View Full Version : Australia vs South Africa | 3rd Test - Day 1 | SCG | 1/3/08

Can South Africa make it a clean sweep of South Africa?

A team beating the world champions 3-0 in their own backyard, whitewashing them will create some serious pandemonium on the world cricket stage because everyone will believe that the mighty Australia can be beaten. It would be great for international cricket but I'm not so sure Australia are going to cave in so easily.

The bowling attack looks distinctly mediocre, but you never know, Bollinger on debut could cause a few problems.

Game starts in about an hour.

Not sure if he is delaying the inevitable or not and from an Aussie perspective what would be the best time for him to retire.

Have a feeling that with Sidebottom and/or Anderson in the side if he does make to the Ashes his average will tumble below 50 (if it hasn't already by then).

Ian Chappel makes a good point, its a shame its taken for Australia to come back to the pack for other teams to be competitive rather than other sides raising their games. England in 2005 and India in 2001 were the only series were teams raised their performance, leading to two fantastic series. This is series along with the series in India haven't been in the same class unfortunately, its more about Australia's decline than South Africa's/India's incline IMO. Shaun Pollock have always been a very dear favorite player of mine. His bowling average of 23.11 is phenomenal. However, what I didn't look up over StatsGuru till now is his performance by periods.

Man, till the end of 2003 he was averaging 20.83 having played 78 Test matches :O . That's simply unbelievable. That's the best Test bowling average in history. It was just his later couple of years where his wickets started to cost him a little more for which his average went up by 23.11

Add to that he also average above 30 with the bat. Truly a magnificent all rounder of the highest quality.

McDonald gone to Ntini 5/162

This is a disaster

Not yet. Butr one more wicket and Aussies could be bowled out on a day 1 flatbed.

Well McDonald hung around but he is not a Test quality number 6.

Ntini figured him out pretty quickly.

If Australia's tail for the first time this series don't fire, this test could become an non event.

Some ginger guy is out.

Who is he?

By what I saw today i wouldn't bother remembering his name. Don't think we'll be seeing much of him.

Let's see what he can do with the ball first before we judge too soon.

Our replacement all rounder (Andrew McDonald) who is playing in place of our replacement all rounder (Watson) who would have been playing in place of our usual all rounder (Symonds).

If thats the best Aus can do - than they need to be worried.

Steyn finding really nice pace here and line here. No swing though.

Yep. Although does depend how he bowls.

But considering the first choice all rounder never deserved selection anyway, neither did the second choice all rounder, it is hardly surprising that the third choice all rounder is not a Test quality batsman from ball 1.

A few blokes with 10,000 odd domestic runs and averages around 50 who can be rightfully annoyed at this turn of events in selection.

It has been 31 years since Australia lost Melbourne and Sydney Tests in the same summer.

Is this his debut?

Also, what became of that player that Aus selected in an ODI a couple years back from the crowd? Any more caps?

Nothing finished yet. Aussies still on track for 350 plus with their good tail to come.

Yes is his debut.

Luke Pomersbach from WA is having a good season this year, lost a bit of form after the "picked from the crowd" game but is coming good.

May see him in the ODI's depending - if we go as bad in the ODI's as we are at Test cricket you will definitely see him.

They found one all rounder and put him in the boiling water. Morkel knocked him cold with a mean bouncer. Poor guy was not strapping his helmet to his head. A forgettable debut so far.

Anything under 350 I'll be happy with. But under 300 will be excellent with the batting form of the saffers.

Useful recovery from 5/150 or whatever. But still the Saffers day (again).

Amjid Javed

So another poor day for Aussies again. Hayden should be retired after this match. Also once again Australias loses top 5 wickets for just over 150 again and the tail has to wag to keep them in with a chance of a big total.

Clarke has been Australias most consistant batsmen the rest have been pants.

S.A bowled well as unit and deserve to be on top after day 1.

Australia's reign is definately over. They couldnt even lift themselves in a dead rubber. The South Africans are all over them. The Aussie's have not once looked like they ever believed they could have won at any stage in this series. The fact that they have chosen to defend most of the time on the field and the fact they made such defensive selectorial decisions clearly shows that their poor performances have really gotten to them.
