Shaun Tait v Kieron Pollard - The Biggest Six in Cricket History? (Post # 72)

Tait to Pollard, SIX, that's a mow and it's disappeared, he was anticipating the short ball and he was right, it was outside off, he had set himself up for it and thwacked the poor thing miles over deep midwicket, they're both enjoying it, jiving to the music while the umpires wait to bring in the new ball

This hit was measured to have gone a whopping 120 metres.

    Biggest six ever?

and it definitely wasn't a mow as Cricinfo are putting it, was a proper hook/pull.

    outstanding stroke.

best part was Pollard and Dravo were shaking their heads to the music like this while they were waiting for the replacement ball:

wrong theory , it would have helped if he was trying a upper cut or some other shot just guiding the ball ...a pull shot of a head high short ball from Tait , is just unbelievable ...not a huge fan of Pollard , but this was just WOW

It would help regardless, albeit to a lesser extent than a shot going in the direction of the ball (e.g. upper cut). Pace on the ball means it hits the bat harder and in theory should travel further compared to spinners where you need the batsman to put all the effort and pace on the ball.

Measuring sixes is just like measuring bowling speeds, depends on the equipment.

Didn't realise this was taking place in SA.

The biggest sixes have been hit in South Africa due to the thin air at some of the grounds. The 2007 world T20 had some massive ones including 119 from Yuvraj and 111m from Mishbah.

Not sure the venue of this mickey mouse game but it's possible Pollard can hit that distance in SA if it's a high altitute ground. It's highly likely the Indians would up the distances in their equipment since they have done this with their bowling speeds in previous IPL's.

Anyway the proper Champions League is on, Man Utd v Rangers.

Just to make one thing clear for everyone, the six measurements used by tv channels is highly unreliable and based on luck depending on where you hit the shot

Take an example, a player hits a shot and it is intercepted by the stands, the measurement will only be recorded until the ball hits the stand whereas if the ball finds a gap between the stands it will be measured until it hits something (the road, a building whatever)

For fair analysis on measuring the biggest sixes, they should measure the projected trajectory of the ball until it hits the ground. ie ground distance travelled by the ball

For fair analysis on measuring the biggest sixes, they should measure the projected trajectory of the ball until it hits the ground. ie ground distance travelled by the ball

the company that is producing the CLT20 is the same one producing the ICC World Cups, so making it a broadcaster bias issue is just BS.

go see the shot and see for yourselves, it was a massive blow.

    No they don't

They just measure how much distance the ball travels until it is intercepted by something

For fair analysis on judging how big a six is, it should measure the ground distance a ball travels/projected to travel until it hit the ground (bounces) for the first time

Couldn't tell much from that video but it didn't look that big. I don't think Pollard got over the ball properly and the mid wicket/cow corner boundry is not as big as the straight. With the help of altitude it may have reached 105 metres.

Seemed like the circus in the background was hyping it up.

Most aren't recored AZ. Only in T20 do we get the distances.

Gayle in 2009 T20 World Cup at the Oval hit a couple of huges ones. Can't remember exactly but I'm sure on of his hits was around 115m.

its not that big. The side where he hit it has a small section for fans and it just cleared that. it went high but distance wise (before bounce) wasnt that long

^I think that was in 2007 WC where Misbah hit 111 m while Yuvraj hit 119 m.

I remember that, it was the Millennum stadium in Cardiff...if i remember correctly it was straight up in the air and probably would have been caught in a real game

Also what about Marlon Samuels against Ryan Sidebottom at the oval...a few of the commentators were saying it was the biggest they had ever seen?

With the modern technology surely it shouldn't be very difficult to measure that giant six? Really wana know how long that was. 135-140 m maybe?

The one Morkel hit onto the brewery was over 120m. Pollards is huge but the boundry wasn't big and there was only one stand. Compare it with these three and it starts too look small.

There was a six back around 06 at the Oval in a T20I (WI Vs Eng) which went out of the ground. Marlon Samuels hit Sidebottom over the leg side, not sure if this was measured but it looks similar to this Pollard one.

LOL what difference does the stand make when the dude has hit it out of the park?!

and no it does not look small compared to these 3 FFS, the Perth one might be bigger than Pollard's, but we don't know that for sure...other 2 were definitely not bigger hits.

does anyone have footage of the Morkel one?

16.2 - Sidebottom to Samuels, SIX, that is quite simply massive. Outside his leg stump, Samuels just flicked it - nothing more than a flick over midwicket, over the stands and into the road! That was quite enormous - the timing brilliant

Slight delay while they replace the ball, which is probably rolling down the street towards the tube station.

In 1899 Albert Trott cleared the the Lord's Pavilion, a feat which despite all the cricket played at Lord's since has never been repeated. A six by Keiron Pollard this season in a T20 match cleared the roof, although not technically the pavilion itself.

The following article from the Middlesex CCC website about Pollard's shot may be of interest, particularly the mention that Albert Trott's amazing hit wasn't even his biggest at Lord's!

Your having a laugh AZ. It just went behind the stand and Ganguly himself said that was a short boundry. Ganguly wasn't the biggest six hitter. The stand must have been around 95m and it probably traveledl another 15, so 110. It certainly didn't look like a 120m hit.

All of Afridi's were bigger. He hit them with ease. Head was still not bopping around Reggae styleee.

Anyway we know Afridi is the all time greatest six hitter.

273 ODI sixes and I don't think any have been recorded. He hits them so clean the chances are he has hit the longest six ever. Maybe even the top 5 biggest ever.

Sameuls was a sweet pick up from the legs.

Here is the only man who decides to hit 6 sixes before the first ball and nearly does it.
