I read that back in the day Brahmins used to pour molten lead into the ears of lower caste Hindus if they even heard them talk.

Now that is really really crude. I am not surprised some of that era still remains in India.

On a lighter note, a groom on a horse with a helmet is just hilarious. Dont mean to sound insensitive but this reads something straight out of a comedy movie.

All I agree with the Quora discussion but I still see that upper cast really dont like to merry thier girls to lower class even if they are equal in all measure. My solution of this issue is, only one generation can take reservation. what do you think?

TN is one of the top 4 places in India with maximum Dalit population.

In cities, I haven't seen much issues about any caste discrimination (talking about my personal experience) but in villages and towns, it could be bad.

But I haven't seen any such crazy news like we hear in Uttar Pradesh and all.

Maybe someone else can answer this question more accurately.

In India, a fasting muslim force fed a roti becomes national headlines and leads to debates. But urinating in a dalits mouth hardly get the national coverage it deserves. Indian sickularism starts and ends with muslims.

What's up with Indian not confronting there dark side? - even the liberal ones don't admit the deep roots of cast system. Cast system is deep rooted in the culture of india, if you have a blind eye on it, you will never solved this problem.

It is one of those things you have to be ashamed of first before you can eradicate it. Cast system still play major role in marriage system. Every matrimonial site of India has cast in the form, which is frankly very racist and embarrassing practice, you may not have seen that either??

I have even heard some Indians call them Atheist and Hindu as well, which is biggest ** of all. How can you be both? - who you are trying to foul?

Almost every one of my Indian friend hates Slum dog millionaire movie, because it highlight poverty, something people are embarrass about. Well it is the cast system that has created that poverty over 1000s of year, you should be more ashamed of that!!!

Muslims have same problem unless you confront your past, you can never improve upon it, you have to call spade a spade.

This is so damming. Cast system is cancer of India. More religious they get, more segregated they will be, unless they confront the past.

I have rarely met a pundit who is ashamed of their forefathers business and involvement in creating cast based societies. Many think that's law of nature.

Dalit youth killed for keeping Ambedkar song as ringtone

Shirdi police did not respond to calls as youth was brutally assaulted

A Dalit youth was brutally assaulted and killed in the temple town of Shirdi in Maharashtra allegedly over his mobile ringtone of a song on Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Four assailants have been arrested while four others are absconding.

Sagar Shejwal, a nursing student , had come home to Shirdi to attend a wedding. On May 16 around 1.30 p.m., he went to a local beer shop with two of his cousins.

According to Vivek Patil, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sagar was assaulted by eight youths over his ringtone. Mr Patil said: “Eight youths were sitting at a table at the shop. When Sagar’s mobile rang with the Ambedkar song as its ringtone, the youths told him to switch it off. In a police statement, the cousin has described the song as Tumhi kara re kitihi halla / Mazbut Bhimacha quilla [Shout all you want / Bhim’s fortress is strong]. An altercation ensued and the assailants hit Sagar with a beer bottle and started kicking and punching him. Then they dragged him out, put him on a motorbike and took him away to a nearby forest. They crushed him under the bike. Sagar’s body was found around 6.30 p.m. in a naked state near Rui village. The cause of death was multiple fractures. The autopsy says Sagar sustained around 25 injuries. He died between 2 and 4 p.m.”

The perpetrators, a group of local youths from the dominant Maratha and OBC communities, ran their bike repeatedly over Sagar’s body mutilating it .

“I can understand that they hit him. Quarrels can happen anytime, but look at the brutality of the act. Why would they do this on such a trivial matter?” Sagar’s father Subhash Shejwal asked, unable to comprehend the horror of the assault.
    CCTV footage

The initial assault was captured on the CCTV cameras at the beer shop. The 21-minute footage, in which the faces of the assailants are clearly seen, provides strong electronic evidence to the police.

The shop itself is within a stone’s throw from the Shirdi police station, raising serious questions about police inaction. “I called the police at 1.45 p.m. when the youths were beating up Sagar, but for a long time they did not come,” said Sandeep Ghorpade, manager of the beer shop. Sagar’s cousins, who managed to escape, also alerted the police, but in vain.

The family alleged that the officers on duty demanded an air-conditioned vehicle to look for Sagar. The police said a departmental inquiry would be initiated against Inspector Pramod Wagh and constable Sharad Kadam.

