'I Give You Interview and You Want Controversy?'

These were the words said to Jonathan Agnew on TMS by Shahid Afridi.Agnew was interviewing him after the final game and Shahid asked ICC to bring in UDRS in ODIs.Agnew tried to be clever and encouraged him to into details why he wanted UDRS at this point afridi lost his temper and ripped into Agnew.

"I agree to give you guys interview and you want another controversy.I tried to be positive and .............at this Agnew was lost for words and interview was over.

I am sure it can be found on BBC website.

I am sure he was asked about an announcement he said he was going to make after the series was over and if I heard right afridi responded by saying he will do it once he was back home.Surely someone else will be able to back me on this.

I just heard from a friend who was watching the Geo Super correspondent Yahya Husseini saying there was a complete breakdown between the coach/management and senior players and that Afridi had to end up playing their roles. Also said Shoaib took 3-4 painkilling injections and played only because Afridi asked, apparently Waqar didn't even bother.

Agnew has previous record of throwing hissy fits.

He got upset last year when a Guardian columnists wrote a satirical article on an interview he did with Lily Allen. Then, as now, he used twitter to drum up an online army to attack the journalist.

He is doing this now by linking to this thread on his twitter account.

As a cricket correspondent he should be prepared for ppl to disagree and even criticise his views. Instead he just wants adulation. Well that's what your twitter account is for mate. Leave this place be.

Agree. I think most of the critical comments on this thread came from people who haven't actually heard the clip. He didn't bring up the UDRS issue, Afridi sort of mentioned it out of nowhere, and from Aggers' tone when he said "oh you mean the lbw", he seemed surprised/sympathetic. Don't think anyone disagreed about how shocking that lbw was, but I think Afridi really didn't want ONE more controversy at the fag end of the tour which is what could explain his reaction.

Having said that, I think it's a bit silly to complain about the reaction on an online forum, you have to expect that as a journalist, specially in these sensitive times!

    Thanks TGK.
People who are saying Agnew was the innocent journo in all this need to listen to the interview again. He asked afridi about a statement he was going to make at the end of this tour to which afridi replied that he will do it once he is back home.To me afridi,s reaction to UDRS question was may be because of that question.

There is a grain of truth in both sides of the argument. At the risk of being boring, here is why:

To cut a long story short, for anyone that has to be deal with the English and their progeny across the world, 'be who you are' -- never let it get to you. It works. Be nice, be courteous, never raise your voice and forget about the English being of the white race, one-time colonials, sometimes racist, etc. -- and just be who you are and never adjust your behaviour for the English -- they will spot you a mile away. Having lived around the world, no culture is more adept at noticing how you behave towards them than the English. So, if one behaves
naturally then the only label applied is: 'unpredictable'.

Afridi reacted in exactly the right way, and so did Ijaz Butt. Even if Butt has to apologise at the end of the day, he has made his point, and by not ignoring him and in fact agonising over him, the ECB has been warned. They will not be as friendly as before, but with the English, mutual respect is a far better place to be in than friendship for that is never there. With Afridi, as with Ijaz Butt, the sting of the stung was clear.

    (edited for clarity)
Regarding the spot-fixing NOTW investigation, Amir,Asif and Butt appear guilty of doing something unprofessional -- either for kicks or for money. To let this blow into an indictment of an entire noble team and nation was a conspiracy of omission of the entire establishment, with a green light from the Indian-dominated ICC. One can only see the current Commonwealth Games issues to get an idea of how 'balanced' coverage can and should be and how the government and quasi-government bodies can influence the debate when required.

Never underestimate the ability of the English to use language in ways to mean things that a non-native would never get the gist of. The unique cockney rhyming slang that is fading away now was built on semantic linkage between words that had non-semantic linkages.

To be frank, I admire the English' mastery of the meaning, idiom and delivery of their language -- there was a time about 150 years ago that Urdu had the same nuance used in daily conversations in Delhi and Lucknow. It serves the English well, and nuanced spoken language is a pre-requisite for creating new ideas and conveying the exact meanings to the audience -- which in turn is a pre-requisite for civilizations and empires.

Having mentioned my admiration, the non-English can never please the English, as is the case with other historical people like the Arabians, Persians, Chinese etc. Either we will be too emotional, or too indifferent, or too dirty, or too fussy, or too clean, not integrated enough, or too integrated. The only bad thing about this is that more often than not, they will generalise their observations to the group, and not the individual.

So, for anyone that has to be deal with the English and their progeny across the world, 'be who you are' -- never let it get to you. Works with Obama, and works with Afridi. Be nice, be courteous, forget who they are (white, colonials, sometimes racist) and just be who you are and never adjust your behaviour for the English -- they will spot you a mile away. Having lived around the world, no culture is more adept at noticing how you behave towards them than the English. So, if one behaves naturally then the only label applied is: 'unpredictable'.

    UNDERLYING ISSUE
    ==============
The amount of hold that the government and quasi-government bodies have over the media is massive -- all informal, but massive. The NOTW work was admirable, but could have been put in perspective by the mainstream media, ECB and ICC.

The guilty should be isolated and punished, and Amir,Asif and Butt appear guilty of doing something unprofessional -- either for kicks or for money. To let this blow into an indictment of an entire noble team and nation was a conspiracy of omission of the entire establishment, with a green light from the Indian-dominated ICC.
I agree with you , that was pretty boring, I couldn't read it all. Sorry.

hmm, you could be right about the reason for afridi's (over?)-reaction, but i think it was really just because he didn't want yet another controversy. i'm sure there are some silly icc code of conduct regulations against directly criticising a specific umpiring decision in public, so good on afridi for being cognizant of that while registering his complaint in an acceptable way.

that being said, i don't think there was anything wrong with agnew asking that question about afridi's announcement. he clearly says that afridi told a journalist that he would make an announcement at the end of the tour, so what's wrong with the journalist reminding him of this announcement in his last interview on the tour?

an online forum is exactly what it is.. its a forum where millions of pakistan cricket fans come and post their opinions and comments.. like any other forum, its never going to be all in unison. its going to be extremely hard to expect a membership as huge as PP to all agree on an issue and post PC comments at all times.

So I dont really understand what Agnew was originally expecting from PP when he posted this comment.

If it helps, the forum admin team has tried to stay neutral on the issue and some have posted their dislike for the way NOTW and the British media is aggravating the issue or Botham who is quite simply an idiot for calling for our team's ban.

I am sure if you go to a British forum, you will see nothing but hatred and dislike there for the Pakistan team. So I am not sure what point is this guy trying to prove.

Even if Butt has to apologise at the end of the day, he has made his point, and by not ignoring him and in fact agonising over him, the ECB has been warned. With Afridi, as with Ijaz Butt, the sting of the stung was clear.

Angrew got what he deserved. English media always looking for controversy. Totally irresponsible people and absolutely inhospitable to their guests. Enough is just enough. Even we as the cricket watchers are tired, imagine how much our players are suffering. Respect for Afridi for giving his two cents to this ugly mugger.

I quite like Aggers, he is unashamedly snooty!

Most of the time he is quite fair, though his cricket knowledge now appears to be on the wane.

But his voice is synoptic with BBC cricket.
