High spines are created through a convex plane and a pneumatic drum sander. A machine isn't needed to make that particular shape, the only shape on the market which really needs a machine is the Slazenger V3.

Handmade can mean anything from them putting the handle in and sanding it or to shaping the complete bat.

Handmade is nice if you're visiting the factory and want to fiddle with weights and profiles. But pressing is the most important thing.

Guys out of these 2 bats which one do you suggest?

Sammi24
5th August 2010, 15:28
The first one is 2.6 with 11 grains and second one is 2.8 14 grains

xkalibur80
5th August 2010, 16:20
I will go with the second one due to it's weight....I don't care about grains too much as more grains will reduce the life of the bat.

I haven't held an EVO yet, but they look exact same as the Fusion design.
It looks like a nice piece of willow. straight grains. all sapwood. Is the grip a scale?
Once you knock it in good, (it looks like its pre-prepared make sure you give it more knocking) its going to be power packed. More and more, Ive seen those top end GN's with only 5/6 grains they are the most powerful bats I have used.
THANKS for ur kind comments. The grip is new pyramid type, bat is pre-prepared and the edges were nice and rounded of by GN. I knocked in the face more for abt 15-20 mins with a mallet.
Today I used the bat in practice against old cricket balls and ur right it is a powerful bat. Ping is very good and when the ball hits the toe it still rebounds nicely. It has best pressed toe out of all english bats I've used.
I agree with most things you have said about GN bats in ur last few posts.

MB gloves looks good but it wold have been awesome if Pakistani brands used genuine pittard

By the way, aren't you missing few bats and a pair of gloves from this shipment? Such as CA 12K gloves, MB LE etc

Also mind telling how good or better is CA TRD compare to CA 12000 Plus?

Ive got a question regarding oiling the bat guys.

Normally i would just give my bat to the local cricket shop for that kinda stuff.

but i dont live there any more.

So how does the oiling work? should i coat back and front once? or twice?

best regards.

Cover Drive
9th August 2010, 10:46
It depends how dry your bat is. Everyone has different method of oiling. Some people oil the front, sides and back to getter whereas some (like me) oils back and sides together and front seperately. Again post pictures of the bat then one will have a better idea regarding number of coats which are required.

askmoi

best would be to check with the manufacturer....they will give you the best possible answer reg oiling .....

i know the pictures arent great but didnt have much time :D

Knightrider
9th August 2010, 20:15
I would only knock in toe and edges and make the edges round with a mallet. I would also recommend you to fit clear GN exta tec sheet on the bat face. After that you only need to play the bat in against some throw downs.

Sammi24
9th August 2010, 20:19
Majid bhai,

ive only got the Ball malet not the other one :( will that work as well?

There was a clear sheet with the bat, can i use that? or should i buy GN sheet instead?

I am more concern about oilin if i should knock the areas and then oil? or the other way around.

best regards
Sammi

Knightrider
9th August 2010, 20:25
Yh use the one provided with the bat no need to buy new sheet. These bats are super grade bats and are almost fully ready to play. Oil it lightly then round off the edges and knock in toe with the ball mallet. Ball mallet should be fine because these bats are already pre knocked and only require light knocking in.

Sammi24
9th August 2010, 20:35
Thanks majid bhai il just oil the edges tonight.

and start knocking the edges/ toe tomorrow :D

i just cant wait to use the beast :D

it pings soooo nice its amazing :D

edges are huge for the weight of the bat :D

Uzi_Sports
9th August 2010, 20:40
None of the CA bats are pre knocked as there are no facilities available in any factories in Pakistan to pre knock the bat.
I would definitely use better quality Plain Prot sheet as the sheet provided with the bat is not a very good quality.

Regards

Asad

Sammi24
9th August 2010, 20:44
But there is no use in giving it a coat of oil beside edges?

Knightrider
9th August 2010, 20:47
No worries. Lightly oil the face of the bat and edges. And avoid using the bat on artificial concrete hard pitches or against poor/cheap quality balls and save the bat for proper matches.