“Only our relatives were looking for Sagar. No police vehicle was in sight. The body was also discovered by family members,” said complainant and Sagar’s cousin Satish Gaikwad.

The police arrested Vishal Kote, Somnath and Rupesh Wadekar, who are historysheeters and Sunil Jadhav.

They have been booked under the Sections 302 (murder), 395 (punishment for dacoity), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), 109 (punishment of abetment) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 3 (2) (v) and 3 (1) (x) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

OBC and Maratha community has done this and this is for all Indian posters saying it doesn't exist.

My observation is that i see OBC,MBC communities now fighting against Dalits, examples are these as well the ones of Vaaniyar community in Tamil Nadu which is pretty pathetic honestly coz these communities always blamed other castes against discrimination.
Every time i read such things my respect increases for Nelson Mandela as a leader i don't think anyone could had forgotten all that and led his nation.

It's a shame this sort of caste subjugation doesn't make the news over here, India is supposed to be a growing economic giant so international media attention might force them to get their house in order with regards to human rights in line with other economic powerhouses.

A Bar fight over a ringtone?Would they prefer to drink in silence? They probably got worked up on the lyrics adding that alcohol let them bring out their anger as well.
There is a lot of hatred for Ambedkar in North and i have seen it how its ridiculous.

Talk about sensationalizing an unfortunate incident.

In a conflict one guy is killed (who belonged to certain caste and had ambedkar bla bla). So create a nice headline.

I have seen similar incidents in hospitals when my dad was hospitalized.

Everyday many people do not get a bed due to shortage and corruption in govt. hospitals. One day one lady died out side hospital as she was waiting for a bed (as many poor suffer).

Headline came : A dalit died outside hospital as she was denied a bed.

People who do not understand the real problem will never be able to solve it.

Anytime a Dalit person is involved irrespective of the situation, it becomes an atrocity on Dalits. Sure, they get discriminated, but media loves to give the caste color to every incident.

I have seen a huge rivalry between Backward castes and Dalits. They do not seem to like each other at all.

You are right. I thought that the media does not highlight atrocity on dalits, but as you have pointed out, the media even paints everything as atrocity on dalits. I was so wrong.

i have problem with that poster for turning every thread into pak or islam moaning thread ..
in the cricket section a thread about welcoming zambawbe ..he started moaning about how his dads wallet was stolen lol

yes some minority's r oppressed in pak but that should be discussed in threads opened for that purpose ..

i think he didn't loged on pakpassion yet ..first thing hes going to do when he logs on internet is google some new story about minoritys in pak to post here ...or if he cant find a story "bad day for him" he trys to change the topic in other threads to get his daily dose of islamofobia to feel better ..if he dont do it he starts to get the whidrawls like from drugs lol ..just wait and see when he logs on today

While this may not be a case of outright caste discrimination, the underpinnings of their behavior definitely has a caste bias.

People who fight in bars tend to pick up fights over the slightest of things. But having a discriminatory attitude against a certain set of people makes them more likely to react to the smallest of things.

Dalit Killings: VK Singh says government not responisble for "somebody throwing a stone at a dog

NEW DELHI: Minister of state for external affairs General (retd) VK Singh found himself in the midst of another controversy over his irresponsible remarks when he appeared to compare the burning alive of two Dalit kids in Faridabad to "somebody throwing a stone at a dog" and maintained that the BJP government in Haryana could not be held accountable for it.

Singh, who represents Ghaziabad in the Lok Sabha, is not new to controversial remarks and had been in the eye of a storm earlier when he described the media as "presstitutes".

"Never associate local events with the government. For everything...say if somebody throws a stone at a dog and you say government is responsible. It is not so," Singh said in response to a question from the media on the incident in Sunped village of Faridabad in which two Dalit kids were burnt alive on October 19.

Incidentally, in previous incidents like the killing of a Muslim man in Dadri, UP, by a mob allegedly for storing and consuming beef, as well as in the murders of activists MM Kalburgi in Karnataka and Govind Pansare in Maharashtra, the BJP-led NDA government had maintained the state governments concerned were responsible as these were law and order issues.

Gen Singh's comments were similar to the comments made by Narendra Modi as the BJP's PM candidate in 2014 in an interview to a foreign news agency in which he reportedly said he felt sad about post-Godhra riots in Gujarat under his watch in the same way that somebody would feel if a puppy came under his car.

