Lashing out at Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said the senior batsman should have spared a thought for the team's image before going to India and giving vent to his disgruntlement there.

Malik said he still respected Yousuf as a senior player but felt it was wrong on his part to hold a press conference in India and make accusations against him.

"I don't know why he is saying this. But it would have been better if he had come to me as a senior player, friend or brother and told me about his feelings," Malik said while appearing on a show on 'Dunya' channel.

"This would have been better instead of him going to India and saying all these things in a press conference there.

"I still respect him as a senior player and as a friend and I feel he still could have given a lot to Pakistan team and we needed his services. Yousuf should have thought about Pakistan cricket," he added.

Yousuf, who joined the rebel Indian Cricket League last month, has repeatedly claimed that he was forced to do this because Malik didn't give him the required respect as a senior player. He also said Malik was not as good a captain as India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Referring to Yousuf's comparing him with Dhoni, Malik said as a captain he has always tried to give his best.

"I only know as captain I have given my best and try to lead by example. I don't shy away from challenges whether it is batting in a crisis or bowling in power play. What more can I do as captain."

The all-rounder made it clear that neither he got an offer from the ICL nor would he have considered such an offer. "I frankly don't have the time for such leagues and for me the priority is my country." Meanwhile, former Test pacer and assistant coach of the Pakistan team, Aaqib Javed also lashed out at the ICL and players who had joined it.

He said people should first realise what level of competition there was in the ICL and then voice their demand of recalling the players who performed well in the league to the national team.

"It is just like club cricket. I don't understand how people can say these players should be picked on those basis given the competitors they are batting or bowling against. As it is the ICL is not recognised by the ICC, PCB or the Indian board so these players can't be selected." Aaqib said the players should have given first priority to Pakistan before deciding to join the ICL.

"Till the last moment Yousuf was with me at the academy training and he didn't tell me anything," he added.

Like i said, Yousaf has done himself more harm then good and has deserves no sympathy whatsoever for his actions. More than his actions, the way he has been publicly maligning Malik is disgraceful. I am surprised by the restraint shown by Malik.

Hmm....I have been happy to bash yousuf throughout this sorry saga....but then I had a thought. Sportsmen are not always the most rational people going around...some of them are vain, incredibly insecure...despite the tough persona they have on the ground....need look no further than akhtar.
While it might be too late for yousuf....but souldnt there be people around these players keeping them firmly grounded...or at least managing their egos?
What will we when..lets say Nasir Jamshed, or Sohail Khan become superstars in the future? will they accept a junior captain? perhaps not.....partly the culture is to blame...but a big responsibility rests with the board to groom these players..to handle their egos.
Although yousuf is a disgrace, we should wonder how this could have been handled better? We might not have lost him.

Malik as captain maybe should have stayed quiet too???

Malik just playing DUMB.. not good enough

However MoYo said this stuff is beside the point.. Malik is just using the India/Pak divide to his advantage.

also for Malik the main challenges are batting when teams does bad, and bowling during powerplays???
WOW thats a REAL challenge mate... like i said MALIK is too young and unexperienced as captain..

WHY would he tell Malik or Rashid he is going to ICL? so they can RUN to the media and abuse MoYo??

comon kids.. stop bickering and play some DAMN cricket!!!

Yousuf Walked away from the team. Was critisized for leaving team. So Yousuf told the press how it is. Nothign wrong with that.

He may have been to harsh, but it has to be said. The PCB are beyond a joke, though new guys are in, they will need to do ALOT to turn things around. As for the Captain, no way should he have been captain, as a player, he is good, but as a captain, he does not seem to fit the category, especially at a time when Pakistan needs team unity and brotherhood, Shoaib does not seem to be such a captain.

Mythsmoke, im pretty sure Yousuf could not care less who is captain, but fact of the matter is, the captainy still plays a huge role in the team. Young palyers will struggle to get unity in the team, top of that Yousuf said Seniors in the team were often left out. The Seniors in the team are as good as captains, if their going to be treated like newbies, don't expect the team to gel well.

Whatever has happened, has happened.

Facts remain are, there are a few players in the ICL who can get into the Pakistan team hands down. The PCB needs to unban these guys, and review the team and etam captaincy.

I cannot think of a single ICL Pak player who can walk in to all three formats of the game. No amount of performances in the ICL will confirm any class. Unfortunately for Yousuf, people have moved on.....his rants are yesterday's news.

Yousuf tried to make Malik the scapegoat instead of blaming it on the real reason he left.

A "Captain" presiding over the worst period in his team's history talking about "tarnishing team image"? He'd do well to keep quiet.

Really? I thought the 'worst' period was when inzi led us to series defeat in england and capped it with the defeat against ireland...
or at the start of his captaincy when we lost to india at home (super fantabulous miandad was coach) and then went on to lose to australia...
or when javed burki led us 0-4 against england in england....
can think of quiet a few 'worst periods'...not sure if this is up there
