"I thought my career was over" : Sohail Tanvir

Left arm medium fast bowler Sohail Tanvir has faced a long and at times lonely road to recovery from a serious knee injury. It's a journey that at times he thought he would not be able to complete. However speaking to PakPassion.net ; Tanvir spoke of his relief at seeing his name listed in both the Test and Twenty20 squads for the forthcoming tour of New Zealand.

"It's been a very tough journey and I've had to put in a tremendous amount of hard work to recover from the knee injury" stated the 25 year old winner of the inaugural player of the tournament award at the Indian Premier League.

"It's been nearly 8 months of pain, recovery, rehabilitation, setbacks and then finally the relief of receiving the go ahead to resume my career. At times it's been a very lonely journey and difficult experience. Recovering from this serious injury has been a huge relief for me."

Tanvir had been ruled out of cricket after undergoing surgery on his knee in Australia. The knee injury curtailed Tanvir's international career and also resulted in him pulling out of a contract with Victoria during last years Australian domestic season. Tanvir though confirmed that at times during his recovery from injury he thought his career was over.

"I went to Australia for career saving surgery on my left knee. However, even after the surgery and during the rehabilitation process, at one stage I thought my cricket career was over. I was on crutches for 2 months after the operation and I couldn't even walk, so playing cricket was far from my mind. If you can't even walk, then playing cricket is a distant thought. I really thought it was the end of the road for me as the knee was not responding to further treatment. It was a very difficult time for me, but I never gave up, I never wanted to throw in the towel and let the injury get the better of me."

Tanvir has made a full recovery and has taken 18 wickets in three Quaid E Azam Trophy matches for Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, at an average of just over 26 and is comfortable with his levels of fitness and his current form.

"I'm feeling fully fit and happy with my form. I feel I've been bowling well and am confident that I can do well in New Zealand. It was important to start playing first class cricket and take some wickets. I'm hopeful that the good domestic form can continue in international cricket."

Tanvir who started out as a left arm spinner, before reverting to left arm medium pace bowling, last represented Pakistan in November 2009 in a Twenty20 international in Dubai against New Zealand. He thinks that after such a long break from international cricket, it will feel as if he is making his debut once again.

"It's going to be a strange feeling. It will probably feel as if I am making my debut once again. But I'm overjoyed at the thought of playing for my country once again."

Tanvir who has represented Pakistan on 48 occasions was selected for the recent series versus South Africa in the UAE, providing he could prove his fitness. However he was not included in the final touring party and explained to PakPassion.net that the decision was taken not to travel to the UAE after taken advice from the medics.

"The medics advised me not to play in the series in UAE, as the wickets were not going to be bowler friendly and they suggested that I would be better served continuing my comeback in First Class cricket and then playing in the more bowler friendly conditions in New Zealand. I wasn't going to argue with the doctors and took their advice on board and decided to carry on playing in domestic cricket."

damn, I didn't know it was such a serious injury!

hopefully he will make a strong comeback, he's a pretty decent bowler, and finally we will have a proper new ball bowler!

was quite sick of seeing getting carted all over the place.

whose place in the side will he take though? Razzaq one fluke knock has ensured that he can continue to fail in every game until our last game of the WC and he will still not be dropped.

Maybe tanvir for Rahman? Dat won't be a bad exchange

er one fluke knock? 109* yes, but he blasted 21 off 9, 31 off 24, 44 off 20, and more steady 33 off 38 and 39 off 40 this year alone, where he's averaging 55.17. His bowling is unfit for the new ball, aye, but deffo not a "fluke" player, more consistent in his role than most of the team

    I'd have, personally

(btw if Shehzad is playing then Kamran should drop down and one of YK, Yousuf or Umar should be dropped)

Dude are u for real.....I have watched at least 2 or 3 unbelievable match winning innings by razzaq in 2010. If theres one batsmen who has the ABILITY to change a match its Razzaq..............

I will have Razzaq over ALAM any day of the year........until a suitable replacement is found!! somebody like Razzaq....All rounder who can hit.

