LAHORE: The International Cricket Council (ICC) hoped that Pakistan will provide its match officials the same level of security as to anyone else involved in the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka.

An ICC spokesman on Tuesday told media from its headquarters in Dubai that safety and security was not only a matter for the players. “From the ICC’s perspective, what would be required is that the match officials are afforded the same level of security as any or everyone else involved in the series and the ICC would expect that to be the case in the forthcoming series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka”.

“The issue is that safety and security is not simply a matter for players, it’s also a matter for everyone else-broadcasters, journalists and match officials too, as well as spectators,” the spokesman added.

The impression that the ICC would not sanction the Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan if its match officials were not safe emerged after ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat told a news conference in Mohali on Monday that there was need for further security assessments by the ICC ahead of the tour.

“Security assessment is an ongoing process as we move towards the ICC Champions Trophy (to be held in one city from September 24 to October 5). We would have done that during the Pakistan - India tour had taken place,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said like the players, its officials also had the right to refuse to tour a country. “Just like with players, officials have choices about whether or not they wish to attend a tour and are also likely to be guided by the views of their own governments.

“The ICC would hope that would not be the case and if the right conditions are in place, then it should not be a serious issue.
