Sri Lanka has some stunning stadiums!

Galle has to be one of my favourites overall. Why don't they ever play ODIs there?

Galle seems to get only one test match a year, even though it deserves more. Great pitch and beautiful surroundings

Hi siccric

Galle stadium is located near a UNESCO protected site (The Galle Fort) and also the Dutch government is funding to preserve the Galle fort. Both these bodies are against developing the galle stadium as it would hamper the unique view of the fort and the Indian ocean..Even flood lights cannot be installed because of this reason. So sri lanka cricket have limited the stadium only for test cricket..

Thanks for the information. I guess the lack of floodlights adds to the special traditional feel this stadium gives

Gaddafi Stadium is a cricket ground in Lahore, Pakistan. It was designed by Pakistani architect Murat Khan and completed in 1959. Some additions were added many years later by Nayyar Ali Dada. After MCG is the world's second largest stadium.

Following the ground's renovation for the 1996 Cricket World Cup, it has a capacity of over 60,000 spectators (now 92,645 after renovation 2009-10). The stadium was originally named the "Lahore Stadium", but was renamed in 1974, in honour of Colonel Gaddafi.

NATIONAL STADIUM KARACHI

The National Stadium is a cricket stadium in Karachi, Pakistan. It is currently used for cricket matches, and is home to Karachi's domestic cricket teams. The stadium is able to hold 34,228 spectators,[1] making it the second largest cricket stadium in Pakistan after Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Its widely criticised that the city of this size with a population of over 15 million having such a small capacity stadium. In the recent past, PCB has announced on different occasions that the capacity of the stadium will be increased to 50,000 but this approval looks a bit stale at the moment.

The Pakistani cricket team have a remarkable Test record at the ground, having only lost twice (vs. England, December 2000-01, and South Africa, October 2007-08) and have won 21 times in 40 Test Matches and in over 50 years. The stadium has witnessed several memorable moments, such as Viv Richards 181 against Sri Lanka at the 1987 Cricket World Cup, Mohammad Yousuf's record ninth century of the year to break Viv Richards record of most runs in a calendar year, and Kamran Akmal's famous century against India on a very difficult pitch in 2006, after Pakistan had collapsed to 39 for 6, as part of a memorable come-from-behind victory.

Thanks for posting the pictures of Suriyawewa and Pallekele. I'm not a fan of out-of-town stadia, and I will miss the old ground in Kandy, but at least Pallekele looks to have a spectacular setting and is on a main road, so it should be reasonably well served by public transport.

Suriyawewa on the other hand looks to be the work of a megalomaniac. The issues of how spectators are expected to get to and from the ground in their thousands and where they're expected to come from are completely beyond me!

Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lahore. Used to be the venue for test matches in the 50's but was replaced by Gaddafi Stadium. Warm up matches ahead of the Lahore test also used to be played here.

This is the ground where Mohammad Asif came alive, just under 5 years ago. He ripped through the English batting taking 7/62 in 16 overs.

Oh good to know that you met your wife in unawatuna the beach paradise.Hope you will be around for the world cup next year..with matches at pallekele , hambantota and the renovated premadasa.

I am planning on going to most (if not all) of England's group matches in the World Cup, but those are all in India and Bangladesh. Some long train journeys will be involved getting between those fixtures! I don't know when I'll be back in Sri Lanka next, but I think we're scheduled to be touring there in early 2012.

Some more pics - Multan followed by Faisalabad, firstly showing scenes inside the ground, secondly scenes outside the ground of those who didn't succeed in getting in. Who says nobody watches Test cricket in Pakistan?!!!
