KARACHI: Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, coach Bob Woolmer and manager Haroon Rasheed have been accused of deliberately not playing Younis Khan in the VB one-day series by former Test players Illyas Ahmed and Sikander Bakht.
Appearing on the discussion programme on Pakistan Television during the break in the Pakistan and West Indies VB encounter on Friday, Sikander started the ball rolling by suggesting to Illyas if he didn’t feel that Younis’s non-selection might have something to do with Imran Khan tipping him as a future captain.
"What would you say," Bakht told Illyas who took up the issue by blatantly stating that there was a possibility that the team management was not playing Younis in the VB series because they might not want a situation where he scores more runs and becomes a strong candidate to replace Inzamam as captain.
"It is a possibility. I am just saying this is a possibility," Illyas maintained after making his allegations. Younis who was Pakistan’s leading run scorer in the three test series has not been played in any VB series match so far. Former captain Imran Khan had said recently while criticizing Inzamam’s captaincy that Younis Khan should be appointed the captain.
Inzamam’s captaincy again came in for criticism from the commentators with former Australian skipper Ian Chappell describing him as a ‘conservative’ captain when there was a need for a more ‘pro-active’ captain in the Pakistan team.
