Short-lists announced for LG ICC Awards 2012

South Africa duo Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander, Australia captain Michael Clarke and Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara have all been short-listed for the top honour at the LG ICC Awards 2012.

The votes have now been casted by the independent 32-person academy and these four men are the ones in the running to receive the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year at a glittering ceremony in Colombo on 15 September 2012.

In addition, all four cricketers are also short-listed for the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year at the ninth LG ICC Awards.

Sangakkara is also in contention for the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award and has been short-listed alongside India's MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, as well as team-mate Lasith Malinga.

The Twenty20 International (T20I) Performance of the year sees Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan short-listed alongside West Indies' Chris Gayle, South Africa's Richard Levi and Dilshan's compatriot, Ajantha Mendis.

Meanwhile, in the ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year short-list, ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year 2011, Stafanie Taylor, is short-listed alongside fellow West Indian Anisa Mohammed, as well as England pair of Sarah Taylor and Lydia Greenway.

Both Taylors also feature in the short-list for ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year and are joined on that list by Australia pair Alyssa Healy and Lisa Sthalekar.

This year's LG ICC Awards includes 11 individual prizes, including the LG People's Choice Award** and features the new ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year and ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year awards.

The long-lists of nominations were made by a five-man ICC selection panel chaired by former West Indies captain and current chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee Clive Lloyd. The panel also includes former international players Sri Lanka's Marvan Atapattu , Clare Connor of England, Carl Hooper of West Indies and Tom Moody of Australia,.

The short-lists were created after the individual player awards were voted for by an academy of 32 highly credentialed cricket personalities from around the world*. The academy includes a host of former players, respected members of the media as well as representatives of the Emirates Elite Panels of ICC Umpires and ICC Match Referees.

The David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year award was voted on by the 10 current Test captains and the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and is partly based on the umpires' performance statistics.

There are six nominees this year including five-time winner Simon Taufel, three-time winner Aleem Dar, along with New Zealand's Billy Bowden, Sri Lanka's Kumar Dharmasena, England's Richard Kettleborough and Australia's Rodney Tucker.

The ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year nominees short-list features New Zealand's Doug Bracewell, Sri Lanka's Dinesh Chandimal, West Indies Sunil Narine and Australia's James Pattinson.

To qualify for that award a player must be under the age of 26 at the start of the observation period and have played fewer than five Tests and/or 10 ODIs and/or five T20Is at the start of the voting period.

The ICC Associate and Affiliate Cricketer of the Year award serves to recognise and reward the efforts in all international matches of the outstanding cricketers from the teams outside the ICC Full Members.

This year's short-list sees four nominees coming from Ireland in the form of Kevin O'Brien, George Dockrell, Ed Joyce and Paul Stirling, while Dawlat Zadran of Afghanistan makes up the group.

Based on the period between 4 August 2011 and 6 August 2012, the LG ICC Awards 2012 take into account performances by players and officials in a remarkable period for the game.

That period includes such high-profile events including the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2012 held in the UAE, the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh in 2011, various rounds of the ICC Intercontinental Cup, as well as numerous Pepsi ICC World Cricket League and Championship fixtures, plus several bilateral Test and ODI series.

The LG ICC Awards ceremony is now in its ninth year and this year it will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Previous ceremonies were held in London (2004 and 2011), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006), Johannesburg (2007 and 2009), Dubai (2008) and Bengaluru (2010).

    i found this ....

Described by the ICC as awarded to the team most notable for "upholding the 'Spirit of the Game', involving respect for:
    Their opponents
    Their own captain and team
    The role of the umpires
    The game's traditional values"

how they'll select those players from hundreds of intl cricketers??
so sachin, dravid or amla or many others didnt played in "ICC spirit" ??

    ok,here is another one

This year’s five nominees for the Spirit of Cricket Award are nominated due to: “An action, moment, gesture or decision on the field of play of International cricket during the specified voting period which best reflects the Spirit of Cricket”.

The nominees include South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers, Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez, West Indies’ Kieron Pollard and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori. Information on why each of these players were nominated can be found hereon the ICC website.

but i dont see anything abt it on the website

Why are people so surprised??? It happens every single year. I called it a long time ago:

I think this LG awards also consider performance in IPL

No wonder there isnt a single Bangladeshi and Pakistani player involved. Whilst malinga and narine who hasnt done anything special in Intl cricket in the last 1 year are in some of the lists

Amla is their only because he is class, and you cant just leave him out

PAK n B'desh have always been on the wrong end @ these awards. IND gets awards because of BCCI's power & riches else even we would have been ignored inspite of good performances.

I fear this year even that best umpire award would go to some one new!

totally agree but why?? that should be the key question. Why are these two nations marginalised and not recognised? and why doesnt anyone say anything??

