Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was reportedly made to kneel and apologise to the Bangladesh Cricket Board president, HM Mustafa Kamal, for defending his teammates in a media interaction with the local press.

The official had questioned the commitment and sense of responsibility of the players after Bangladesh lost in Chittagong. Shakib, it has been learnt, stood up and spoke out of turn saying players don't play to lose and people should speak more responsibly. According to The Daily Star, Kamal said: "I always want 100 per cent from the players. You have to be habituated with triumph. You have to be more responsible and give it your best. It will not be acceptable if you win one day, lose the next day."

Shakib then took the microphone from the anchor and said: "No cricketer plays to lose. Everyone should speak responsibly and assist us in our job." The local press on Saturday was rife with criticism of the BCB president and carried photographs of Shakib kneeling in front of him after the ceremony with captions that the captain had been asked by officials to apologise. Those present at the interaction told HT that the president was fuming and threatened the player with dire consequences.

Shakib did not attend the pre-match media conference on Saturday and Tamim Iqbal, who came to take questions, said he did not want to comment on the incident. Apparently, the BCB has put a gag on the players. BCB officials contacted by this paper refused to come on record about the issue.

Shakib is the skipper of Abahani where Kamal is the cricket committee chairman. It is learnt that ever since Abahani failed to retain the League title after a defeat to Dhaka Mohammedan, relations between the two have gone sour.

Kamal may be omnipotent in Bangladesh but this issue could have serious repercussions if the International Cricket Council decides to investigate. Top officials from national boards who attend ICC meetings are reportedly governed by a Code of Ethics.

This code is distinct from the ICC Code of Conduct for players and team officials. If an ethics violation is reported to the ICC, an official can be asked for an explanation. If found guilty of a violation on ethical grounds, the official concerned could face expulsion from ICC board meetings.

It makes me sick.

No one has to do that. Kneel and apologise.

Sad for Shakib. He must be embarrassed.

That's very shocking. The board chairman should be sacked for gross misconduct. You cannot use your position of authority to bully people, and that too in front of the world's media. What a disgrace!

I still dont understand what wrong did Shakib do that he had to apologise? As a captain he is the leader of the team and its his duty to defend them from criticism.

Really sad for the kid.

ICC should step in .. and launch a full-scale inquiry... and if found guilty, exemplary punishment should be given to ensure such behavior is not repeated anywhere else....
Its a disgrace to the captain of the national team..

I dont see why Shakib would need to lower himself to that. If Bangladesh cricket was faced with a choice between their only decent player and this idiot of an administrator then I think there would only be one winner.

That picture is shocking. Apologising is 1 thing, but you shouldn't be forced to do that, after all it just a game at the end of the day.

Imagine Yousaf kneeling and begging for mercy in front of Ijaz Butt.

A lot of the humour is lost in translation as it is Bangla slang. But it says "Arey beta ramchagol (goat). Eat some grass and cool down. You illiterate." And the credit goes to magic_boy from BanglaCricket for this.

This guy is an idiot. He is a shameless self-promoter. He doesn't deserve to be BCB President. The only reason he is a MP is because he bribed Hasina and other Awami League leaders to get a nomination.

And tdigi he is called Lotus Kamal because that's the name of his company.

The only person who can kick him out is our PM Hasina but he can keep her mouth shut by filling it with fat cheques. The media in Bangladesh are furious and there are numerous campaigns to start an ICC investigation. Hopefully he will realise that he has no way out and resign.

Guys, we're all at sea to be honest. Some newspapers are reporting Shakib was made to do this and apologise just because he objected to the accusation of 'lack of commitment' of the players in the field from this Lotus man which touched his ego. Some sources (few) even went on to say Shakib was given death threats. Now a newspaper is coming on to quote Lotus and Shakib both that nothing like this even happened, it's all just rumours. Not that Lotus' past records are too good for that stupid incident to be true, but things are a bit fishy atm and I personally can't say what exactly is going on, whether some things are being done just to portray our cricket badly or whether what this picture depicts is really true.

But to be honest, this Lotus man was reported to behave badly against Shakib in earlier occasions as well. (that after the final match of the local league between Abahani-Mohammedan (where Shakib was the captain of the eventual losing team) and this Lotus man came on to the dressing room and insulted him real bad.

Who knows what is true!

But all sources agree that there really was a verbal spat between the two. Lotus accused the players for lack of commitment (and that in an award-giving ceremony....not wise at all!) and Shakib refused (a bit immature considering the big men do say big big things once in a while..you just have to let in get in through one ear and out the other) and said they are all 100% committed.

So the jury is still out as to whether the incident happened or not ?................
I 've seen young people sitting infront of elders like that in the photograph while discussing things, but the expression from the photo looks like he is apologising............

Equinox
23rd January 2010, 21:29
Well obviously it happened. How do you explain the pictures then? Otherwise Tamim would not have said "no comments" in the press conference and there would be immediate clarification from the BCB as the allegations are very serious. But the question is was Shakib "forced" to kneel down or did he apologise himself as he genuinely felt sorry for offending Mr. Kamal who is like a father figure. He is also Chairman of Abahani and pays Shakib's wages. That's the bit that needs clarification because whoever Mustafa Kamal may be he has no right to tell someone to kneel down.

But then again, the leading newspaper Prothom-Alo quoted both Shakib and Lotus claiming that nothing like that ''kneeling-down'' episode had happened.

Though the over-importance of it in the quotes sound like that they are either forged or Shakib was made to stay silent.

:pissed: I wanna know the truth.

The picture speaks for itself, this is obviosly not a regular position of interaction between two people and obviously Shakib looks under stress. Anything Shakib says now should be considered under stress and discounted. Shakib is a young guy so it makes it harder for him to stand up to this King Lotus. If Bangladeshi public has any self respect and dignity, they would force the govt. to have this guy fired, nothing less than that is acceptable.

If this took place in front of cameras, imagine this guy and how he treats the players behind closed doors!

And why is the chairman even so disappointed with the team in the first place? The performance that Bangladesh put up in the first Test, taking a major test nation down to the fifth day, was the best performance Bangladesh have ever put up (in any format of the game) for quite a long time, IMO.
