Police in the Indian capital, Delhi, say six men have been arrested on charges of raping a 16-year-old girl in the early hours of Thursday.

Officers said the teenager was lured into a bus in the Najafgarh area.

The high rates of rape have raised great concern among the citizens of Delhi, with some now demanding the death penalty be imposed.

This is the third case of a gang rape in a vehicle in the capital in the past few months.

Police say an acquaintance of the 16-year-old lured her into the bus to be raped by him and five others.

She had been missing from home since Wednesday, said police, who had responded to an anonymous call.

The accused appeared in court on Thursday and were remanded in police custody for two days.

Lengthy process

In other recent incidents in Delhi, a university student was abducted by four men and assaulted in May while another woman was gang raped last month.

Junior Home Minister S Reghupathy has said in parliament that more than 550 cases of rape were registered in the capital last year.

He said most were committed by people known to the victim.

Women's groups say India's poor rate of conviction and lengthy trial process deter many rape victims from coming forward to testify, especially because they fear social discrimination.

In 2003, a Swiss diplomat was raped in her car after attending a film festival.

On the same night, an Indian woman filmmaker suffered head injuries as she fought off attackers.

Those attacks came soon after the alleged rape of a woman by members of the presidential bodyguard.

If this had happened in Pakistan the western media would be banging on about it as if their life depended on it.

I have a theory on why gang rapes have become so prevelant worldwide, but alarmingly so in Pak and India.

The Internet and the ease with which so much hardcore material is available.

Lets face it-99% of our populations lead repressed lives (when you take out the BollyLollwood industry). For 15 rupees you can watched whatever you want in the thriving net cafes...man, you can take your girlfriend to a netcafe and...................

The problem is that most of the females featured in this material are forced into doing it or sold into the industry or illegal immigrants that cannot say NO...basically they are exploited and the worst thing imaginable are done to them.

The result is that 'us' simple Asian folk are now seeing things we never saw...and expecting the acts that occur to be the 'norm'.

I have said many many times that the youngsters who have 24/7 access to this stuff back home are going to be so mentally corrupted, by the time they get married, their expectations from their wives will be SO high, that it will have major social implications for our society.

i agree with u competely there, Oxy bhai

whereas the west took its own time to come to terms with all of this

we in the subcontinent are trying to catch up so fast that we are forgetting ourselves in the process

but the sad thing is that this will lead to alarming levels of tension between the shareef generation and the web - influenced present generation (of which i am ashamed ot be a member of )

The West has its problems, but because they dont have a concept of haram/halal, the issue of porn is NOT an issue...we grow up in the west; we are used to flesh on display everywhere; adverts; magazines; TV; films; in summer when everyone strips off etc etc.

Wher you live in a society where this doesnt happen...but the moment you are in the privacy of your own room/netcafe, then you can access EVERYTHING...and it is a major shock to the system. The reaction ,psychologically, sadly is a negative one.

The Pakistani Internet Cafe scandal was caused as a result of netcafes playing pure hardcore material into the cabins; young and old couples watched (in private so they thought)...and then when sufficiently turned on went about their business...whilst the whole thing was filmed.

Now if you are 'unfortunate' enough NOT to have a girlfriend...what do you do? You see the action...now you WANT some action.....and thats when thes rapes occur.

This is an irreversible process in my opinion...the damage is done.

The pessimism is because you dont have to be a bad person/dishonourable man to get caught up in this.

Porn is addictive...however shareef you are. And with porn, you then need an outlet because it plays on frustrations.

I am so glad I got married before the internet took over
