Fair enough. Your definition of greatness and quality must be different then. General consensus however is that Tendulkar is greater.

Absolutely - both great players. Have ultimate respect for both.

I'd even go as far to say that sehwag has had more of an impact than teendi

It's not criticism, its ignorance. Because Tendulkar has won many matches for India as is evident from his recorded contribtions and man of the match awards won.

Secondly, that belief was strengthened only by flattering comments from Pakistani players, experts and fans. That in the 90s, Indian Cricket was all about Sachin and getting him out was top priority. No Indian made those comments, we have just taken over from Pak opinion.

Agree with the Sehwag comment though, phenomenal impact player in tests. I would put him right up there among great Indian batsmen.

We could talk about bowling of course, where Pakistan revolutionised the game of cricket, but I won't bother as you wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Sir gee, you know I believe greatness can never be measured in stats or popularity.

The general consensus you speak of must include non-Indians too, so how comes, despite the quantity of runs, not a single Sachin Century is listed in the top 100 Centuries of all time?

    Reverse swing was revolutionary.

Playing a cover drive the way it's meant to be played is not revolutionary.

Ironic. (Almost sounds like a joke)

Teendi scores 100 100s but still unable to get into ATG 100 100s

The consensus includes more non-Indian experts actually, which is why Indians took him on their head at first place. Earliest praises only came from people like Bradman, Benaud, Boycott before Shastri and co joined in.

And i respect your opinion. It's alright if you don't rate Sachin. One cant always please all and of course there are different criteria for different people. May be you know more than Bradman and Richie Benaud. I don;t doubt your genius at all.

Beta, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was banned for a match because he tampered with the ball hoping Indian trundlers could reverse the ball.

Name me a Pakistani player banned for trying to imitate an Indian batting stroke?

Sure. Mr. Roberts and co. just conveniently forgot how to do it after that series in '77.

    NH

Sachin wasnot banned. He was given a suspended ban and even that was overturned because the refree was a racist and his decision was dubious.Same happened with the Pakistani team in England.

The first player to be banned for tampering the ball,Waqar Younis.

It's just Roberts' word against everyone else in World Cricket.

Why did they bother using it in '77 then, if they were that good?

This is beside the point; he still got caught tampering with the ball. What was he trying to achieve? Reverse Cover Drive?

Pioneers are often revolutionaries, a ban here or there for Waqar Younis doesn’t matter, a small price to pay when revolutionising cricket.

Dravid and Ponting's challenge bites the dust after they retire!

Kallis has closed the gap from 3200 to 2700

Cook has closed the gap by 1200 runs

Amla now in the picture closing the gap by 1100

He did brilliantly at the start of his career but has only had 2 good years in the last 5 - all of which should have been his Peak years - he has floundered a bit!

He still has a small chance if he picks up again.

Ah right, missed the elephant in the room.

It's still a sheer drop from him to the second best - Taufeeq (among current players).

Pak is not known for producing batsmen after all. Just like you have a problem with quicks we have the very same problem with batsmen.

An average of 36 after playing only one test innings in Asia is pretty decent for a 21 year old batsman who's played in England, Australia, New Zealand & West Indies.

definitely good by our standards, but not enough to reach 10K runs, for that you need to play at least a 100 tests even that with an average in excess of 50, both scenarios seem impossible.

He'll make it back to the ODI and test team in future. Just bide your time.

Not that he'll make it to the top 10 of the run-scorers list in any case, but perhaps the highest Pakistani scorer?

Inzamam was the only batsman who came close. I remember him needing 6 or 7 odd in his last test innings to surpass Miandad, when he threw away his wicket going for a slog.

Cook might surpass Sachin in tests. I honestly dont see anyone breaking his ODI record for a long time. There is daylight between Sachin and the second highest run scorer in ODI's.

Yaah, if we take test and ODI separately then I can see Cook and may be Kohli having a shot at it.

If not Cook then some great bat form Eng/Aus will have a shot in future. They play lot of tests. From other countries, you need to have some teen genius starting early to have a shot.

Cook, I agree. For Kohli, we should wait, this could just be a purple patch. He hasn't shown that he's good against teams other than Sri Lanka/spin based attacks, which would include the score against us

I'm sure Sachin's record in tests and ODI's separately will be beaten one day.

But it'll take a long time before someone beats his overall record, if at all.

I don't agree with this. Kohli has played 42 matches against SL/Pak/BD, three spin heavy teams. He has 7 hundreds here. Then he has played 52 matches against pace heavy teams( Eng, Aus, WI, SA, NZ). He has 5 hundreds.

Clearly, he has done better against spin attacks but that is expected from an Indian but he has done enough against pace bowlers. Also, SC teams play more ODI matches so Kohli being better against spin will help him to score more 100's.

True, Kohli is not at the same stage in ODI when compared to Cook in tests but out of current lots, he is the only one seems like having a shot in ODI.

Yeah, he's young and has a better chance. However, this CT will show how close he can come to Sachin's record. If he fails against better bowling attacks, he'll need to improve or else he has no chance

I don't care honestly. Sachin became an all time great back in the 90's itself, back then he didn't have any records under his belt. He'll remain among the very best ever even if 10 more players break his record. What record does Viv Richards have apart from the fastest century in Tests? That doesn't make him a lesser genius. Don't get me wrong, holding a record is a big honor and it gives a fair idea of how great a player is, but it's not compulsory to hold a record to be considered a great/genius.

Virat Kohli in ODIs & Alistair Cook in Tests

..at this rate, these two are likely to surprass Tendulkar's records in the two formats mentioned.

Kohli: 14 ODI hundreds, avg 49
Cook: 25 Test hundreds, avg 49

    Phenomenal stats.

Can't say anything about Kohli it's still early 14 centuries in 106 matches if he can play like 300 ODI's and continue this form he will endup having around 40 centuries still behind Sachin 49 ODI centuries it's all depends on how Kohli perform in future and how many more matches he will play before the retirement...

Same can be said about Cook he played 92 Test matches and is already 28 he can do it if he play around 180-200 Test matches he need to improve his average also because sachin average in Test is almost 54 while Cook is 49 and i think about Cook future we will be able to give a better answer after Ashes...
