this is wht cric info says
UPDATE (16:15 GMT) - we have some good news for you, it has stopped
raining at The Oval and the covers are off, play should resume in
about 15-20 minutes. 1630 GMT (1730 local time).

I really don't care much about the result, but all I want is for Aus to cross 500 in this innings. I placed a bet of Rs. 10,000 with my younger brother yesterday before Australia started their innings that they will post 500...I don't know why and how, but I just had this feeling it will happen. Only 250-odd more to get. :D

what I would like to know is what exactly are Australia planning on doing now?

I mean we are ambling along at 3 runs per over (2 runs per over since Ponting fell)! What is the point? This is a do or die situation! There are plenty of wickets in hand and plenty of batting to come. Are we playing for a draw or something?

Just get some runs on the bored!

I'd rather we lose 3-1 going for the win than lose the series 2-1 like this!

Very dissapointing from Australia.

Australia take the light

I would have thought they needed all the time they could get but perhaps they don't think they need as much. Dissapointed. Very dissapointed.

Think I will sell my day 5 ticket.

Hussain

bad light stops play
at 277-2

though 5 overs are still left in da days play but i doubt tht light will improve any further
so its the end of day 3

and Aussies are still a 100 runs behind English score
the match is all but drawn for me

Aussies may have to declare in deficit - thats the only way to give Shane Warne a fair crack at the English batsman

My voodoo doll will sort him out;-) and i am doing a rain dance just incase that doesnt work.

Hussain

there is no point in declaring in deficit

as Aussies wud still have to knock off those runs in the 2nd inns

Australia can still win this game. It is quite clear from the way they are batting that they only want to bat once. So with 90 overs (minimum) tomorrow I suspect they will try to bat at least 70 of those overs - maybe even more if play starts early. If they score at 4 an over they get a lead of around 180+. Depending on how well they are positioned at lunch they will probably up the run rate at some point and try to get in a lead close to 200

Chasing that much for England will not be easy at all because of Warne, Mcgrath, the pressure and a 5th day pitch.

KaSaNoVa_G
10th September 2005, 19:06
yeah aussies can still win it... england need to now 4 yet worry
about the run rate.. dont let the aussies score too fast...

also i have seen many teamz who need a draw in order to win
the series come out 2nd innings and try blocking each and every ball..
england should not do that.. just play their normal game n hope 4 the best..

any more rain n then yeah aussies most probz wont win...

Australia definetly have the upper hand, but I wont quite count England out as of now. From what I saw today the pitch was starting to misbehave a bit and with a bit of aid from swinging conditions and better umpiring, all these talks about Aus batting the whole day and declaring might be premature. A couple of early wickets tomorrow morning and Aus might well have a lead of maybe only 50-70 odd. Martyn, Clarke, Katich, and Gilchrist are all in scratchy form and it might well be that Aus end up around 425-450.

96 runs behind. - about 1 session to knock them off if u take into account the new ball due in the morning..will slow the morning run chase.

best thing is they declare early ..otherwise England will go off for light when offered instantly in whatever position they are in.

best give england an hr to bat..otherwise it will be alot harder.

defensive fields 2mrw. they will limit the runs available.

Hayden may need to up his game too.

Light offered and they are off but that is sad. They had two spinners operating, and Warne does a unbelievable delivery and all of a sudden, Vaughan struggles to see the ball? Well obviously, seeing that Warne beat the bat, but not because of the light just becasue of Warnes brilliance. This is what test cricket is about, not about protecting batsmen against two spinners!

Amir
11th September 2005, 15:02
Not even 100 kph! Pathetic stuff from umpires. And I am not saying this against England, I would say the same if England was in this position. Test cricket should be fair to both sides and each ball should tried to be played, rather than protect batsmen against a spinner(who is bowling with much air inthe 2nd innings) and a part time trundler.

googly
11th September 2005, 15:08
Umpires have to use the same light standards throughout the test and the Aus set the standards for this test by walking off day before yesterday. So whenever the light becomes worse than it was when Aus went off, it will be offered to the batsman. Its not the umpires fault but Langer, Hayden, Ponting, and Buchanan who came off day before.

It is very naive to compare a fast 90 speed bowler with a leg spinner!!! Who ever compares them is very childish. If flintoff has pace, amourey, conventional and reverse swing, bounce abd explosive batting than in afridi defence he has leg spin, off spin, faster bowl, bounce(on bouncy wickets) and explosive batting. It is impossible to compare a fast all rounder with a spin allrounder:9:

MIG

England cannot afford to defend or attack too much...have to find the perfect middle way.

Kashif
12th September 2005, 10:45
It was in England's interest to take their time yesterday with taking the wickets. You can argue that Australia would have scored more runs then. To bat for an Ashes win for the first time in nearly 20 years on the last day playing Warne and McGrath might be too much. Can the English batsmen handle the pressure? I think Flintoff will have a role to play in a fairytale draw.

Collingwood out, Jones in.

Is there enough time left to force a result?

Australia could be left facing a run rate of 5 per over to claim victory.

Any score that requires more than 4-4.3 runs per over to overhaul is an Ashes winning score for England.

Having said that, I think the Aussies are out of time. Congratulations, England.

Australia can chase 260 in 40 overs if you ask me. But its test cricket and gives captains a lot of options with bowling and fielding changes so its going to be a tough ask.. But I expect them to try and go for it.. Maybe send Gilly up the order.
