I find it strange that many of you speak Urdu instead of your ancestral mother tongue. You shouldn't abandon your roots.
For example with Indians, a Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali person will speak their mother tongue first and if they live in India they will learn Hindi as a second language, it won't replace their day to day language and it won't become their first language.
And if these people are born outside of India they will not be fluent at all in Hindi and will only know bits and pieces picked up from films and songs.
For example my parents speak Punjabi and that's what I know, I know some Hindi as it's quite similar to Punjabi and also I picked some up from Bollywood movies.
Are Mirpuris and Punjabis in Pakistan ashamed of their mother tongue? Do people think you are uneducated if you speak these languages? Urdu comes from the Delhi/UP area, hundreds of miles away from your land. That's like an English person taking up French as his language.

Exactly! Learning other languages is always good but don´t forget your own language. I speak Punjabi with pride
even though some of the country-men around me here in Germany feel ashamed at it and usually reply with "Hummei´n Punjabi nahi naa aati,.... issliye samajh nahi aayi"
.

Very little. My spoken Urdu is quite slow but I understand it to a good level. I have to make sure I don't slip in punjabi phrases when I speak Urdu so have to overthink everything I say.
My family all speak Punjabi.

Language is a language whether Urdu Punjabi Balochi or whatever. Just a means of communication, speak your Mother tongue to remain rooted to your culture, but don't get into the linguistic "superiority" cause no language is superior to another, it's all too petty and meaningless, no language is for REAL Men or women. It's like saying Tyson or Nigel Benn are real tough men because they speak English or are black. That has no bearing on anything. It's all individual.

Not much. Everyone around me speaks English. And the grownups just laugh at me when I do speak in Urdu. Actually, when I was a kid, I spoke more Spanish at home than Urdu! XD

I speak Urdu at home and with relatives, and with cousins who are able to speak it, and English with the remaining cousins who can't speak Urdu, they feel neglected otherwise lol. For some reason people from back home are so surprised when others can speak Urdu with the proper accent & pronunciation, it's really no big deal when you've been taught to speak it since your toddler years, it's a natural progression.
