I think the hype has been the result of Chawla's terrible performance. Ashwin did perform well in the NZ series but then again it was against NZ so should be taken with a pinch of salt. I think there is potential in him but we have to be patient.

Gavaskar was taking a dig at those who have been dissing Chawla and talking up about Ashwin as if he was the cure for all our bowling woes.

He took a shot at such "experts" in his column before the match against WI.

Agree with that. Chawla has been terrible despite getting many chances in this WC. He should've grabbed this golden chance with both hands considering he was in wilderness for so long. But then, probably Preeti's hugs have a deadly effect on his bowling it seems.

    There you're.

Thats what bad reporting (misquoting) does to most things being aired in Indian media. Thats why we hear this thing (I've been misquoted) so many times these days.

I don't know what people see in this Ashwin guy.. for me he is just a bowler who bowls fast half-trackers. I think the Aussies will smack him around the park if he does play

It's so weird I know a lot of Indians do not like Gavaskar as a commentator, but I like him quite a bit.

And ashwin looks like a promising bowler, but he does not appear to have the control needed for one day bowling yet. You have to keep it tight.

He is Indian and he does what a Pakistan expert or ex cricket would do thats is too lift team confidence. He knows Indian bowlings isnt best but confidence can always help.

I am not sure Aswin is that good but i respect his view.

He has had a great start. Get's both turn and bounce and he is a much better choice than Chawla.

But Just like Mendis, he will be easier to face when the batsmen have been used to play him regularly and I have a feeling Watson will go after him in the quarters.

Yeah its definitely sarcasm, but Gavaskar's comments are increasingly biased theses days, Don't like his commentary any more. He was put in place by Netherlands when he said Sachin and Sehwag want to finish the game soon and attend a dinner.

The other day during the match against WI, he said the Caribbean fielding is not up to international standard, wonder what he has to say about our fielding - not up to ranji level??

Wasn't it Gavasker who predicted Pakistan would win the 1992 World Cup?
I partially agree with him. India will win the World Cup, But it will be Zaheer with the ball and Yuvraj with bat and ball that will win it for them.

    By Our Correspondent

Sunil Gavaskar usually doesn’t joke when he makes a statement on Live international television. Sunny certainly wasn’t fooling when he told a panel of experts that “R. Ashwin will win the World Cup for India.”

It was the customary Cricket Extra show on STAR Cricket channel after India defeated the West Indies by 80 runs at Chennai on Sunday night. Harsha Bhogle was anchoring the studio chat alongside Pat Symcox, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sourav Ganguly. Gavaskar and Ian Bishop were at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.

On a question on Ashwin, who took two for 41 in his full quota of 10 overs, Gavaskar said: “Ashwin will win India the World Cup.” For a young man who just made his Cup debut, this was quite a telling statement from a man whose words carry a lot of weight.

Ashwin justified his selection ahead of Piyush Chawla or an Ashish Nehra. His bowling was neat and intelligent. Skipper MS Dhoni gave him the new ball and he had the right attitude to step in and deliver. With the bat, he was unbeaten on 10 off seven balls as the rest of the batting collapsed. Hence, Gavaskar’s faith in Ashwin seems justified.

Gavaskar said India badly needed a left-arm spinner at this stage. Although Yuvraj Singh was doing a fairly good job, Sunny felt the need of a specialist. He even suggested tongue-in-cheek that India should “injure” one of its pacemen and then ask for a substitute. Hope the ICC is not listening!

If Indian spinners are given a slighty helpful track, Chawala is the best among all 6 (Harbhajan, Ashwin, Chawala, Yuvraj, Pathan, Sehwag) spinners in the team.

With these many spinners in the team, I have no idea why BCCI is not playing their matches on spinner's wickets. May be they afraid that their own batting line up will collapse against opposing spinners.

BCCI will make a huge mistake by not preparing a spinning track in Ahmedabad.

Ashwin is a good bowler. The good thing about him is that he can bowl at the PP also. Moreover he is no mug with the bat. He is a good prospect but should not be hyped. A team winning the WC has to be collective effort. One or two individuals cannot do that.

He could do some damage against teams that haven`t seen him before, but in the long term nothing special. Once teams work out the carrom ball, his stock will fall quicker than Chawla, who i still think will become a very good player with both bat and ball.

Don't know if its just me but I just find him too overrated. I certainly wish he goes far but there isn't much to be going overboard about him. Doesn't spin the ball much (barring today's match where even Nurse was spinning it), more of the Ajanta Mendis breed. And not upto his class too, poor man's Mendis if you can say. The way people worked out Ajanta, I don't see Ashwin being a threat to batsmen. He's certainly not been one yet.

2 back to back sixes off a lower order batsman and a fluke wicket. We really shouldn't be enjoying that much.