The minister tried to clarify his remarks later, but the issue had gone viral on social media. "My statement wasn't intended 2draw an analogy. My men & I put our lives on the line 4 the nation irrespective of caste, creed & religion. I standby to serve India with the same spirit, right now and always. Our nation, its success and its people motivate me daily. As citizens of this gr8 nation v r sensitive but also responsible. Agenda of India is bigger than any single neighborhood or individual. We must stand united and let no one exploit our diversity by blowing up localized issues. Jai hind!" he said in a series of tweets.

Violence against the Dalit community in India

Uttar Pradesh : A couple was hacked to death with an axe allegedly by a shopkeeper in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. What led to the gruesome killing was an argument over Rs. 15 for a packet of biscuits.

Ashok Mishra, who owns a grocery store in Mainpuri, has been arrested.

The couple allegedly owed him Rs. 15 for biscuits they had recently taken from the shop.

According to reports, Mishra confronted them when they were on their way to work at around 6 am today.

When they begged for more time to pay, he flew into a rage.

Mishra allegedly picked up an axe lying nearby and attacked the couple. Both died on the spot.

The shopkeeper panicked and hid in the village until a police team, alerted by villagers, found him.

“The villagers have told us that the couple had bought something worth Rs. 15 from the shopkeeper and that led to the killings. We have sent the bodies for post mortem and the accused has been arrested. We will take the strictest possible action against him,” said Pramod Chandra Gupta, District Magistrate, Mainpuri.

The incident has generated fresh waves of shock at a time atrocities against Dalits is being aggressively debated by political parties.

The victims were Dalits and the alleged killer is from an upper caste.

Many villagers, however, said that the accused man was known for his temper and brusque ways.

The village is on the edge and a large police force has been sent to prevent any protests or flare-up.

Earlier this month, four Dalit young men were flogged, tied to an SUV and paraded at Una in Gujarat by cow vigilantes for skinning a dead cow.

What a way to twist the news by Media.

They made it look like the couple were killed just because they were Dalit.

This is more due to a greedy shop keeper who is a monster and probably with anger issues killed 2 people. Hope that man rots in prison for the rest of his life.

India Dalit couple hacked to death over 15 rupees debt by upper class Hindus

A man from India's Dalit community has been beheaded and his wife hacked to death after a row over a 15 rupees (22 cents; 16 pence) debt in Uttar Pradesh state.

Police said the couple were murdered by an upper caste grocer on Thursday when they told him they needed time to pay for biscuits they had bought from him.

    The grocer has been arrested.

Dalits, formerly known as untouchables, form the lowest rung of India's caste hierarchy.
Police told the Press Trust of India news agency the incident took place in Mainpuri district early on Thursday as the couple were on their way to work.

They were stopped by Ashok Mishra, the owner of a village grocery, who demanded that the couple pay the money for three packets of biscuits that they had bought for their three children a few days ago, reports say.
    Protests

    PROTESTS

The couple reportedly told him they would pay after they received their daily wages later in the evening.
"While Mishra kept shouting for the money, the couple started walking towards the fields. Mishra then ran to his house nearby and returned with an axe. He hacked Bharat repeatedly and then attacked Mamta who was trying to rescue her husband. The couple died on the spot," Nadeem, a local villager, told The Indian Express newspaper.

The Dalit community in the village have blocked roads and protested over the incident.
Earlier this month four low-caste Dalit men were assaulted by cow protection vigilantes while trying to skin a dead cow in western Gujarat state.

Many Hindus consider cows sacred and the slaughter of the animal is banned in many Indian states.
In March, a Dalit man was murdered for marrying a woman from a higher caste in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

The woman's father handed himself in and admitted to carrying out the attack on a busy road in daylight, police said.

Good to see BBC stoop low to the standards of Indian media and do "almost" copy paste work by sensationalizing caste in an issue which is not caste related.

Now you know how the Muslims feel, especially those in the West, whenever someone from a Muslim background commits murder and everybody jumps on the bandwagon and starts claiming that it's a terrorist act by 'Islamists' even when the lifestyle / background of the murderer and the circumstances surrounding the killing indicates otherwise.