Sammi24
9th August 2010, 20:55
Just gave light coating :D tomorrow il start knockin it in.

thanks for the help majid bhai + asad bhai :D

bigfan
10th August 2010, 01:25
When oiling the bat for the first time, I recommend using a liberal amount (cap full) on a cloth on the face then laying the bat horizontal for 24hrs on its back so the oil soaks in from the face, then do the back and lay horizontal for 24hrs. edges just do them at the same time as face or back.

Make sure you spend plenty of time knocking the edges and toe, start soft for 4 hrs or so then after 8hrs you can hit quite hard (not hardest you can). When you test it in the nets use an old ball you should be able to feel where its not knocked in, knock those areas again at home then test out.

see how there is a light color to the willow just to the right of the grain can anyone tell me what that means? Ive seen it on a couple of G1 clefts lately but others are a consistent white across the whole cleft.

askmoi
10th August 2010, 06:16
it is just a fleck....it doesnt have any bearing on the performance....more and more batmakers these days are grading their clefts on performance rather than cosmetics

Cover Drive
10th August 2010, 08:34
Sammi, I personally oil the way bigfan explained above. I would give the bat more time so it can dry completely and oil can soak in properly. Perhaps 72 hours would be ideal before knocking a bat.

By the way, if I am correct this bat seems to be laminated, right?

Sammi24
10th August 2010, 09:34
its not laminted.

Or Armie didnt tell me atleast.

Cover Drive
10th August 2010, 10:07
To me it look like it's laminated as I think that's a joint on the edges.

bigfan
10th August 2010, 10:36
Looks laminated from the side on. doesn't look like a grain on the edge there.

Sammi24
10th August 2010, 10:52
If its Laminated then its very sad.

Because i was not told about this.

Cover Drive
10th August 2010, 11:17
LOL why is it sad? Intact, I would say it's good thing in my opinion. Since you really care about bats responsiveness then in a sense you are better off as it will rebound slightly better than normal bats.

Cover Drive
10th August 2010, 11:19
Just gave light coating :D tomorrow il start knockin it in.

thanks for the help majid bhai + asad bhai :D

I would say give some more time before you start knocking.

So how did you oil your bat?

Sammi24
10th August 2010, 11:25
CD the fact why its sad is atleast i should have been told..

I gave the back and edges a light coating.

il proberly give front the coating tonight.

also i was told i can give the back and front oil at the same time.

question is should i repeat 1-2 more?

Armie
10th August 2010, 11:42
Sammi every bat is different. Some need very little oiling while others need a lot. I generally would do 2-3 coats but there was one particular Sher that i had to oil 6 times. The bat gives you a good idea itself once you oil it. Leave it for a couple of days and see how dry the willow is. generally 2-3 coats should be enough.

Cover Drive
10th August 2010, 14:36
I would say apply two coats as you don't want the bat to be overoiled. It's better to underoil the bat rather than overoiling it. If I were you I would increase the time gap between each interval. I know you want to get your hands on the bat as soon as you can but trust me it's worth waiting an you won't regret.

Sammi24
10th August 2010, 17:44
Cd il proberly give it second coat on saturday.

can i knock it abit in the mean time? like edges and toe?

Uzi_Sports
10th August 2010, 18:19
If its Laminated then its very sad.

Because i was not told about this.

Laminated bats are cheaper than TRD bats and also it is not legal to play with laminated bat in most leagues. I didn't know that CA made laminated bats with putting their top bat stickers on the bat.
Check with Armie if this bat is definite laminated.

Regards

Asad

I would say give second coating after 48-72 hours.

I would not suggest you to knock the bat in the meantime.

Knightrider
10th August 2010, 20:51
Its not a laminated bat thats just a blemish/grain on the edge. I had that sort of grain on my bubber sher bat.
http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb312/majid100no/CATRD2.jpg
Laminate joint is straight and this is just a wonky blemish/speck mark

Uzi_Sports
10th August 2010, 21:27
i don't think the bat provided by Armie is laminated. i think it is the prot sheet edges are giving the impression of joint.

