View Full Version : Possible England Final Excites Clarke

ustralia captain Michael Clarke admits meeting England in the final of the World Twenty20 would be an ideal way to set the stage for their upcoming Ashes series.

England face Sri Lanka in the first semi-final of the World Twenty20 at the Beausejour Stadium on Thursday, with Australia up against defending champions Pakistan at the same venue on Friday.

Australia beat the West Indies by six wickets Tuesday to maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament.

Asked after that match how he would feel about playing England in the final in Barbados on Sunday, Clarke replied: "I'd look forward to that, yeah."

England hold the Ashes after a 2-1 series win on home soil last year but in November will travel Down Under where they haven't won a Test series since 1986/87.

"If we beat Pakistan and meet England in the final it would be a good start to what is going to be a very good and interesting summer back in Australia as with the Ashes," Clarke said.

"For me right now I've got both eyes on Pakistan and I'll worry about everything else after that."

Australia haven't won either of the two previous World Twenty20s and last year's edition in England was considered by many of their fans to be a sideshow to the main business of the Ashes.

They were dumped out of that tournament in three days after defeats by the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

But it has been a different story in the West Indies with fast bowling trio Dirk Nannes, Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait in the wickets and dynamic opener David Warner leading a powerful batting line-up.

"No doubt it has motivated every player, not just throughout this tournament but throughout the last 12 months," Clarke said of Australia's Twenty20 record.

"We weren't performing as well as we would have liked in this form of the game. We've certainly improved over the last 12 months.

"We've had to work very hard to get to the position we're in.Even in this tournament there have been no easy games."

England, too, have not won the World Twenty20 title, although they pioneered the format in professional senior cricket.

But with the likes of batsmen Kevin Pietersen, Eoin Morgan and all-rounder Tim Bresnan to the fore, England have emerged as serious contenders to win this edition in the Caribbean.

"They play a lot of Twenty20 cricket in England and they've always had a lot of talent," Clarke said.

"It's great for English cricket to see them come out and gel a few new players into their squad as well."

However, he said he thought the pitch at Beausejour, which has less pace than the one at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, which has also been used for Super Eights matches and the venue for the final, would favour Sri Lanka, last year's losing finalists.

"It's going to be a fantastic game on Thursday. Again I think conditions out here are probably going to suit Sri Lanka more than England.

"Who knows what can happen? Both teams are very strong." Clarke remains wary of a Pakistan side who seem to be coming into form just at the right time, having been well beaten by 34 runs by Australia in a first round group match at Beausejour.

"This game on Friday is a huge game for us. It's going to be tough. Pakistan have a lot of spinners and they have a lot of class," Clarke said.

"Beating them a week ago is irrelevant. If we beat them, it doesn't bother me who we play in the final."

"We'll keep our fingers crossed. We'd love the trophy." source:www.cricket365.com/basket/17144/story/6150547/Possible-Aussie-England-final-excites-Clarke

Got to say he is talking sense here.

Funny how optimistic Clarke and English people are making there way to finals. Englands dream and their name of the cornw will be erased today so hold your horses Clarke. Its too early to say anything mate :)

That's one thing I can't help admiring about the Australian side. No matter how good they become themselves, they will always respect their opposition's ability. They don't take anything easy. Hence, they aren't taking Pakistan easy as well. Which just means they'll be well prepared for it.

We are in for a tough match if Pakistan brings its game to the table as well on Friday.

Australia and England are understandably favourites to go through but Clarke is right to be wary of looking too far ahead. Sri Lanka will be a tough test for England though Murali being out should help. For Aus to lose to Pakistan would require our shaky top order to fire - unlikely but not impossible. If our bowlers can get a target to defend all bets are off.

I'm fairly sure England will pulverize Sri Lanka tonight.....

and actually the thought of a potential Pakistan vs England final is quite mouth watering for me. Especially since the media will bill it up as a 1992 rematch and the chance for revenge. We'll beat them easily but we have to get past a really really tough test against Australia first.

All of you just CONCENTRATE on this sentence from Clarke:

"If we beat them, it doesn't bother me who we play in the final."

Its a sound & concrete proof that Australia is much more scared to face Pakistan than either England or Srilanka in the final...which goes to show that teams are still scared & nervous facing a mercurial Pakistan in BIG MATCHES, cheerz & ALL THE BEST!!!

But looking at most of the fans they seems to be.

Murali is not playing so it should give you guys a slight edge in spin department

At the end good luck mate :)

He is not being optimistic or anything like that. I just saw a clip of the news conference and he said it twice that Pakistan are a strong team and he has both his eyes on Friday's game.

And then he said If they beat Pakistan.

By the way being optimist is a good trait, No?

Semifinal line up wud have been excellent if SA or IND had won. SL is a boring team to watch and am hoping that they don't come in the final.

Well, Pakistan Sri Lanka final would be a repeat of last year's final - Interesting

Australia England final would be a face off between old rivals from Ashes - Interesting

Pakistan England final would be a 1992 rematch as pointed above by Hash - Interesting

Australia Sri Lanka final.... hmmm, dunno what that would be...

But interesting potential final coming up!

Rubbish. Both SA and India were too feeble to qualify despite all the hype. I am sick of all this "we didn't deserve to qualify" crap. The best four teams are through, although Pakistan is probably the weakest of them.

I can comment as I did not see the videoo

Well yeah somewhat it is good trait but these people are so confident and are certainly sure that they have booked there spot in finals

But as you said he said it twice that they will be focussing on tomorrows game so lets see what happens :)

True.. I dont think SA and India were good enough for this tournament.. Oz and Eng are yetto lose a match and SL and PAK have very good track record in this format.. So I believe the best 4 are already there..

Or, you could have a rematch of the final of the T20 WC last year.

Pak vs SL all over again.
