    Knocks that broke your heart....

I was thinking about knocks from opposition players that absolutely crushed me as a Pak fan. What knocks have you seen that caused you to sit in your chair dumbfounded after seeing us clutch defeat from the jaws of victory??

I'll start proceedings with a few:
In tests I remember Pat Symcox hitting a match saving hundred when RSA were 166/8 in a huge partnership with Boucher. The match may have been drawn but damn it certainly felt like a defeat.

In ODIS Andrew Symonds 143 not out in the 2003 WC after we had half of their team out for under a hundred especially considering our bowling attack that game.Waqar why didnt you bring Shoaib back earlier!!!

And finally in T20 that innings from Michael Hussey in the last T20 WC were he did the impossible.

    List yours....

Headingley '87 was pretty bad after Pakistan were saved by the rain in the previous test.

    The WC final in '87.

Middlesex vs Warwks in the Natwest Final of '89.

Adelaide '06 - England got 550 first up and still lost.

I guess you did not watch the game. Here are the bowling figures in 2nd innings.

    Waqar Younis 6 0 27 1 4.50

    Abdul Razzaq 4 0 17 0 4.25

    Saqlain Mushtaq 17.3 1 64 3 3.65 (1w)

    Danish Kaneria 3 0 18 0 6.00

    Shahid Afridi 11 1 40 0 3.63

One thing that stands out is lack of overs bowled by pacers. It was dark and idiot moin khan kept the spinners on to make life easy for Eng batsmen. If waqar and razzaq had bowled we could have saved that game.

    Heart-breaking knocks?

Jadeja (did not see live) 1996 QF, Symonds 2003 Jo'burg, Sachin 98 at Pretoria, Hussey in semi-final at St Lucia. In tests..?? It would probably be Gilchrist 1999 (did not see it)

Surprised no ones mentioned Stuart Broad's 150 here

That takes the cake for me. We'd have equalized the test series against England in England but for that knock, thats bigger than the t20 world cup and Hussey's innings for me personally

This is from my cricket watching memory ofcourse, didn't follow cricket back when Gili won the match for the Aussies in Hobart, I'd imagine that would be even sadder

I certainly consider the Gilchrist one worst, especially against the bowling line Pakistan had.

The spot fixing saga has put a big question mark over that series for me, it's taken the shine off the Oval win and also taken the edge of the other losses.

    some Kolkotta memmories haunting ..

    Desilva's fifty in the WC 96 semi-final.

    Anwar's 180+ in the test in 1999.

both these matches were pretty in our pocket until these two guys turned it around. still can't get over that Azharudin dropped a dolly at slip when Anwar was on just 2

recent ones, Kamran's century at Karachi.

both these matches were pretty in our pocket until these two guys turned it around. still can't get over that Azharudin dropped a dolly at slip when Anwar was on just 2

recent ones, Kamran's century at Karachi.
never liked azhar after that drop catch!! it was really a dolly!

Dinakar - speaking of Calcutta memories, you forgot Saleem Malik's epic thrashing in 1986/87?

Again, was a game that India seemed to have in the bag till Malik went berserk in some glorious hitting.

I started hating Maninder Singh after that match. Saleem Malik literally killed him during that knock. Single handedly won it for Pakistan

Oh and how can I forget Pandit missing an easy stumping chance of Malik early on in his innings!

The Melbourne test in the 06/07 Ashes was pretty sickening as well...okay we had lost the Ashes, but after making 159 in first innings, we had them 80-5 on the second morning, and there was suddenly hope of regaining some pride. the next day the sixth wicket fell at 360 due to Hayden and Symonds centuries, and we went on to lose by an innings. simply painful to watch!

Graham Gooch sweeping gloriously to 115 in the 87 WC semifinal
    Gooch's 333 and 123 in that Lord's test in 1990
    Miandad's last ball 6 innings
Inzi and Younis partnership at Bangalore (even though I was in the crowd cheering for eveyr run being scored)
Cairns' 100 in the 2000 CT final
    Mushfiqur's 50 in that 2007 WC match
Symonds 150+ in that Sydney test in 2008

Too right - Singh was a very decent bowler and often a thorn in Pakistan's side before then. Never the same again after that mauling though.

Malik was such a talented batsman!

Shevag's triple in multan...the way he treated Akhtar & Saqlain was heartbreaking..finished Saqlain's career & that knock came from nowhere..no one had anticipated this from Shevag..

Harbhajan sardar six against mohammad aamer on2nd last ball in Asia cup recently..

    Hussey semi finals innings..

The reason above 3 hurt the most if bcoz they arrived unexpected..

Sachin's 98 in WC 2003..the way he went after Akhtar early on was scary to see..

Symond's 143 in 2003...that knock was just pure class...again unexpected..

Langer innings in Hobart..i won't say Gilli innings bcoz i distinctly remember he was out to Akram but umpire cheated..

Ganguly's century when they chased 303 in Bangladesh..those days 300+ in first innings meant a 100% victory..

but I haven't watched it. I started watching cricket regularly and completely only from 89 onwards, although watched partially the 87 WC. yes, for those who watched that could be very heart braking, well so Miandad's century with last ball six. but i had just read about these two inningses.

Think it was Langer and not Gilchrist out to Akram, clearly caught behind, a big edge away from the body but not given.

I dont know about oppositions innings but Misbah's knock in final of t20 2007 was enough to break so many hearts

tendu's 98 in 2003's WC was also heart shattering.

If there is one knock in ODI that devastated the psyche of indian fans for a long time then it is the Jayasuriya's knock of 189 in a team total of 299. India were bundled out for 54..

The total aggregate of that match is 353 and jayasuriya scored more than half of it. The only instance in ODI cricket.

If there is one heart breaking moment.. then it is the stumping of Sachin by kalu in 1996 WC
    ----

Anwar's knock of 194 is not a heartbreaker, as we all enjoyed his batting.. I was there in the stadium in chepauk... awesome knock.. i still remember his six of kumble which came my way.. He got a great standing ovation..

It was a like Englands loss in Adelaide! Thats what you get for playing negative cricket half way through the test!

Generally heart breakers happen in important matches (world cups mostly).. in all the world cup matches India won over Pak, so the first hurdle is crossed. The other two instances in 96 and 2003, india lost comprehensively against a superior team performance, so no heart breaking knock as such..

However to me the best afridi moment against India is his century in the chennai test.. the defining knock of the match.. he is a far better test player than what he thinks about himself