I guess you are hinting at religion but that is not the case, these boards are weak and don't represent their cases strongly infront of ICC. Fans & corporates should pressurize PCB who inturn should pressurize ICC and get Ajmal's name in there. Else it would be gross injustice...

no wasnt hinting about religion..just wondering why? also sri lanaks board is pretty weak but they seem to get recognition every eyar without fail..its just baffling..

I really think the fans should be the ones to raise a hooha..the baord cant be seen to interfere in these at it would be seen as sour grapes or here they go again etc..

How in the world can Ajmal not be there? Just how?

The bowler with the most test wickets and the second best average is not nominated, seriously? They should just separate the bowler's and batsmen's awards and nominate two bowlers and batsmen for the Cricketer of the year award, otherwise you'll have batsmen winning everything.

    Not fair.

    Daniel Vettori

New Zealand tour of Zimbabwe, 1st Test, 1st Nov 2011, played at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo

Zimbabwe are 302/5 in the 99th over of their second innings, with Zimbabwe requiring only 64 runs with 5 wickets in hand to win the Test.

RW Chakabva plays a ball from Vettori to mid-on. On his follow through, Vettori gets in the way of MN Waller at the non-striker's end preventing Waller from running. Vettori immediately holds his hand up to the keeper indicating that there has been a collision and implies by the gesture that he has accidentally hindered the non-striker.

As this happens, Chakabva is too far down the wicket to get back in time. The bails are taken off at the striker's end but New Zealand decide not to appeal because Vettori has got in Waller's way. This was done with the minimum of fuss.

    AB de Villiers

South Africa v Sri Lanka - 1st Test, 15 Dec 2011, played at Super Sport Park, Centurion.

South Africa are 303/7 in the 98th over of their first innings, and AB de Villiers is on 99 not out.

Thisara Perera is bowling to de Villiers, who cuts the ball to point and a sharp catch is taken by the substitute Sri Lankan fielder, Dimuth Karunaratne.

De Villiers has a brief consultation with the umpire who asks him whether he wants the decision reviewed "upstairs", de Villiers says "no" and asks the fielder whether he caught it. De Villiers accepts the fielder's word that the catch was fair and walks off.

De Villiers was out on 99. Replays show that the catch seemed to have been taken fairly but it was the type of catch that would normally have gone up to the 3rd umpire for an umpire review.

After, De Villiers said he "still backs the fielder, if he said he caught it, that's it".

    Mohammad Hafeez

Pakistan v England, 1st Test, 17th Jan 2012, played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

England are 166/8 in the 66th over of their first innings. A Rehman is bowling to Matt Prior who is on 56. Prior plays away from his body and gets an edge which falls just short of slip where Mohammad Hafeez is fielding.

The keeper gives an enthusiastic appeal starts to run down the wicket and Hafeez instinctively and immediately informs the umpire that the ball had not carried, without any fuss or bother.

    Jacques Kallis

England v South Africa - 2nd Test, 2nd Aug 2012, played at Headingly, Leeds.

South Africa are 157/3 in the 50th over of their 1st Innings, with Kallis on 19 not out. Kallis square cuts a ball from James Anderson and nicks it low to the slip cordon.

Cook lunges to his right, managed to cushion the ball into his grasp millimeters above the ground. While Kallis is walking off he questions the fielder and as he has done on a number of occasions in the previous 18 months, accepts his word and departs, without waiting for the on field umpires to discuss the catch and perhaps ask the 3rd umpire for a review.

Vettori or ABDV to win. Hafeez's & Kallis's nomination baffle me though. The ICC really is scraping the bottom of the barrel to hand out this award.

Hmmm... but Thirimanne & Jayawardene in their post-match comments alleged that Thirimanne wasn't given a warning prior to Ashwin's attempted 'Mankading'. Due to conflicting reports the ICC must have chosen to ignore that incident.

if the 'mankading' didnt materialise in a wicket, then its to be treated as a warning,no?

Ajmal should have been there in ODIs instead of Malinga. Dunno why Malinga's there. Even Sangakaara shouldn't really be there in ODIs (though in tests that's deserved).

No idea why Hafeez is in spirit, but not really sure how you measure "Spirit" anyway. The only you can work out is the very few who don't deserve it. Somehow I don't think Gayle or KP were in the mix for it for example

They should really break down it down to batsmen and bowler category and even further for bowlers, i.e.

    1) Best Fast Bowler:

    Dale Steyn (SA),
    Vernon Philander (SA),
    Stuart Broad (Eng),
    Morne Morkel (SA),
    Kemar Roach (WI).

    2) Best Spin/Slow Bowler:

    Saeed Ajmal (Pak),
    Abdul Rehman (Pak),
    Regana Herath (SL),
    Graeme Swann (Eng),
    Praveen Kumar (Ind).

that average of 27 is nothing special. Not even the best fast bowler, Finn's taking wickets at 20.

Really unfair personally. In fact that might be why it seems titled to the Sri Lankans because they've played a lot of matches this year.
