yes, understanding urdu is not a problem because many of the bangla and urdu words are similar.

if two bengalis speak in bengali, probably you will also understand majority of what they are saying.

Having been brought up in UAE and having more Pakistani friends [next in line Indians, Sri Lankans and Lebanese friends, I just dont get along with my own people ] I understand/speak urdu/hindi more than bangla. Which is just sad. Wasi -- amakey bangla shikao...ekhon !