We are not ridiculing BBC. Caste discrimination is still prevalent in India and caste based murders do happen from time to time especially in villages and other remote areas.
But a credible source like BBC should not have a misleading headline while the content clearly shows it is not motivated by Caste prejudice.

no, regular caste related murder and discrimination in India point to a significant possibility of there being caste prejudice in India driving such things against Dalits. They are just putting the two and two together.

Dalit Man Beaten To Death By Cops For Throwing Color On Upper Caste Man In Jharkhand: Report

The widow of a Dalit man has alleged that her husband was beaten to death by police personnel in the Koderma district of Jharkhand after he threw colored powder on an upper caste man during Holi celebrations, The Hindustan Times reported on Thursday.

Holi was celebrated on 13 March in many parts of the country.

According to the HT report, Pradeep Choudhary, 52, and a couple of other villagers sprinkled color on a local chowkidar Rajendra Yadav, who got upset at the gesture and called the police to teach them a lesson. "The police started beating up Pradeep till he fell unconscious. They then took him to the police station," Jashwa Devi, Pradeep's widow, told the newspaper.

Jashwa said that her husband's body had many bruises when the police dropped him home, the next morning. She also claimed that instead of helping them, cops at the Satbarwa police station abused them over caste.

Prabhat Khabar reported that the cops took Pradeep to the hospital after they beat him in his village, but after he revived, they took him to the police station where he was thrashed again.

Pradeep succumbed to his injuries at the Koderma Sadar hospital.

Dainik Bhaskar reported that Pradeep, a herder, was the father of six children. He was beaten so severely that his body turned had turned a shade darker from the bruises, DB reported.

This alleged crime in Koderma district is not an isolated instance of violence against Dalits on Holi. In Patheri village in Ambala, Dalits alleged that they were attacked with sharp-edged weapons by upper caste men during Holi celebrations. Two of the ten injured men were reportedly in a critical condition. In Boh village in Ambala, a Dalit man was allegedly thrashed by upper caste men because he was giving sermons on Holi.

In 2015, a Dalit man in Sonbhadra district was tonsured and paraded through a village on suspicion of having burnt a "holika" pyre.

And Hindus wonder why Dalits are converting to Christianity and Islam.

The Upper Caste never considered Dalits as Caste Hindus and the rift is too deep.

The Dalit man threw color on a Gentleman by the name Yadav. Aren't Yadav's considered as Backward Caste? Then how come it is considered Upper Caste atrocity? It is more like Backward Caste atrocity over Dalits. Typical BC and Dalit riots. Common in South India too.

PS - A Dalit by the name Choudhary? Does not sound like a Dalit name. Something does not sound right. Can anyone living in that part of India throw some light on this?

I have no idea why there are still Dalit Hindus in this world. All Dalit Hindus should have left Hinduism long time ago. Dont waste your life Dalits. You get life only once and it is not worth spending it in a religion which so much discriminates against you.

Dalit Hindus have been following Hinduism for many centuries. Many have their own deities especially the Tribal ones. Its not easy to leave the existing religion or beliefs.

Dalits these days are mostly converting to Buddhism and Church has also done a wonderful job in converting thousands to Christianity. Some converted to Islam.

The problem is there is discrimination in Islam and Christianity too. In many areas, Dalits are not allowed in Churches. So Dalits have their own Churches in some areas. Muslims also have a problem with Dalit Muslims. The Ashraf vs Ajlaf.

Then there is the issue of whether a Dalit will get reservation if he/she converts to Islam or Christianity. There is no Caste system there. So they remain a Hindu to avail the reservations and freebies that Govt showers on them.

In a massive country like India a few such incidents will happen. Th entire Indian society can't be blamed for that.

That is what exactly happened in states like Kerala. These days you find the Sangh & Associates propagating all sorts of Doomsday articles regarding the dwindling number of Hindus in Kerala (Kerala has 52% Hindus, 26% Christians & Rest Muslims the lowest majority hindu state after the North East ). But they still donot acknowledge that a major portion of the Christian converts and many muslims were lower caste and Dalit hindus, who had exposure to Cristian missions and Islamic preachers from Arabia centuries before the rest of India did !

If you were not allowed basic human rights like education, wages, decent accomodation, right to walk through roads or even the right to worship YOUR OWN gods within the premises (let alone the inside of the Mandir) , and one day you find that just changing your name and worshiping a different god gave you access to all the above as easy as that .. wouldn't you do it too ??

Reminds me of how Mr Ambani sold his Free Data / Free calls JIO sims to the whole of India !

