    Shikhar Dhawan: Performance Watch

I have read and heard so much about this Dhawan kid but he looked average against our pacers and against the Sri Lankans. And Pak and SL didn't even have their best bowlers in this tournament- no Vaas, Murli, Zoysa- no Akthar, Rana, Gul and Shabbir.

I really thought the kid was a good prospect after watching him in the U-19 World-Cup but even their when he came up against the Pak bowlers he did nothing.

I think you're talking about Tariq Mehmood. He's got a real dodgy action well that's what happens if you copy Murli's action.

Dhawan seemed to struggle against the moving ball so maybe he is another flat track bully who looks brilliant when the ball doesn't move.

Talking about the under 19 team, if anyone remembers the 1996 under 15 world cup in England, alot of the pakistan players from that team have played or have been talked about as future stars of pakistan. That team included:

    Taufeeq Umar
    Hasan Raza
    Bazid Khan
    Faisal Iqbal
    Yasir Arafat
    Jannisar Khan
    Kamran Akmal
    Shoaib Malik

In comparison, from the India team that beat us in the final, only Mohd. Kaif and Reetinder Sodhi have played for the senior team. Does this mean our players have improved and India's have declined or is it just that the indian selectors don't know what they're doing.

he hasn't disappeared into domestic cricket- he made his first class debut for his club only 3-6 months ago..

He hasn't scored big yet though - but scored few fifties for his team as well as convincingly beating the indian senior team for India A and scoring a high fifty.

He recently was playing in the west indies for a vice chancellor XI against south africa.

your right tariq did play but in the match vs multan tigers where he his figures were:
4 overs 29 runs and just 1 wicket
after playing this match he did not appear in the next one
its good to see tariq bowling again and soon he will get into the pakistan team

It doesn't mean anything about the Indian selectors. Very few Australian under-19 players go on to play international cricket. A lot of them fall by the sideways in their strong domestic cricket. And under 15 is much much earlier. We just don't have a very strong domestic set-up and the players that are lucky to get chosen at an early age tend to be the ones we stick to and they also get the exposure by playing outside the domestic system.

Followed his career in his early days of domestic. He, Sehwag and Gambhir were the only players I knew who played for Delhi then. Well played today lad. But unfortunately, its too late.

    or is it?
just checked he is still only 25

He has too loose technique to be successful against quality pace or spin - occasional brilliance still possible like he did against KXIP yesterday. But I guess he is no longer in selector's radar.

Ya, definitely he has loose technique, maybe he can work it out like Gambhir did. But then the batting pool is too large for him to get noticed right now.

And exactly how many of those 10 are openers barring Murali Vijay, who has had his chances in the shorter format?

He has been a part of the India A setup, has been doing reasonably well on those A tours, got picked for an ODI against Australia in Oct 2010, scored a debut duck. But with age on his side, he still has time to do well and force a comeback, especially in the shorter formats. Needs one big domestic season.

Having talent is not enough, you need to work hard to translate that talent into success. There have been many who have achieved success with limited talent and at the same time many talented ones faded away.

    Shikhar Dhawan

How have GG and VS kept him out of the team for so long?

I know the track is flat and the bowling attack isn't really the best in the world but to do what he is doing on debut... Quite a statement.

Looks good in defence. Only weakness seems to be playing off the pads. Seems to fall over himself a little.

Is he the more polished version of Imran Farhat? ;)

    Shikar Dhawan

Currently putting together one of the best debut innings I've seen.

94* from 82 balls, 20 fours. Not a single risky shot played, everything has been classy strokeplay. On pace to make the quickest debut hundred.

I'll admit, I was upset at his selection. Didn't think he deserved it after his ODI performances.

But he has certainly proved me wrong. It will be interesting to see how he handles swing though. The ball is starting to reverse a bit now.

great innings.like chaiwala,I also was skeptical about him.

he'll still fail in SA,but any of our opener will.he seems good n aggresive.

He will struggle against the inswinger. He falls over himself a little when the ball hones in on the pads.

    Fastest ever debut hundred.

Ok no chest thumping, Smithy and even Junior's efforts were quite special as they came abroad. But anyway this is a good achievement for Shikhar who's always been struggling to make it at the big stage.

Agreed. I was so anti dhawan since that WI trip. He looked clueless against half decent pacers on that tour and also was very pathetic in the last year's WI-A tour. But seems to have corrected chinks in his techniques to a certain extent. Played wonderfully well for a debutant so far. Hope he continues this and goes onto make big scores consistently.

He was always going to be good in India. But I did not expect him to score the fastest century on debut. I am not so sure about his overseas prowess. He will probably go to SA after this dream start.

    Whoa!!!
Century on debut that being the fastest of all time

That's why people say to experiment with youngsters, if we had continued with Sehwag he would have again got out after scoring a 30. Now we have found 2 decent openers apart from Sehwag n Gambhir, good signs.... New openers/ Kohli/ Pujara... if we can find 1 more young batsman to replace Sachin our TEST batting line up will be back to Fab 4 days

How far Shikar Dhawan maintain his batting supremacy I do not know but as of now he has made re-entry of Shewag , Gambhir bit difficult . So he needs to keep maintaining / raising his standards to keep his position in the Indian team intact .
