Yeah that was a decent innings, it was an absurdly flat wicket though. I get the feeling the upcoming three-test series will force some spicy wickets, which will sort the men from the boys, on both sides

I think what really helped his game was when he was given a chance to play ODIs. It really improved him as a player overall. I'm not sure why (confidence maybe?), but his results improved drastically from 2008 on-wards.
His Test stats since he made his ODI debut are 34 matches avg of 56 and 11 100's while being the #1 ODI batter in the world.
-
23rd February 2012, 17:07 #165
yep ur right thr...also imo ODI cricket added another dimension to his test career....before he was more a grafter....now he has started playin either type of innings....aggressive sort or defensive sort acc to the situation....for eg his inning in 4th inning against aus in a test last year came at 83 runs/100 balls....say in 2006-09 i dont think he would hav pulled it off at 83......maybe more close to 55-60.....
but its great dat he can play both ways now.....dats why i say giv him some time in t20's and he can be atleast VERY GOOD thr 2....

Even if its not meant to be this thread has all the ingredients of epic jynx thread. I predict Hashim Amla failing in every of his innings in NZ and op you are partly responsible for that.

He is No.1 in ODIs and his average of 55 did not just appear out of thin air..
He worked hard for it and if there are better players than him in South Africa then why don't they have Averages and Rankings above H.Amla?
I don't understand how people can say that he is over-rated....
Those people are just simply jealous(No-Offence)..

Anyways stop derailing the thread please, this thread is about Amla and his performance in New Zealand yet you keep bringing Smith, Kallis and Abraham. :whatsupwiththat

Well you said you rate Kallis and AB above, so that's third best already.
And Smith is the one who led SA to their first test series wins in Australia and England since readmission (with bat and captaincy), has scored a zillion runs in England actually and also inspired SA to countless ODI wins across the world. A legend.
Amla? A very good fourth best.

Are you not talking about currently the best? Of course career wise Amla is a baby compared to Kallis and Smith.
I'm mostly talking about who right now based on current form/age/recent record is a better batsman.
Amla is with AB the best in ODI's. His ODI record as it stands is the GOAT. I know he hasn't played enough to call him an ATG YET but he is #1 in the ODI rankings.
Tests wise, he is probably currently their 3rd best just behind Kallis. Kallis is pretty old and was in horrible form until that 200 vs SL. I think this time next year Amla will be better than Kallis.
-
29th February 2012, 23:05 #234
It depends how you rate players. By your way he is maybe a bit higher than four. But by my way he still a four. When push comes to shove there are three players in that lineup I would rather have. That's all. No problem. And a very very good fourth it is
