Is south indian Dosa gaining customers in pakistan? I just read in an online magazine that pakistanis (esp in karachi) have taken a liking to dosa and other chaat items. Is it true or just masala news? Dosa is also called masala dosa and I have consumed it here in Toronto.

Chaat has always been very popular in Pakistan, for a very long time now. Dosa is certainly not a commonly consumed item though, although most people have tried it a few times. But certainly not very popular or anything.

I'm talking about Karachi here btw.

Not popular in Faisalabad or Islamabad - my cousin is in the 'food business'

The traditional Pak street snacks still prevail

Punjab in general is not very innovative when it comes to these masalaydar dishes, also they can't handle all these teekha masalas very well!

In punjab only good old "DAHI-BHALLAY", "GOL GAPPAY" and "Fruit chaat" can survive!

Do protect but at least first try to make all these items worth protecting!

The rape that punjab do with chawal in the name of converting them to "Biryani" is one of its own kind ..and then they say there's nothing special about all these dishes and that they are much better of eating their typical "channay- chol" (chawal) , aalu matar gaajrain, saag, methi palak, aalu gosht and what not!

I totally agree with BIRYANI , there are some exceptions but most people don't know how to cook real biryani (my wife does for sure though:) ).
Other than that, you are just being jealous ascher :P because Nihari, Chicken/Mutton Karahi, Hareesa, Siri paye, Murgh Chanay, Haleem, Halwa puri, Tandoori chicken (or Sajji) etc are specialities and Lahoris in particular definitely know how to cook these dishes (probably better than most people in Indian subcontinent)

As for Dosa, one of my South Indian friend took us to eat a very SPECIAL dish few years ago and that was DOSA, none of us really liked that at all. I tried once more but it was nothing special again, maybe i went to wrong places but i am yet to taste nice Dosa.

Dosa was never popular among Indian Punjabis. So i doubt it would be very popular among Pakistanis.

I like Dosas though.

Agree with you about everything except the NIHARI part, if you think that Lahore makes good Niharis, then I'm guessing you have'nt tasted the ones made in Karachi, even though I've shifted to Lahore now, Niharis do remind me a lot about KHI.

haleem (in particular), nehari, chicken/mutton karahi of Lahoris are just over rated, Just try to eat the karachi version of it (especially haleem) and you would understand what I am trying to say!

though, yes, when it comes to dishes like halwa puri, siri paye, murgh channay, sajji etc, no one even comes close to punjab!
