I am from Azaad Kashmir and I don't think Bassant is celebrated there.
I do not understand Bassant and why it's celebrated? what's its meaning and purpose? etc
Can someone enlighten me because personally I get the feeling from what I see on TV it's a rich middle class thing and a big waste of money.

Yar it has got little to do with class. Everyone enjoys it. It is supposed to celebrate the beginning of Spring from what I know. But more importantly, it is a chance for everyone to have some 'fun'. A kite costs little and thus can be enjoyed by most.
Good thing IMO. We lack entertainment avenues in general and this provides an outlet for the general public.

It is a very very common word, surprised you have never heard of it.. at least in schools of the Punjab that is.
It means well 'bird-watching' I guess or babe-watching....is you get my drift. Done everywhere, from shopping malls to concerts to basant.
A word not used by the senior citizens I would imagine.

Coughs , then spits out 2 year old paan.....
Never in my time, in our times, men would write long letters of love and appreciation and tie them to feet of pidgeons ( McGrath variety )
None of this ogling business that you young lads have perfected now - disgusting !