They play extremely well. I used mine for a practice session and for a short while in a game and trust me the ball was going like a bullet. Well the one I have (Krakatoa) has really good bottom/toe and is better than Asian bats.

Yes, it is worth every single penny.

Does anyone know if SF are going to release any new softs this year?
Who else makes gloves with pittards leather palms besides SS and SG?

I picked up a Puma Iridium 6000 last week weighed according to the sticker 2lb11 and it picked up better than 2lb7/8. thick piece of willow 30mm edges. grains didn't look to inviting. Is it possible to get 2lb6 bats that aren't toothpics?
hell even a toothpick that had a middle even if its small. I used an old school GM maestro in the nets, toothpick of a bat couldn't have been more than 2lb6 was a pleasure to use. so much time to wield the bat for any stroke.

Cover Drive
13th August 2010, 06:21
I think they have already released 2010 new softs. Although I am not sure if you are asking of 2011.

Mostly every company makes gloves with pittard palm.

Pardon me but what are you referrig to when saying 'toothpick'

bigfan
13th August 2010, 09:10
I bought some softs off SF in 2009 and they still sell the same softs now as they had then (more than 12 months ago).

I like 4 split shark tooth batting gloves, so I would like to find some that have pittards palms.
I like the more splits the better, especially on my left (top) hand have to have full movement to hold the bat.

Like this
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/7936/slazengervikingcricketg.jpghttp://img339.imageshack.us/img339/8523/pumaballistic5000ultras.jpg

By toothpick I mean thin. If you have a toothpick its a very thin splint of wood you use to pick food out from between your teeth.
When I said that I meant that the size of the bat would not matter so long as I could get one that was very light.
I was asking if anyone know of any light bats manufacturers make

Cover Drive
13th August 2010, 09:28
Gary at Redback have good split gloves which have Pittard Palm. Newbery SPS 2 also have pittard palm whereas they are split as well and the list goes on.

One of the batmaker of who I got aware of lately is Black Cat. They make quite impressive light weight bats with very good profile.

CA PLUS 12,000 REVIEW;
After getting CA Plus Extra Power from Armie I was tempted and wanted to get another CA bat as Extra power had impressed me not only with it's quality but with everything. So when I got this bat I was really impressed with it's quality and with the bat specs. The bat weighs 2.9 but with feather light pick up it seems it is 2.7. The pickup have made this bat incredibly light and I hope it doesn't get too light for me. However, the willow seems to be quite moistured whereas the profile and edges are really massive for it's weight. Ping is the best. Overall I am very impressed with this CA as well and would recommend to anyone.

Nope! I am 80% certain that 'double cleft' means laminated. Now it is illegal for international players to use laminated bats as it results a big size bat in small weight. If a match referee sees it then an immediate action could be taken. So I disagree with him. It is kinda hard to hide it as well. Most international player bats don't have edges fully covered which would hide the joint.

There's 1 England player at the moment who I think may have a laminate, but usage is not massively widespread. The laminates that have been used by the likes of Tendulkar are vastly different to the shop ones to and they're made for different reasons.

As far as I understand the blade of a bat has to be made from a single piece of willow. However, if a bat breaks it is permissable to repair the bat with a separate piece of willow. I am sure anyone caught using a laminated bat would claim that they are using a repaired bat.

Not KP.

Quite a few of the shop laminated bats are done so you have a pretty face and can use a lower grade wood on the bat. The pros have them done purely for performance and they're therefore using a different technique to do the lamination.

Got hold of Abdul Razzaq's Boom Boom bat yesterday - he actually gave it to a friend of my brothers (who is a semi-pro) as they were leaving their hotel yesterday

Superb pick up - weighs about 2lb 12 but felt like it was 2lb 4oz

The edges were double the size of a conventional bat!!!! Monster edges!

But the actual construction quality was very very poor - unfinished; jagged, unplaned edges; very rough

I didnt have time to take photos of it as I was trying to get my sons bat autgraphed (which I did successfully!)