Again, I hope he proves me wrong.

Ashwin is good promising young bowler for India. He can turn the ball, but the biggest advantage is his attitude. He keeps his head cool and doesn't let himself down by the situation. That's why he is considered as good prospect in limited over cricket. He can be used in tough situations. Like most of the commentators say he thinks about his game and applies himself very well. Mental strength along with talent - I guess that's what you need to be a long-term player. He plans well and applies himself equally. He can become good replacement for Harbhajan in future though he before that he will have hurdles to clear.

I wonder about his test abilities. I'm more curious to see how well can he do in tests.

I don't think he is overrated. If you remember Kumble was not a big spinner of the ball, but he still used to get wickets. I think the key is how well you use your abilities. You can be very talented, big spinner of the ball, or really fast bowler but still not very successful. In limited over cricket he can stop batsmen from scoring and from what we have seen, he gets wicket mostly by planning. Once he batsmen decide to just play him out, he may have troubles. Then the case would become like Mendis if doesn't come up with new thoughts.

Add to that he is a good fielder and decent lower batsman. Quite useful player and captain like Dhoni can use him effectively.

    Overall, just wait and see.

2 back to back sixes off a lower order batsman and a fluke wicket. We really shouldn't be enjoying that much.

Again, I hope he proves me wrong.

Sole reason Chennai Kings won this years IPL and last years IPL.. The guy is just amazing... and don't forget, when Watson was smacking our bowlers all over the park in WORLDCUP QF, Ashwin got him bowled... For me, that delivery to Watson was the turning point for our success to WCUP.. and people underestimate his batting skills.. the guy got 2 100s in FC.. This guy is here to stay and is a champion...

don't know yaar. Still not convinced about his abilities. Playing in IPL is different. Rahul Sharma and Abdullah did well there. Doesnt mean they'll repeat it in the international arena. I'm not saying Ashwin is a bad player. He looks good but not sure about going ott for him. But fact is that am all for trying new bowlers at Intl. level for a longer run.

Infact Pragyan Ojha has shown good amount of talent. He can be tried too.

Because of Bhajji he doesn't always get a chance since they are both off spinners even though Ashwin already is better than Bhajji. I really hope Harbhajan is kicked from the team in favor of Ashwin if he continues with poor performances

Oh, now i understand the resemblance to ajentha mendis.
He will be figured out sooner or later.

He should either learn a doosra or become a full time leggie and bowl googlies

Looks a good prospect, and generally speaking like most young Indian players he will keep his feet on the ground(maybe its the education), whilst any player of ours wants to be called a senior after he has been in the team for 6 months.

Seems like an exceptional talent so far. It wouldn't have made a difference if WI had Gayle today, Ashwin has had him in his back pocket.

    But...Mendis seemed amazing too.

But unlike Mendis he is not dangerous bowler, rather he uses plans for the wickets as I said in my earlier post. Also he has guts to bowl at any situation. We often see spinners committing mistakes like bowling short or quicker ball after being whacked on a flighted delivery. He won't stop flighiting bowl even after being hit. That's just one part of his thinking. For ex - in IPL when Gayle was in very good form and hit him for a six, next ball he delivered was a good slow regular off-spin which deceived Gayle.

Like I said earlier, if he continues like this teams will either just play him off and target other bowlers or may find some other way. International cricket is not so easy especially for bowlers. You need to be improving all the time. That's what everyone who's watching him wants to know.

He's useful for ODIs and T-20s. I don't reckon he can make much of a difference in test cricket, which Bhajji can, on his good days.

IMO, he is no way over-rated but more of under-rated even to our Indian standards (remember we usually hype up our bowling talent in a big way only to end up seeing them flopping big time after few initial good games)

I have mentioned this before and I will repeat it again, he is no Mendis. Yes, Ashwin does possess Carrom Ball but his action is far too different from Mendis in every possible way. Besides carrom ball Ashwin has one of the best Arm balls for Left handers. He always almost strangles left handers from scoring quick runs resulting in taking their wicket either bowled or LBW.

IMHO, ASHWIN gonna be the future spearhead of India's spin attack

I wouldn't be surprised. I think Ashwin is more of an intelligent bowler than a talented one. If he was not decoded by Indian batsmen (considered some of the best players of spin) in the domestic tournaments and by international batsmen in 3 IPLs, there is a good chance that he is a good bowler. He carries himself well and comes across as a dignified person.

He'll put Harbajhan under pressure if he does well. India won't always play with 2 specialist spinners. Should be interesting.

I am from Tamil Nadu, so is Ashwin. I watched him playing during my college days. He scored a fifty against our college team. He was an opener then. He was also the opener for his school team as well.
