Dhawan is facing some great new ball bowlers lately.

He had to face Steyn, Anderson, Starc/MJ/Rhino etc. He does not have the technique to counter the movement.

Make no mistake, he is going to come good against Pak in Adelaide (Flat) and against Lanka and other minnow attacks. We need him to fire for India to be successful.

Lately whenever India won, Dhawan has always provided some rollicking starts. I would persist with him even if he fails against Aus and Eng. We need him for other teams like Pak, Lanka, Ireland, Windies etc.

    Shikhar Dhawan

Has been quite for too long but a player of his calibre and attitude will always fight back. I am expecting a massive come back in the world cup. india might still be knocked out but Dhawan might just destroy a team apart and spoil their party.

Only question is, who will be that unfortunate team to bear the brunt of the Jaat's anger!

He is still a hack. They havent bowled well to him. He is vulnerable outside the off stump and to the short ball just like Sehwag and Gambhir. He masks his weaknesses by being aggressive like Sehwag. He tries to make the bowler think about saving runs than attacking him. Thats his reason for success. He will be found out against better teams like Aus and NZ.

I wonder how much longer Dhawan can keep his place in the test team - other than his debut innings and the tour to NZ 18+ months ago he hasn't done anything to suggest he can score runs outside of Asia or against decent attacks. His technique is suspect. I'd replace him with Lokesh Rahul or another youngster.

His current form will help India in England. If he survives 50 balls, it's a different ball game, doesn't matter where he play or what conditions are there.

'Enjoyed battles with Rashid' – Shikhar Dhawan

"One advantage that I had was that I faced him in nets for two years," said record-breaking India opener.

On Thursday, 14 June, on their first day of Test cricket, Afghanistan went to their big strength, spin bowling, as early as the ninth over.

Rashid Khan, their wunderkind leg-spinner, was brought on for the 14th. It wasn’t an over that he’ll remember particularly fondly. Struggling to settle on a length, he was taken apart by a belligerent Shikhar Dhawan. India, it would appear, had chosen attack as the best form of defence.

Khan was immediately taken for a string of three boundaries, and when he came back to bowl the 20th, he went for 20. His googly simply could not shake Dhawan.

Having successfully nullified the spin threat, Dhawan raced ahead to become the first Indian and only the sixth player to bring up a century before lunch on the first day of a Test.

The Indian opener later credited his familiarity with Khan from their time together playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League for his success against the bowler.

“Of course Rashid is a top-class bowler and I enjoyed my battles with him,” said Dhawan “Since I dominated, I enjoyed it, but as I said, he is a great bowler.

“I just went with the flow. The good thing and one advantage that I had was that I faced him in nets for two years, because we play for the same team in IPL. So, I was used to his bowling and that helped me.”

Where Dhawan went on the attack, and Murali Vijay and KL Rahul kept up the run-rate going at a good click, the final session went all Afghanistan’s way. The Indian middle order, perhaps in an attempt to not lose late wickets, played cautiously, and paid for it.

“See, each one has a different game,” said Dhawan, defending his teammates. “A team is formed of different characters – I am a different character, my game is different to what Vijay’s is.

“Some people like to step out and play and some others don’t prefer that. Each individual has his own game. My strength is to step out and play and I play accordingly.”

If Dhwaan plays the 5 tests vs England, on a good batting wicket I would expect him to win 1 game . But I wouldn't play him in typical English conditions.

The very fact that this thread has been bumped can only spell bad news for the casual observer.

Obviously he shouldn't have been picked in the first place.

Kohli always makes a trademark dumb selection per tour.

Dhawan is a big match player. One player Kohli can rely on under pressure. It's understandable if he's hoping that he somehow clicks in tests. But he just doesn't have the off stump game to open, however, India can try him at 5-6.

India has made a mistake by picking Dhawan and Rahul in top 3. There's room for one of them. Go with Rahul as opener and bring back Pujara at 3.

What now for Dhawan the test player after he fails in yet another overseas series (averaged 21 or 22)? Won’t be surprised if India select him for the WIs test matches where he’ll hit some cheap runs and then end up keeping his place in the side for the Australia tour where he’ll fail again.

Personally I think he should retire from test matches. He’s hindering the progress of this side.

He will smash a double ton against WI at home if he plays against them.

However, if Shaw plays, he will also score at least a 50 against WI on debut.

It's not like the wickets over here are like what they use to be during those wet summers years ago in addition to the new drainage systems which make batting easier. Moreover this series avoided early season conditions. When you factor these equations in you can't blame people for expecting results from him even in England but he had a poor tour unfortunately and credit must be given to the England bowlers. You do expect more from him though for a guy who has now played 34 Tests it's unacceptable for an Indan batsman to have respectable numbers in just one country in NZ outside the asian subcontinent.

I don't think he should retire from Tests but he desperately needs an extended break. Am not sure what other alternatives his team have though.

Better off if India start planning for the future and give players like Shaw and Gill a chance.

He will continue to struggle outside Asia as long as he opens the inning there.

However, in Asia, on flat surfaces, he has that ability to go big and take the game completely away from the opposition. I think time has come for India to move away from him now. He is 33 and let him do the good job in ODIs and in the next World Cup in England as well.

Get a fresh face at the top alongside KL Rahul. Pujara, Kohli and Rahane will remain the middle order as we can't completely change the whole batting lineup all of a sudden. Pandya/Vihari at 6 and a keeper at 7 should be a way to go.