JazakALLAH Khair!

To be honest, there is notable difference in this and the Bubber Sher I own. This is miles better than it in terms of everything such as profile, pickup, balance etc.

Actually these are Pittard palm gloves. But it's not genuine pittard, it's like pattern style palm. Hope it made sense.

If you are looking at Pakistani, CA12000 LE should do the trick

As far as English bats are concerned, Newbury will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

Sure, here you go;

Pads; If you look at English then one of the best pads around which are quite light would be Morrant Superlite, which Sachin Tendulkar uses. They are moulded pads but any brand moudled pads would be light in weight and would do the trick for you. However, I find them to be priced a bit high. So an alternate yet good solution would be if you go with CA 10000 Plus pads which Sherry Bhai has. They are same type of pads and are very light.

If not moulded style pads then new Bubber Sher pads are good as they are light in terms of weight and fit nicely.

Apart from them Gray Nicolls Xiphos are good. These are the ones Mohammad Yousuf wears in Test matches.

Last style/type would be GM RSB. These are the ones Majid Bhai has and ones Ravi Bopara wears.

All of the pads mentioned above are light when it comes to weight. However, I would like to ask you one thing that are you going to get pads shipped from another country (Pakistan, England, India etc)? If you are then I must say shipping charges will kill your budget as shipping for a pair of pads is ridiculously high.

Gloves: Again if you look for high end English brand gloves then the ones which are flexible are M&H Distinction. They are top quality gloves and no one will have doubt about that. As far there price goes it would be quite steep.

If you move to Pakistani gloves then it would be Ihsan Inferno 950, Ihsan Inferno 750, CA 12000 Plus (I have pair of each so if you would like to have a look then let me know. The Inferno 750 are brand new so if you want them then we can talk about it).

Bats:

In that price range you can get a Newbery bat. You have probably seen my Newbery bat and I paid 200 GBP for it which is around $300 CAD and this price includes shipping from UK to your doorstep.

There are quite a few Pakistani bats that you can get as well such as AS V10, MB Malik Bubber Sher Limited Edition, CA 12000 Plus and CA 12000 Plus TRD Limited Edition.

Hope it helps! Feel free to ask any question you have got.

I personally wouldn't buy anything from the dealers in Toronto....check out Uzi sports or onlinestockist.com for both softs and bats.

If you are looking for light weight pads, SS makes really good lightweight pads as well as gloves.

Amazing gear, huge improvements. Best Pak soft goods I've ever seen. AS and MB are doing really well. CA make nice gloves but their pads are average compared to AS,BoomBoom & MB. Ihsan softs are also pretty good. I rate AS the best.

But I think AS ones are bit better. If you closely look AS ones have knee roll which Boom Boom ones doesn't have. So I would say AS ones are tad better. AS seems to be first Pakistani brand to be using knee roll in it pads.

Yeah, for me BoomBoom are just a big joke really. The quality of Pakistan's Kits these days is shocking.

How do you think they get BoomBoom embroidered onto an albion helmet?

Thanks for the pics CD.

Is the bag heavy when empty? Does all your gear fit in it easily? I am looking to get another bag for my son (he has a lot of gear for his age). What I have found is with most bags that once you put the helmet you have to juggle the rest of the kit around to make it fit. How do you rate this bag?

By kits if you mean clothing the one players wear but if you mean equipment which includes pads, gloves etc then I would say it's quite better than before. Pakistani equipment is improving day by day and it is getting as good as English.

Uhmm I don't think it is embroidered on the helmet. I guess it's just white sticke which sticks very well.

No worries mate!

No, it is not heavy when it's empty. Even I you fin it heavy then you can use wheels but I dent find it heavy. Uhmm since it is 'double decker' you can put pads and bats inthe bottom level whereas othe stuff which includes helmet can be kept in upper level. I did not face that problem. The other day what I had in my bag was the following; 4 bats, pair of pads in bottom level and strippers and helmet along two gloves in upper level. The pocket where I have strippers you can easily put pads and or bat in it if the one on right is empty.

