You take life too seriously. It is only meant to be a joke and should be taken as such...

If we cannot laugh at ourselves then what is the point? Life is way too serious to take it seriously all the time!!
Life is a journey. It is not when you get to your destination that counts, it is what you do on that journey to get to your desitination that is important!!!
Get up in the morning and when your feet touch the ground, let the devil know that he is gonna have a tough day from you today!!!

it is true actually because you are actually lying to the person to whom you are playing a prank on. also you do not know how a person might take it and in the end you will be the one on the loosing side.
also this is a pagan ritual as far as i know.

Even five-year-olds can understand the difference between a lie and a joke.

Lying is forbidden in islam EVEN if the intention is to crack a joke.

If I laugh at a joke- say on the lines of 'an elephant said to a mouse......'- that I know must be a lie, then am I also sinning by enjoying a sin.

No.
Unless it is a malicious practical joke.

Interesting thread.
This was given a passing reference in a Jummah Khutba (sermon) once; although it was directed at novels/poetry and general literature.
I think this is the correct link: http://cambridgekhutbasetc.blogspot.com/2009/05/hypocrisy-sincerity.html
Basically, he (and the scholars) deemed it a lie if the reader was unable to discern whether what he was presented was infact true or fictitious. As such, he presented a 'grey area', where a novel was written in autobiographical form - but you are unable to discern whether it is infact an autobiography or fictitious novel mirroring society.
Coming back to the point, I would suggest most person realise and are able to discern the difference between a 'joke' and a 'lie'. However, some 'jokes' are simply not funny - and this term has come to incorporate some rather distaseful acts ('happy slapping' back in school days :)))).
