View Full Version : Waqar thrilled by great response at T20 camp, also commenting Malik-Sania

LAHORE: Pakistan cricket team coach Waqar Younis said on Tuesday that he is thrilled about the overwhelming response of the players in the on-going national training camp, but minced no words in stating that the serious-minded approach of the players was perhaps due to the recent penalties dished out to the seven leading players by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the debacle Down Under.

“I have been receiving tremendous response from the players since day one of the training camp and it has stunned me absolutely,” Waqar said while talking to reporters after the end of the session at national T20 World Cup training camp at the Gaddafi Stadium here on Tuesday.

“Most probably, it is the result of the fines and punishments handed to seven leading players by the Pakistan Cricket Board recently in the aftermath of their poor show in Australia,” he opined.

Waqar’s statement quite confirmed the fact that the PCB has succeeded in curbing the player-power in Pakistan cricket. This came on the heels of captain Shahid Afridi’s statement the other day when, despite facing a fine of Rs3 million himself, he had hailed the cricket board’s decision of penalizing the cricketers.

Even Yousuf’s decision to resign from international cricket last week could not pressurise PCB chairman Ijaz Butt who is yet to ask the stalwart to withdraw his decision or file an appeal against the penalty.

Waqar went on to add: “Though I have had my association with the national team in the past as bowling coach and as a player, I have never seen this kind of interest and commitment from the players.”

However, he said the boys were still lacking in some departments but the team management was trying to address their problems by chalking out a day-to-day strategy.

He emphasised that a lot of dedication was required from the players to overcome the weaknesses but he was expecting a good result from them in the forthcoming World Cup, which is commencing in the West Indies from April 30.

To a question, he said he had complete understanding with captain Shahid Afridi and there was good coordination between them which was essential to make things work for future.

The legendary fast bowler put his weight behind the spinners in the squad, claiming it was the strongest department of the national team and could well prove to be the trump card for Pakistan which will be defending the title.

“We have a good variety of spinners in Afridi, Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez and their presence in the team gives us an edge over other sides,” he claimed.

Waqar said the weather in Lahore was good for camp and helped the boys to gear up for the big event in the Caribbeans.

Commenting on the Shoaib Malik-Sania Mirza controversy, Waqar said Malik should be supported in this hour when he was about to take the biggest decision of his life.

“If Malik and Sania have agreed to get married, it is their basic right and they should be allowed every to live their life according to their wishes. I feel that everyone should extend him support during these times.”

He shouldn't make them work too hard or they might start deliberately underperforming to get him sacked.

Salaam All,

Just a quick note to agree with Waqar Bhai's comments, having just got back to Dubai from the training camp and having met with all the boy's after the sessions, they are all really enjoying the intensity and competitiveness of the training and are really up for the sessions each day.

Some of the boy's, as you know have taken a few knocks, as would be the case with some of the grueling drills they have had to go through, however as Wikie Bhai said it has not curbed any enthusiasm from the lads.

I'm just glad i wasn't out there myself, and had a really relaxed view in the shade, pitch side!!

Inshallah all this hard work and effort will reap it rewards.

Bring back what is our boy's.

I'm liking what I'm hearing. Everyone thought this (no player power, lack of effort) would be the BEST thing to come out of the punishments. So far it has. I just wonder how long before their minds creep up from the dark again...or whether it will in the first place.

Great to hear some good news from the Pakistani camp. Hope this hard work pays off.

Aces, I know this is a little off topic, but is there any news on the new kit manafacturer?

Even if Pakistan don't keep the trophy, to see a team playing with passion and intensity in every game would be a huge improvement. This training seems like a step in the right direction.

This and the Mohsin Khan's plan of a back up team compromising of young deserving players who rarely get chances made me have a little more faith Pakistan cricket

Especially this piece of news.I'm glad the players are taking everything seriously.
I dont expect Pakistan to win this year's title but I'm very very glad to hear that they are showing interest and determination.

I sm starting to get the feeling that Waqar and Afridi are going to make a good coach/captain combo for us in future..

Excellent to see Pakistan cricket in the news for positive reasons. Its been quite a long time since we have had some good news. Thankfully, the whole Shoaib Malik escapade has finished and we can start focusing on more important things related to cricket.

Training on the field is important - although I am hoping they all are sitting together and preparing tactics to counter both Bangladesh and Australia. Not anything extensive of course but it might provide some direction for their training as the world cup gets nearer.

Just to let you guys know, I have just completed a new kit deal for the Pakistan cricket Team for the next two years.

I cannot release the name of the company yet as they will have a launch of the kit prior to the T20 world cup.

What I can say though is that the brand has a great deal of passion about cricket and has a genuine love for PAKISTANI cricket.

The brand is an aggressive player on the cricket market which will be seen in terms of top players who will be using their equipment.

Also for fans it will be an opportunity to get your hands on official replica kit that will be available extensively through retail outlets and online.

The brand will be running campaigns etc through PAKPASSION so stay tuned for more info as and when it becomes available.

Okay, sounds interesting. Has this 'brand' already sponsored Pakistan in the past, or is it a whole new brand? :)

tomorrow we'll probably get breaking news that Afridi has had a sex change and Waqar has renounced Pakistan and moved to Bolivia.

So take each milisecond as it comes and don't think about 'things to come'...i've given up on doing that with Pakistan now!

Waqar is a great bowler but I am not sure about his cricketing acumen for a coach. From what I have heard of him from the commentary box he doesn't inspire much confidence. Once on Sl tour he said he though Pak. were favourites for test series after their 20-20 WC win. Hmm!
