MCGRATH INJURED IN WARM-UP
GLENN McGrath could be out of the second Ashes Test after injuring himself during the pre-match warm-up.

The veteran paceman had to be carried off the Edgbaston pitch this morning after hurting his right ankle.

McGrath took nine wickets in the first Test at Lords and it will be a blow to Australian captain Ricky Ponting if his unable to include the 35-year-old in his side to face England

Amjid Javed
4th August 2005, 08:54
huge blow for australia. may kaspowicz will play instead.

chance for england?

News filters through that McGrath has been injured in a pre-match warm-up. He fell to the floor after standing on a stray cricket ball and was immediately surrounded by concerned team-mates, leaving the field some minutes later on a motorised buggy to be assessed by medical staff. :(

Quote from Cricinfo on Dropping chance :

End of a good over from Gillespie, and if only Warne had been as
quick with his hands as he is with a mobile phone, England may
have been one wicket down! Rare lapse from a quality slip fielder

England off 2 a great start 36/0

australias bowlers not up tp mark thus far.....

mulan
4th August 2005, 10:14
Aussie bowlers pitching it up too much though....No swing at all, and just giving Tresco and Strauss ample opportunity to drive...

There's nothing off the pitch either....hard work for the bowlers then.

cricinfo :

10.4 Kasprowicz to Strauss, FOUR, short and wide, the friendly ghost
just got friendlier! Take that says Strauss cracking a square-cut
to the point fence!
10.4 Kasprowicz to Strauss, (noball) no run, fuller and on the off,
slanted to gully, and that's another no-ball from Kasper the
friendly ghost

mulan
4th August 2005, 10:30
Somehow this Aussie bowling line up looks a little toothless without Pidgeon...

Like the commentators just said...Perhaps Tresco and Strauss said I silent prayer of relief when they heard he's not playing...

Asim2Good
4th August 2005, 10:31
Warne on attack now

mulan

Asim2Good
4th August 2005, 10:32

z10
4th August 2005, 10:34
well atleast hes finally prepared to use his feet

tho im afraid england may go over to the other extreme, instead of blocking warne they're gna try and smash him

both suit warne just fine

mulan
4th August 2005, 10:40
Okay...I just got up for some coffee and the ball has been changed...what happened?

Are there any damp areas where the ball could have gotten wet...considering all the fours that's been hit?

Or was it hit out of shape?

And did Pidgeon really turn over his ankle stepping on a cricket ball while chasing after a rugby ball? (I should have gotten up earlier...)

lol in the uk it aint that bad... we get a add break
after every few overs or somthing....

mulan
4th August 2005, 10:49
Okay....some help please...

Ponting just posted Katich in a position I'm not familiar with...almost right next to the other batsman...on the on side....for Kaspo's bowling...

What is that position called? The comms say deep silly mid off...that's just plain silly...

It seems dangerous...Kaspo's bowling well...

Better over from Warne...maiden....bowled 2 top spinners I think...A slider first ball...

England have to bat well...I get this funny feeling that a lot's gonna depend on the openers...

Good ball but that dismissal was more abysmal shot selection than a great bit of bowling

mulan
4th August 2005, 11:28
That ball spun back a mile!!!! Why on earth did Strauss play that shot???!!!

Didn't he pick the leggie??!! Or did it get to him quicker than he expected....He should have known better...Warne isn't tweaking it that much...but he is putting some pace on it....

Some fun now...

Amjid Javed
4th August 2005, 12:35
tresco nearing a hundred here... at this rate england will have 400 by close of play.
wicket looks very slow and flat and with all dampness around it should hold together for 5 days... only worry is uneven bounce from indentations made today may play apart if pitch drys out.

with old traffod test coming straight afta this one mcgrath may miss both tests and england cud have gr8 chance winning both!

That track is getting flatter by the minute....

England will kick themselves if they don't get to 480 at least....Aussies will make them pay...

do u guys think the pitch is way to "easy runs". The runs are comming as through this is a odi last 10 overs!!! If the pitch remains the same i expect aus to pile up 400+ runs easily. This game may end in a draw.

Brett Lee:

And we guys' go ballistic when Akhtar goes for runs. :)))
Although i must say Lee was unlucky, Flintoff played a few dodgy hook-pull shots that he could have easily top-edged!

Australia should just bat and bat...! england scored 400 on first day, normally such a score would take day and a half so the games very advanced this stage after 1.5 days...!

normally looking at scorecards you would think its lunch day 3...! games is about 2/3 sessions in advance.

5th August 2005, 15:58
Our bowlers are pretty decent now, certainly the best lineup England have had in an age, but they could be better if they just worked a few flaws out of their game. Harmison can sometimes get stuck on bowling short and Hoggard and Jones usually send down too many bad balls to build up pressure in all of their spells. Fred's good but we need to be careful with him and his injuries.

I hope that the forthcoming series in the sub-continent will improve their accuracy and discipline but of the four only Simon Jones can reverse it so it may take them a short while to get used to bowling on dead pitches.

Billy...do you think Hoggie tried just a little too hard this morning?

There was no swing and yet he kept on pitching it up....Let the Oz off the hook with quite a few no-balls as well...

He was excellent in that Wanderers test against SA...do you think he should have done the yeoman thing instead of trying for something that obviously wasn't there...

Or could it have been the game plan going into the morning?

I don't know to be honest. He hasn't been bowling well for most of this summer and he's been having problems with no balls.

Of all the England bowlers I'd say he's easiest to target as he's so hard on himself and sets such high standards that when it's not working for him he tries too hard and looses his lines.

350+ is about right, although 300 would probably be enough.

I'm not sure England need to play Warne as such, they just need to survive him and keep the score ticking over by whacking Lee and Gillespie to the boundry.

That's presuming they continue to bowl badly mind..

As far as I am aware Warne is still only allowed to bowl from one end!

Their 'pace' attack are going to get walloped around the park from the other end, there's no doubt Warne is a class act, if England play him with the care and respect he deserves, there is no reason why we shouldn't be 350 plus in front after our 2nd innings.

GOOD TO SEE EVERYONE IN ENGLAND ARE BEHIND THE NATIONAL TEAM.

Billy
6th August 2005, 09:02
I'm very nervous now.. but what Foo Fighter said is true. Warne can only bowl from one end and Australia's fast bowlers didn't seem to be bowling well at all last night. Dizzy looked slow and tired whilst Lee sent down a few scatter gun efforts! It should still be a close match though.

Imagine how entertaining the series it would be if England win the back to back tests and are 2-1 up going into the fourth test to face a newly returned and fired up McGrath. I bet it'd make great cricket..

MIG
6th August 2005, 09:37
Well Foo Fighter - I now revise my predictions and hand over victory to England. Long Live the Queen and that Charles Chap !

However, with a class act as Australia, I wouldnt discount a final run chase to win the match - but lets see what transpires today shall we ?
