View Full Version : "We are Here to Put Smiles on the Fans Faces" : Yawar Saeed

Saj
29th June 2010, 21:38
The Pakistan cricket team currently in England at the start of a three month tour where they will take on the hosts and Australia, are in England to entertain and put smiles on the fan's faces, according to team manager Yawar Saeed.

Speaking exclusively to PakPassion.net ; Yawar who was also team manager in 2009 when Pakistan surprised the cricketing world by lifting the Twenty20 World Cup after a shaky start stated "We aren't kidding ourselves, it's going to be a long and tough tour. Six tests, four Twenty20 fixtures and five one day internationals is a lot of cricket, but we will give it our best shot, play some good cricket, entertain and put smiles on the fan's faces. I feel we are well prepared for the series' and we can do well".

Saeed didn't want to focus on past controversies which seem to follow the Pakistan team when on English shores. The Roy Palmer, Javed Miandad and Aaqib Javed disagreement, ball tampering allegations and the Pakistan team being led off the field by Inzamam ul Haq at The Oval on the last full tour are just some of the unsavoury and unfortunate incidents that have occurred when Pakistan have toured England. However Saeed wants to wipe the slate clean and ensure that cricket is the real winner and talking point on this tour.

"What's happened in the past is not something I want to focus on or indeed talk about. We want cricket to be the winner on this tour and will play the game in the best spirit, to ensure that when we go back to Pakistan, it's the cricket that is talked about, not any other incidents".

Upon completion of the current match against Kent, Pakistan then take on Essex and Northamptonshire, before they take on Australia for the first time this summer at Edgbaston in two Twenty20 internationals on 5th and 6th July.

Aside from the selections the tour has already started off poorly. The side game against Kent was important, yet there is no Azhar Ali and Yasir Hameed here to face off against the likes of Robbie Joseph, Mark Lawson, and Azhar Mahmood. The PCB needs to stop pocketing money and organize these tours properly. If they can't do that, then they should take a hike.

Saj, a few questions:

1) How did you conduct the interview (over the phone, face-to-face etc)?
2) How long was the interview (was there time restriction?)?
3) Is this the whole interview? If not, will you be publishing the whole conversation?

As previous posters have indicated, I believe you (i.e. PP) should take the iniative, for the betterment of Pakistan cricket, and take to task those who make the vital decisions in our cricket administration.

Of course, I don't expect you to rabidly tear him apart like Jeremy Paxman, but I think a question along the lines of, ''There are rumours that YK is not selected due to personal conflicts, rather than based on performance? What is your honest view on that?''

Maybe follow it up with: ''Why was Yasir Hameed selected, if you are selecting players based on performance?''

Maybe even make him take an oath on the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. ;-)

Ask why Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal are in the team? That is the only question that needs to be asked. Kamran Akmal's dropped catches are more detrimental than any amount of runs that he may get. Malik has done nothing since he left the captaincy. His test record even during his captaincy is poor. Yet he's an automatic. Why?

Will players in domestic cricket have the opportunity to have 5 hrs in the nets to prove themselves? If that's all it takes then give me try out. Why are these questions not being asked by anyone?

Let's face it Pakistan are the new West Indies. We must get used to losing. Oh yeah the England team Pakistan will face later in the summer is different than the one Wasim and Co would mow through. They have a better spinner than us. They have better plans and strategy. Much better fielding. Unity. And they have players like Morgan, Kieswetter, and Pietersen. Sprinkled in with a bunch of professional performers like Collingwood, Strauss, Bresnan, Anderson, and Broad.

First of all we are much more better than Westindies and secondly Pakistani spinners are much more better than England's.

Maybe, why was Yasir Hameed dropped in the first place if you take players based on performance?

Maybe for a very average performance in last 2 test series in ODIs

Although he is no worse than Farhat and comparable to Butt

absolutely spot on, these are the questions that should be asked of the like so yawar. i would imagine he would deny any responsibility, but as part of the management set up, thats no excuse.

I don't understand why he would deny responsibility?
It is manager's job to make sure boys are there on time with proper kits and all arrangements are done.

Instead managers are involved in picking teams before the match and half the team is left behind in Pakistan.

MS, apologies for not getting back to you sooner on this.

The main purpose of speaking to Yawar the other day was to find out about Afridi's injury.

A few more questions were asked but no "real replies" were received, so therefore I didnt bother adding things like no comment etc in the article.

Also you have to remember that PCB employees are not permitted to talk about things like selection issues and particular players not being selected etc.

Let me give you an example, the other day when I spoke to Wasim Bari I specifically asked him about Younus Khan's omission from the squad for England. He listened to my comments and question carefully, but responded with "I am employed by the PCB, therefore I cannot comment on why Younus Khan was not selected for the tour of England".

Saj,
Thanks for the clarification. Maybe it will help that you metnion in the article that Mr. Saeed was asked about this this this but he declined to comment. I know it sound like taking space but it shows that you are not side stepping the issues as well as that PCB official avoided answering the question.

For the first time I have to give some respect to Bari for his response. I wish why over players have to blabber all over the place and cannot answer in the same way Bari just did to question they should not be answering???

Thanks for the clarification Saj (albeit, a belated reply). :)

So there's essentially censorship with what officials can and cannot say in the media?

I wonder why they still come up with some rather outlandish statements then! For instance, Afridi saying YK was not selected due to performance and disciplinary issues!

Anyway, I think I quizzed you earlier with similar questions, and I politely recommended then, and will again, :maybe you should say I asked this question, yet he didn't reply (as you did in your post above). I think this would elevate your level of journalism (with all due respect - you are way more qualified to talk about this field, but just a helpful suggestion). :)

"We aren't kidding ourselves, it's going to be a long and tough tour. Six tests, four Twenty20 fixtures and five one day internationals is a lot of cricket, but we will give it our best shot, play some good cricket, entertain and put smiles on the fan's faces."

Yeah well if he did the actual job he was meant to and didnt turn a blind eye to things and act like a incompitent fool then we may have had some smiles on fans faces during the summer.

Its strange concidence that Oath taking incidents and the summers farce both took place with this guy around.

Has nobody checked this guy out?