I am not sure if I was able to explain it properly but if you wish I can put my stuff in and post (or email) some pictures so you can have a better idea of what I am saying.

MashALLAH your son has impressive stuff. If I remember you once said he has M&H stuff so if you can post pictures of them then it would be highly appreciated.

No I mean the outerwear as in Clothing, Caps etc.

Well you cant really tell unless you have the helmet with you, Albion helmets have 'Albion' embroidered on the back so this is the reason I thought the BoomBoom sticker would not do a very good job in sticking over it. :afridi

Cover Drive bhai, a noob question: How are molded pads different from normal ones and what are the advantages and disadvantages of both? Thanks

Moulded pads are light in weight and are made of high quality density foam such as;

http://www.morrant.com/morrant_cricket_batting_pads/morrant_international_ultralite_cricket_batting_le gguards/96524_p.html

Whereas on the other hand if you look at traditional style pads then mostly they have wood canes in them which increases the weight such as;

http://www.morrant.com/newbery_cricket_batting_pads/newbery_gt_335_cricket_batting_legguards/103879_p.html

I would say moulded are better because in them it gets easier to run, however, one of the drawback of them is that they are stiff so sometimes it cause problems. On the other hand traditional pads are heavier and running gets a bit hard. At last the decision narrows down to ones preference.

Hope it helps!

I don't have one nor I have used ones but I will give it a shot with whatever knowledge I have. Since they are stiff and are not very comfortable when batting which includes playing a stroke, bending etc you will have to face slight difficult.

As I said earlier I haven't used them so I really can't say what problem they excatly cause.

Perhaps cricketer13 Bhai and xkalibur80 bhai can answer this question as they have used moudled pads.

Seems like your talking about using my GN evo 5 grain bat and Kook CCX 6/7 grains. But my CCX bat was also really good I could hit bigger sixes with Ccx bat then GN. GN required lot of knockin and playin in but its coming really good now and ur right GN bats do make very nice sound even when the ball hits the toe, it still makes a sweet sound and pings well. I used few shortcuts to knockin the GN Evo quickly and it has worked. Bat has started to play really well. I messed up the shape of the handle by removing the original pyramid grip. The handle doesnt feel as good as before so I've had to fit a half grip for more thicker/comfortable grip for bottom hand. Fitting 1 and half grips has improved the balance.

All that hard earned money by your parents, wasted in buying cricket gear but man !! what a crappy player you are ???
Get into a cricket coaching academy and invest some time in nets and play some real cricket to get the basics right - instead of wasting money in high end cricket gear and hoping that it will make a great batsman.

Last question that any new bat on your mind? :)

Once again JazakALLAH Khair for the pictures!

The Bradbury is a very nice bat. It's 2lb 7oz and has a very nice pickup. It also pings well. I am still kind of knocking it in but so far so good.

I have Bubber Sher stickers but didn't want to put them on as I think it just makes the bat look fake. I think I'll just sand it all down and have it plain. It has a very nice blade though.

The M&H is youths size. Out of all the bats his Harlequin is by far the best. It is an absolute work of art and the sound the ball mkes off the bat is just heavenly. It was a choice between Newbery, Salix and M&H and I am so glad we went with the M&H.

What men's size bat will I be buying next? I already have too many bats, (I also have a Sher Amin still in the wrapper) and I don't play anymore but maybe next time my son plays in Taunton I will see about an M&H Distinction. I just love cricket bats. :)

Nice bats! How is the AM bat?

I have had the bat for 2 years now and have never used it! I am slowly knocking it in but my eldest son will probably use it next season or the season after. Sorry for the 'non answer'.

JazakALLAH Khair for replying :)

I have seen or read much about Bradbury, hence, I was asking you.

Anyways, if you have original Bubber Sher stickers then what's the worry? I mean just clean this and apply those stickers. MB for once had started to make stickered Bubber Shers so give a shot I would say.