That is one thing that gets me too . For all the talk of Jesus & Allah treating all as the same, the Dalit and lower class converts are made to pray at separate churches in India (especially in South where christianity is very old). See the case of various Christian denominations in Kerala..

The Muslims too though on a lesser extend practice similar segregation. In my state Kerala , where the Richer , Fairer Muslims (said to be descendants of Arab traders marrying locals since late 600 AD) are seen as the Purer muslims coming from "Honourable" families , while the lower caste converts are seen as lesser.

And Dalit christians and muslims get reservation in India as well. Kind of strange since these religions dont have caste ..

Uttar Pradesh: Dalit woman, unborn child killed for ‘touching’ bucket in Bulandshahr

    https://thewire.in/190933/uttar-prad...n-bulandshahr/

New Delhi: On the morning of October 15, Savitri Devi, a Dalit woman collecting garbage from homes in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district, accidentally ‘touched’ a bucket belonging to Anju, an upper caste Thakur. The innocuous incident which shouldn’t have merited any attention however triggered an attack on Savitri in the caste-stratified locality. Here’s how her neighbour Kusuma Devi described the incident: “Anju stormed towards her, punched her repeatedly in the stomach and banged her head on a wall. She kept accusing Savitri of ‘defiling’ her bucket by touching it,” reported the Indian Express. Later, she says, Anju’s son Rohit joined his mother in beating Savitri with sticks.

Savitri and her unborn child died six days later. Her husband, Dilip Kumar, said he had taken his injured wife to the district hospital the same day. But the hospital refused to treat her, taking the plea that there was no external bleeding and she was fine. On October 21, Savitri’s condition worsened and Kumar took her to hospital, where authorities declared her dead, the Indian Express report said.

On October 18, when Kumar went to file a complaint with the Kotwali (rural) police station, Tapeshwar Sagar, the SHO informed him that the police have not registered a case since since no external wounds ( ‘no injury’) were found. Two days later however, a police team visited the village and verified the assault on Savitri. An FIR was subsequently lodged.

The latest attack comes in the backdrop of the larger narrative of caste and communal violence in Saharanpur which has a population of 26% Dalits and 10% Thakurs. At a broader level, caste-related violence shows no signs of abating across the country. These attacks are channelled through outright physical attacks to verbal abuse and all kinds of upper-caste imposed cultural and spatial taboos.

Consider for instance, the string of incidents in Gujarat, in the first week of October, when three Dalit boys were attacked, allegedly by people from upper castes. Around the same time, a youth was killed in the state’s Anand district. His crime – watching garba at a temple. In the Gandhinagar district, another Dalit youth was attacked for sporting a moustache.

Absolutely abhorrent news. Can't believe that this medieval thinking regarding untouchability and caste still not just persists in the society but is leading to loss of lives.

Its always the Dalits that get the short end of the stick.

The Upper Caste and Dalit were never meant to live together. The stigma attached to Dalits will never go away. Not in the next 100 years.

Caste extremism is a common place in this nation. And who could forget the religious practice of Sathi. The misogynistic practice of wife burning, the evil British had to end it.

I think the world media needs to raise voice on this persecution of Dalits, Muslims, The tribal people of Jhakarkand, Odisha, The oppression of eastern states no need to show this false rosy image just to appease to the Hindu nationalists.

when you have no idea about other country then its better to keep mouth shut. You have no idea how sati started. Plus caste system exists but situation is much much better than past.
Caste system these days only comes during marriage mlst of the time. Out of 125 crores people , you will obviously find cases to suit some agendas.

You can get as upset as you want but the person is dead because he/she was from a lower caste. In 2017 one life lost over a caste is too many.

Please don't be ignorant. Caste system well and truly not just exists in this country, it is thriving. It's still a major factor which decides elections in this country. Thousands of people can be gathered in the name of a reservation agitation many times leading to violence and loss of property.. and that's just in Urban India 2017.

In rural, Untouchability is as big an issue as ever. You can't visit a temple if you're of a certain caste, can't take water from a well if you're of a certain caste, can't attend schools etc etc, the examples are endless. The systematic segregation still pretty much exists which very often leads to senseless violence like this case.

I know that guy was exaggerating it by adding in everything from Jharkhand and Eastern states etc etc but Casteism is an absolute reality in India 2017 and it's nowhere near vanishing.
