been in Govt. Unlike your not so beneficial savior :mush who all could do was to bomb and threaten his own people.

Erm, I do not support Musharraf and I am against army getting involved in politics in any form.
Secondly, the PPP has done nothing in the past which would make us put our faith in them. We will have to wait and see how this scheme pans out. Until then my verdict is 'PPP Pension Fund'
However, I would love to be proven wrong, because it would mean that this scheme is for the people and will help the common man.
Mush bombed his own people, and so is the PPP gov't. The army has not given up its fight against the tribal people.

This isn't the first of its kind. These schemes always benefit those in power...hardly any money will actually reach the poor most it will be taken by those who are distributing it...Zeenix you need to wake up yaar.
I remember when the floods came before Mush took over. I know the people who were suppose to distribute millions to the poor but the poor people hardly got anything.

Do you realize how feeble your argument is. I mean just because you think that this money isn't going to reach the poor, you are going to criticize. Yes you can criticize once the scheme fails to deliver, but hoping for its failure even before its started, this is one thing i can never do. Yes "dictate-shippers" probably can do it.

You like to hate on the army but without the army you know how bad things would have been during the earthquake...I did have family there...my brother in law who is doc with many of his friends were the first ones to leave from ISB...just hours after the quake. Went into areas the army couldn't even access my road for 10 plus days.
I know the role the army played there and I know the role avg Pakistani played but yet it was shameful...how all the shops raised prices of blankets and goods that victims needed. It wasn't just one person...thousands made money while people suffered...thats also the avg Pakistani for you.
Now lets not even talk about the crooks who were suppose to hand out the money.

Re: the earthquake, majid, i don't think there is anything to be ashamed of. Rather it was one of those occasions in our brief history that we can be truly proud of, notwithstanding the magnitude of the calamity and the suffering of the people, the way that Pakistani nation rose in response is a golden chapter in our chequered history. From Karachi to Khyber the nation united against the calamity. The Regional, religious and ethnic differences were erased and the whole nation stood together. As can be checked from my posts in the earthquake thread, i was an active member in the Relief Unit setup by the provincial govt. I am an eyewitness to many of such glorious acts of sacrifices made by the people to help their brethren. Even the selfless sacrifices and contribution of the Pakistani nation was applauded by many world capitals.
Hence i hope you to be a little less cynical of the Pakistan nation. When challenged they can rise together. And as for the role of the Army, less said the better.