Obviously Harlequin is the best among them:). So the pads and gloves are in youth size as well? Also how good would you say these Disrinction pads an gloves are?

Distinction is very good bat and has very good profile as well.

Once again JazakALLAH Khair

The pads are a bit bulky. It's hard to run in them but you can remove the inserts and use them as fielding pads if you wish. That's why my son also has puma iridium 4000 pads.

The gloves are brilliant. Great protection and flexibility along with comfort.

I think good quality plain bats have a certain mysterious charm which is another reason not to put the stickers on.

Oh really?!? :O I always thought Distinction pads fitted nicely but I guess I was slightly wrong. Ah okay Puma Iridium padss ain't bad either. At one stage I was thinking of getting Distinction pads and gloves as well but I guess not anymore if they are bulky.

These gloves are one of the best split gloves in the market.

great collection of bats Aamer bhai. The m&H and Bradbury look especially good. Do tell me more about this M&H? Pickup, middle position, balance?

I was very close to buying one - ended up with a Thruxton SPS (def not complaining). I didnt realize the edge sizes were so small.....im not big on edge sizes though.

The edges on the Harlequin are quite small but the bat is crafted in such a fine way that the real hitting zone is where the majority of the wood is. The pickup is featherlite and the bat is beautifully balanced. The bat has a long middle which is quite high up the blade. It is ideal for playing square cuts and pulls without compromising drives on slow low pitches.

The customer service isn't great at M&H. I found them a little arrogant in my dealings with them but the product really is faultless.

Newbery make beautiful bats also.

WTH ???
Your bat's face is closed even before it gets inline with your front leg pad.

Shut the hell up maan. Thats my younger bro (12) just trying on my kit. Look thru the topic and you will see pictures of my batting/stance.

what do you make of warsop/redback vs M&H?

Also do you think that harlequin would be best suited for pitches with low bounce? I love the bat - just fear i'd never hit the middle depending on the pitches i play. Also, i love lofting over the infield, not sure this is the right bat for that kind of game?

I was pretty certain that it had low sweetspot.

I really don't think thick edges are everything. I mean with thick edges one can see sweetspot is limited and is big in terms of width whereas I believe its vice versa for thinner edge bats.

Seems like you are a GM fan. Top stiff I must say. I have always been fan of Original Tehnik pads. Was very close in buying them but neve got them as they went out of stock.

Just wondering how is your bat performing? Also any significant difference in 09 and 010 model glove except colour scheme?

mate relax! He just got in that pose for a picture to be taken. It was not a test match, it was just for a picture!

Bat performs nicely, shame I haven't really this season. It's beginning to show signs of wear and tear, namely the couple of cracks on the outside edge shoulder and a bit of damage to the inside edge. I plan to send it back to GM at some point for a refurb and get next season's stickers, maybe the new Apex ones.

Only thing that's different on the new gloves is the velcro tab on the wristband, on the 09 gloves they were pointy whereas on the 10 ones they're a bit rounded.

Ah okay. Hopefully you will perform well next season :)

Ahh I hated new GM stickers and didn't like them at all! :(

Thanks for all the info though.

JazakALLAH Khair Majid Bhai.

Personally I didn't like them at all! Sherry Bhai and Majid Bhai's GM have much better looking stickers than these. These sticker look a lot like Impala.

They look alright to me but not good. This years I much better. I don't know why they are finishing Hero. It looks much nicer instead of Luna. This is just my opinion..

I'm glad the Apex has sky blue stickers like the old Catalyst, prefer lighter colours on bats. I hope I can see what next year's softs look like before I go to vks for their end of season sale, otherwise I'll probably try and pick up a pair of the all white stuff from this summer on the cheap.

I wish I was in England and could snap few bargains. Anyways, I will be looking for online websites. Do you know any website which have good sale? Last time I shopped at kitbag and got a pair of pads from there. So far they don't have any sale going gone.

I am hoping that GM comes out with good soft after being disappointed with GN softs. GN in my eyes seems to be in shambles.