Bas yaar, Alhamdulillah, one of the few players in our team who use their heads is Abdul Razzaq. His role was never to seize 5 wickets in a blistering spell or smash top-order centuries...generally he's a support bowler (not too good nowadays I admit, and doesn't deserve the new ball anyway) and useful for quick late runs (some MashaAllah that I believe he's unparalleled at nowadays). There have been too many times when he has had to salvage a top-order stutter or enter the attack when the opposition is 100 for 0 or something. Not saying he should open the batting/bowling which is ridiculous, but Abdul Razzaq is one of the few players who actually performances solidly on a consistent basis

Then lets play him as a batsman. I can live with that but please don't label him an 'alrounder'. He is possibly the worst new ball bowler EVER in history of Pakistan criket. If he keeps his current role and continues to open the bowling then God bless us on the flat wickets of the WC

He sustained the injury at the NCA if I remember correctly during training.

At first the injury was not though to be that serious, but when he was sent to Australia, the medics there realised how bad it was.

I guess its difficult to just gauge how a professional sportsman feels when his career is in the balance. The lad has done well to recover, but I'm surprised that he's in the test squad though.

At one time, we all rooted how he was the future and had such a balanced head on his shoulders. Somehow, after that - things got the better of him. Decline of form, an alleged affair with some nameless model and whatnot.

It was sad because Tanvir does come across as a nice guy..

Hope he recovers fully and performs well for Pakistan. The country needs him and he needs the country.

I hope he has another go at Aussie domestic cricket, it is good to see players test themselves in hard, different conditions to become better, more exerienced players (Imran did it, YK has been out here among others).

he's still young and now there is a gap in the bowling ranks he will get a chance.

The only time i have seen hin hitting two sixes was T20, 2007 WC final which younis khan cost us with his poor batting and poor running!

Great to hear from Sohail Tanvir. I was lucky enough to meet him during my visit to National Cricket Academy in Lahore and I must say he is a very humble and down to earth guy.

I remember during the summer he worked very hard on his fitness. However, when I met him in summer he didn't bowl (well I didn't see him), but, he had spent good time on his fielding with fitness trainer Saboor Ahmed and also batted.

Fitness wise he looked very fit and was ready for international matches.

All the best to him, I hope he does well.

Of course not! Have you not read the article.

He has just 'recovered' from a dodgy knee, which in Pakistan cricket means another injury of the same type because not enough rest has been given.

So to answer your question, he cannot walk the walk....yet

Tanvir was only good for the x-factor he brought. His unusual action was what got him a lot of his wickets and especially in the T20 game where a batsmen doesn't have much time to settle.

As players worked him out, he became a bit more predictable. With Razzaq coming to the end and Rana no younger, he is probably next in line for that all-rounder slot. Hope he gets some games under his belt and shows some of his early potential.

this pretty much perfectly sums it up. also in his earlier appearances, he was swinging the ball more, somethign which seemed to disappear later on.

i think everybody knows that he started taking his spot for granted. perhaps his long road back was a sign from a higher power....

hopefully tanvir comes back motivated and doesn't take things for granted this time.

but at the time he left, he was completlely figured out by the opposition, and on top of that his bowling had fallen off.

Maybe he can sneak into the one day with so many players missing but the test team???

He is too inconsistent to be anywhere near the test team last time i saw him bowl he was all over the place might get away with it in t20 and odi but test i dont think he is good enough personally.

Like Shoaib Akthar said to be a great bowler you have to win a few games for your team on your own

He need to surprise the opposition with new variations! He was picked by most of the batsman easily now! And new zealand wickets suits him! This bowler needs conditions to do well! However for the wc, i don't think he is a reliable option!

What kind of message is he giving out by saying this?

He lacks determination/ambition and doesn't feel he should be here

Should say something more constructive and positive

    Interesting read nonetheless

    As always thanks for this

lol he looks like a proper Pakistani now. None of that clean shaven nonsense. (lol jking btw) Anyway, to the point, I think we have a valuable fast bowler to add to our bowling attack and with that look he'll make the batsmen make a mess in his pants!

Sohail tanvir may have taken 4 wickets today but Tanvir Ahmed deserves a chance because he took 6 wickets on debut against one of the strongest batting line-ups in the world

    Our line up should be
    A.Rehman
    Tanvir Ahmed
    Wahab
    Gul
    Hafeez
    Younis khan

    If pitch is green
    Sohail Tanvir
    T.Ahmed
    Wahab
    Gul
    Hafeez
    Younis khan

Juniad Khan should have been selected ahead of Sohail Tanvir. Test series against teams like NZ or WI are ideal to test out upcoming bowlers. Tanvir and Gul are pretty decent limited over bowlers, but they just don't look like someone who can win us Test matches or even someone who can pick up wickets in this format.
