Silent letter ruling in English never makes sense to me. What's the whole point of it? b/w try to pronounce following words:
Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
Floccinaucinihilipilification
Honorificabilitudinitatibus
Longest words in english...got it from wiki.

The best thing to do is to go to Dictionary.com where you can search for the word and then click on the speaker sign to hear the pronunciation.
I agree with Kriketer regarding the silent letter ruling. I once had a colleague whose name was 'Cockburn' and i never knew that this is pronounced as 'Coburn'. So it was quite funny the first time i met him. Though what's the point of having the letters 'ck' in there if you dont want them in there. :-)
