i always found it strange as i moved up through years and studied chemistry, maths and physics - no mention of famous muslims. After all wre it not for likes of ibn-al-attam and jabar bin nihar(hope i spelt them right) world wouldnt have known about laws of light(refraction etc) - Jabar discovered nitric acid, hydrochloric acid - and yet mendeleeev is feted for bringing us the periodic table - were it not for jabar's work - chemistry was useless.

Also we all get told about greeks doing this and that - e.g good old pythagoras theorem - yet what about the single most important aspect of mathematics? Algebra they write it here but is really AL GEBRA , is disgraceful i feel - always get told about greeks etc - why are these ppl forgotten as well as many other brilliant muslim scientists - who if it wasnt for the whole scientific/mathematical world wouldnt be the same.

Excellent thread WIY - it is indeed a tragedy but maybe our historians have been too busy with religious history and not paid attention to publicising what you have mentioned - in any case, thanks for mentioning these facts - does make me proud to have this heritage

AL GEBRA

AL GORITHM

Most "AL"'s have originated from Muslims - it is amazing. However WIY brother, I doubt this sort of stuff will be appreciated here!

is that the one that was on earlier today? it was called "What the Ancients. . . .?" or something like that? so was it good?

Just saw the BBC programme Muslim science. Fair enough I suppose for an hours TV.

But ended with the usual damning with faint praise, ie. the most important thing they did was to preserve, improve and pass onto the West the works of the Greeks. Never mind the original work!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - I MISSED IT

Best repeat it

Science and maths wouldnt be where it is today without leaps made my muslim scientists. What a glorious past islam has - i agree with MIG - we should be proud of our heritage - ibn - al - attam would have won the nobel prize at least 10 times!!!! guy was a genius comparable to einstein - but he was jewish so gets more praise

funny, because Sir Abdus Salaam was considered a non-muslim in Pakistan and this genius who won a Noble Prize was never recognised. In his name currently in Germany is the biggest and best physics school in the world

Great thread! Just to re-iterate the point about algorithm. Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Musa al-Khwarizmi wrote the first one in the 9th century & it was using this, that the first ever programmer wrote the first bit of code. Amazing! Shame that credit is seldom given where due.
Also the first ever university was in Damascus!

muslims have made great innovations, inventions and discoveries in the past..but of late, the past few centuries, we've barely seen anyone of importance. thats why the name of these great scholars has dissappeared

there was a nobel prize winner in physics from Pakistan with a Muslim named but he was considered a heretic in Pakistan because of his religious beliefs

yups..thats our standard, our only nobel laureate and most of the country has disowned him...
