N Korean leader Kim Jong-il dies

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died, state-run TV has announced.

His death was announced in an emotional statement read out on national television.

The announcer, wearing black, said he had died on Saturday of physical and mental over-work. Kim Jong-il was 69 and believed to have suffered ill health for many years.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says his death will cause huge shock waves across North Korea.

His son Kim Jong-un has been suggested as a likely successor although nothing has yet been announced in the highly secretive state.

    RIP.

I don't know anything about him, apart from the comedy show (MAD TV) back in the day, where they did tons of sketches about him.

So can't say much about his government rule as others can.

There is so much propaganda and lack of trust in the media specially after seeing their performance post 9/11 that it is really hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to their reporting on North Korea. I find it hard to believe that North Koreans are as backward and easily manipulated by Kim Jon il as the western media portrays them.

Ive talked to some Koreans and they literally hate him and the restrictions he had on them

for the world cup 2010 when north korea qualified, they did not telecast the matches live and would sometime even lie to the public abt the result for days.

Things are bad in N Korea, and this will make them worse. N Korea's people desprately need food aid becaise they are starving. Kids are dieing. But it's most likely that N Korea will make some sort of strike on the South to let the world know that Kim Jong-Un is now all powerful. That's going to make any hope of help to the suffering people impossible.

Kim Jong-un, 'great successor' poised to lead North Korea

North Koreans told they 'must faithfully revere respectable comrade Kim Jong-un', Kim Jong-il's heir apparent

Kim Jong-il's death has shifted the world's focus to his likely successor, his youngest son Kim Jong-un.

If the planned succession proceeds without a hitch, the little-known, Swiss-educated Kim will be the leader of a nuclear state wracked by instability.

Reports from North Korea said the country's 24 million people had already begun to rally round Kim Jong-un, who has been the communist state's leader-in-waiting for more than a year.

Haha. The twentieth century interpretation of Marxism continues in North Korea to this day - everyone should be equal, but some will always end up more equal than others. The paradox of hard-left politics - rule which theoretically aims for total egalitarianism must be practiced authoritatively, thus is always in danger of being read as fascism or totalitarianism.

Hopefully the little fella in't a nutter.

Very eccentric person. One time he kidnapped a South Korean movie director, he apologised and then wrote 7 movies with him.

North Korean State TV are showing people weeping in the streets.

Not showing though the poor farmers whose crop has failed and are starving to death. Suspect their reaction will be much different.

However contrary to popular belief, he did introduce market reforms in North Korea along the lines of China and allowed private entrepreneurship, albeit on a small scale.

The famine in North Korea has killed up to 3 million people. North Koreans survive on 700 calories a day whereas 2000 calories is the normal food intake.

How is that your ordinary homeless and starving people.

He wasn't just opposed to the US, he was opposed to capitalism (and also Japan and South Korea), because he is a hardline communist. But since he is opposed to the US, let's just believe everything he and North Korean state TV says.

Fantastic book, based on the Soviet Union Communists but points out the hypocrisy of leaders who come in on a platform of liberty and freedom, but pursue the same tyrannical and repressive policies of old. On a side note, Joseph Stalin statistically is a bigger mass murderer than Adolf Hitler, yet he is portrayed as 'Good Old Uncle Joe' as he bailed our backsides out in the Second World War.

Thankfully, the previously favourable Western opinion of Stalin seems to be diminishing, as stories of his paranoia and tyranny become more widely known.

Operation Barbarossa (the German invasion of Russia) has long been assumed a pre-emptive strike, but there is now evidence to suggest it was formulated when German spies learnt Stalin was already mobilising an invasion of Hitler's territories. When Hitler learned of Stalin's intentions, he put affairs with Britain on hold and switched his focus to the Eastern Front. If Stalin had struck first, Europe could have been a very different place! Who knows what his true intentions beyond conquering the Nazis would have been. So Stalin did, effectively, bail out the Allied forces - but it may have been by accident as opposed to design.

It's a quite amazing and more recent theory amongst historians that is gathering pace, and the relatively small timeframe between the Battle of Britain and the Battle of Moscow, two vastly different skirmishes in two very different theatres, also supports it. If proven, this would make a mockery of a lot of articles and textbooks......

The North Korean government even blocked World Cup coverage of the North Korean football team and made the press report only favourable news. Any highlights of North Korea's matches were heavily edited to ensure that they looked like the better team or that the opposition goals were all offside.

I hate Western media and would like to punch Fox News anchors repeatedly in the face but that does not mean people should fall for the North Korean media either.

Good riddance to a crazy mutha. To those comparing him to te typical African despots, this guy was a cut above.

    http://www.11points.com/news-politic...ong-il_moments

While it funny to read, his reign (as well as his father's) meant generations of Koreans have starved to death while he lives in the lap of absolute luxury. And unlike your normal despot, this guy had the world's fourth largest standing army to defend him.

    An absolute nutter.

He wasn't a nutter but a very clever man. You can be evil without being stupid. He didn't ever fly and took the train, some say was scared of flying others he was scared of being killed in a plane by a controlled act. He took over in 1995 after his father died and North Korea became the first hereditary communist nation.

