The excitement in Aaqib’s voice is unmistakable as he says "I spent the whole day thinking to myself that we might have something really special here"

The former head coach of Pakistan’s national academy, Aaqib Javed, knows talent when he sees it. Aaqib is talking about a 7’2 left arm fast bowler sent to him by Nadeem Iqbal (Waqar Younis’ old fast bowling partner) the assistant coach of the Multan regional academy. The young 21 year old has never played a professional game of cricket but still manages to impress Aaqib.

"At the moment he has no clue about what he's trying to do" continues Aaqib but the seemingly scathing remarks are anything but negative as Aaqib explains when he says "we can teach him that stuff at the academy and if he's good enough then he'll pick it up."

Aaqib clearly doesnt want to waste any more time, he states that he advised Irfan to "pack his bags and come straight back because I want to work on his mental and physical fitness, he hasnt played any real cricket yet so he still has everything to learn."

According to Aaqib, Irfan gets extra bounce due to his height and as a left hander he also gets natural away swing from the right handed batsman. The only thing concerning Aaqib is that Irfan is only clocking 125 kph in the speed department but Aaqib is even upbeat about that saying "What he needs right now is to bring his fitness levels up and start bowling as fast as he can. If he manages to hit 135k+ then we have something special here."

Irfan got his chance to meet with Pakistan's assistant coach Aaqib Javed through what appears to be the first instance of cyber patronage. Nadeem Iqbal first brought Irfan to the attention of the Pakistani cricket fansite PakPassion.Net over a year ago during an exclusive interview with the website.

Then when PakPassion.Net got the chance to interview Aaqib Javed they pushed forward the case of Mohammad Irfan and convinced Aaqib to take a look at him. Aaqib agreed and now Irfan is living the dream and getting coached to play first class cricket at Pakistan's NCA in Lahore, one of the best cricket academies in the world.

The nation that brought the cricketing world the wizardry of Wasim, the destructivesness of Waqar, the guile of Imran, the genius of Fazal and the pure speed of Akhtar may just have uncovered the tallest cricketer in the game's history!

A 7'2 fast bowler steaming in raining down reverse swinging yorkers and peppering batsmen with vicious bouncers could be the best thing to happen to the game of crcket in a long time!

Great work guys, PP has come a long way from the old days :) and the credit goes to Saj and his team. If this guys plays for Paksitan it would truely amazing hopefully we can continue to promote the unknowns in Pak cricket.

he should be releasing the ball from from 8.5 to 9 feet depending on his bowling action
Hope he turns out to be a thinking cricketer

If he ever makes it to the national team, he would become everyone's favorite bowler right away :))) ...

This is great stuff though, if he pans out as a viable talent I am sure Aaqib might really value PP's opinion on unknown talents.

I know this is a bit premature but I have to say this... Mubarak to PP and Merc, well done. Hopefully everything will go well for Irfan inshallah and may he long be known as the gentle giant uncovered by PP.

I hope i am wrong but my initial impressions are not too great. My biggest worry is Irfan not being serious about cricket and eventually giving up for a job instead.

I hope i am wrong but my initial impressions are not too great. My biggest worry is Irfan not being serious about cricket and eventually giving up for a job instead. You do realize until now only nadeem valued the guy and no one else. Sadly not all of us can afford the luxary of sitting front of the PC. The man I believe was working a full time job to support his family...if anything you should see what has been effecting Rauf...these guys have lives beyond cricketed and they effect them in many ways.

Perhaps knowing that he is now actually being looked at...might give hope...might inpsire him to become good hopefully great. Lets stay postive and lets hope Irfan does put in the hard work.

He's SIX inches taller then Joel Garner was, who I'm sure was the tallest cricketer ever. Thats just mind boggling.

His seriousness will come once his domestic commitments can be met (Several PPers are willing to even donate on a monthly basis provided he shows the commitment) and he realizes what a big chance it actually is for him!

What do we really have to lose even if your worst fears do materialize and if they don't, we would have a world beater at our hands!

Being pessimistic in life will never get you anywhere...

Merc, your article is great but it does not mention the fact that he was carrying an injury (Nadeem already mentioned that) while he met Aaqib and hence the slow speeds!

You did mention how Aaqib wanted him to improve his fitness levels but...

Nice write up. This will be a great story if he makes to the national side.

But why "gentle" giant? I hope he is nasty.

"I spent the whole day thinking to myself that we might have something really special here," Aaqib told PakPassion.com. "At the moment he has no clue about what he's trying to do, but we can teach him that stuff at the [Pakistan] academy."

Some one needs to tell them that its pakpassion.net and not pakpassion.com