He's was ill for a while and was grooming his son but it's open to question if his son will want to continue in the footsteps of the family.

A lot of it is to do with China, they use N.Korea as a type of shield against the western style democracy which is found in South Korea. Since the Korean war China understands the slow but gradual plan of the west to bring their version of democracy from South Korea into the North and later down the line into China.

Why have you linked Barbarossa and the Holocaust - have I misunderstood your post?

An interesting read that goes over some of the evidence available, there's plenty more out there too. Not sure what I believe!

He has probably been dead for weeks, even months and his son has been busy making sure the military are fully backing him.

Unfortunately i very much doubt much will change for the people of North Korea, who as most know are basically slaves.

@Whippy, can you suggest any decent reading on the suspected Soviet mobilisation before Barbarossa? I've always doubted it myself due to the appalling state the red army was in at the time, Hitlers over confidence and his contempt for the Slavic peoples. I am abit of an eastern front nut though so would always like to read some new stuff.

Edit: I see you put up a link already Whippy, nice one.

I don't think most North Koreans care that Kim has gone - considering at least 1 Million died due to famine in the 90s.
This is sad when you take account North Korea is rich in Natural resources compared to its southern neighbour but their only priority for the regime was arming the Millitary and Nuclear weapons.
I hope things change for the better now but I'm not too optimistic.

To be honest they don't really have a choice but to act like this, was the same when his father died. Abit like the stories of lengthy applause after a speech by Stalin, the first one to stop clapping would be whisked off by the KGB for an interview without coffee.

    Gents...

Viktor Suvorov is a writer, and former Soviet solider and spy, who defected to the UK during the Cold War. His appropriately named Icebreaker kicked it off I believe:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Icebreaker-W...4319677&sr=1-3

He released this one, The Chief Culprit, much more recently:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chief-Culpri.../ref=pd_cp_b_2

    See also:

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1390229/posts

Suvorov and his supporters have of course divided opinion. The Wikipedia page on the 'Soviet offensive plans controversy' is superb, as Wikipedia pages often are. It is heavily referenced and suggests a wealth of further, diverse secondary reading:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_..._and_critiques

I recommend this one to start with (hope the link works, JSTOR is restricted access though):

    - 'Operation Barbarossa - the current state of the debate' by H.W. Koch

    Hope this helps.

Like i said they don't have any choice really, if they don't react like this and also pledge total support for the new leader it could very easily lead to them being labelled as treasonous, and the penalty for treason in NK is public execution by firing squad, or the very least the rest of thier life (AND thier family) in prison camps. It is wierd and hard for most people to understand, sends shivers down my spine if i'm honest.

I hate Western media and would like to punch Fox News anchors repeatedly in the face but that does not mean people should fall for the North Korean media either.
Where do you get this information from? Do the people who report it have ever stepped foot in North Korea? You would be naive to believe everything the west specially US and Britain spew about countries who they don't have some control over. The media has already shown numerous times that it is a tool for western government propaganda and a avenue for those in power to further their agenda whether it is the upcoming war against Iran and Syria or the war in Iraq.

There have been defectors, including high ranking military/party members, there are dissidents within the country although very few in number, there are various agencies including trusted human rights groups that cross from SK into NK to secretly film and gather information. It is also possible to visit the country officially but you are accompanied by government minders at all times and they only show you what they want you to see, but that still can't hide everything, drastic food shortages, empty roads, blackouts, etc. We also know from other countries like China, russia, East Germany etc that at one time had regimes exactly like or very close to the one in NK what conditions are like in that kind of society.

You think a government that controls 100% of everyones lives is beyond a little media manipulation? I certainly don't believe everything my government and other governments say, i believe even less what news media prints and says, but there is enough independent evidence about conditions in NK.

    Reputation for being ruthless
Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il's father, commanded the1st battalion of the Soviet army's 88 brigade, made up of Chinese and Korean refugees from Japanese imperialism. Following the Soviet Union's triumph in the Second World War, the Soviet ruler Joseph Stalin searched around for someone to rule the Korean territories it had captured from Japan. Kim Il-sung was, in the words of the former Soviet intelligence officer Leonard Vassin, “created from zero.”

“Yuri Irsenovich Kim,” wrote the anonymous Soviet bureaucrat who filled out paperwork on the birth of a child in the small fishing village of Vyatskyoe in the freezing February of 1941.
He would later come to be known by other names: “the General,” “Dear Leader,” and in the 2009 constitution written to formalise his authority, “Supreme Leader.” In 2002, an official biography claimed that his birth was foretold by a swallow, heralded by a double rainbow, and greeted by a new star in the heavens.

it might be one of the oldest parties in TN but it doesn't mean that they dont suck like other parties..
they are as corrupt as other parties , but atleast our regional parties will get their 10% and do something progressive for the state

and if you think that every village has a flagpole of communists , you are mistaken.
out of 234 seats they contested only in 12 gives some view about how strong the communist ideology is
