That's the problem with Indian Cricket. So many good batsman but only 11 places up for grabs. But even then you also need bowlers/keepers so 5-6 batting slots to contend with. Must be hard for Indians to be a regular batsman for country.

Much better is expected from them. Cant blame when their domestic performances has set the bar so high for them.

A 30 average in ODIs isnt bad. However consider that he is an Indian batsman, most of who boast great averages, and that he has played on flat tracks mostly, a slightly better performance is expected.

In recent times though, his performance hasnt been too bad which is good to see

I knew a lot about Pujara, and Jadeja. Infact, I was the one who really hyped the new little master kohli in his early days and he turned out to be a beast

The name rahane however was unfamiliar to me, and surely, you cant always expect a non Indians to keep track of the performances of Indian players

even ajmal is better than any current keeper batsman.

In pakistan, either you are good at batting, or keeping.....unless horrible in both. Has to do with Pakistan not having any inspirational wicket keepers in the past.

You will see youngsters longing to become the next waqar, wasim, IK, afridi, not real interest in keeping

Sanju Samson set to be youngest IPL crorepati

KOCHI: If you're an Indian Premier League (IPL) star, you don't need to play for your country to become a crorepati cricketer.

At 19 years and 58 days, Sanju Samson, the dashing strokeplayer from Kerala, is set to be the youngest entrant in the IPL's rich list after having decided to continue his association with Rajasthan Royals, who offered to retain him for another year. TOI had earlier reported that the Royals were keen to retain Samson, one of the finds of the last edition of the IPL.

IPL has created more crorepatis than good cricketers.

That is probably going to ruin his career, too much money too fast and at such a young age very easy to relax. What little I have seen of him he seemed an excellent prospect too.

IPL seems to be destroying young talent by throwing so much at them.

Sanju Samson is capable of some breath-taking shots however he really needs to work on his shot selection - hopefully that will come with age since he's still a teenager. In 2 or 3 years time he should be Dhoni's replacement in the limited overs side imo.

Yep that sense of lazy arrogance or some would say elegance about them - especially when it comes to the pull shot. Looks great when they can pull off the shots but looks completely wreck less when they get it wrong.

Sanju Samson doesn't seem very brainy (cricketing point of view).

    Has tremendous skills though.

When he tries a shot and doesn't click for 2 or 3 balls, he would try again and either hit a 6 or get out or do both.

If he learns how to use his skills, it would be amazing.

No!! But then how do you quantify something like talent?

And anyway, Akmal is 4 or 5 years older and has represented his country 160+ times. Samson has only played a dozen or so first class matches. You cannot compare the two.

Steyn to Samson, SIX, whoa! This is superb! It was full on off, Samson didn't worry if it was swinging or not, he just lifts it over long-off with a straightest of bats.. That sails way beyond the boundary.. 146 kph that was bowled at.. Incredible shot!

Indian cricket cannot lose the extraordinarily gifted Sanju Samson

    By Harsha Bhogle.

With some players, one shot is all it takes to catch the eye. With Tendulkar it was a straight drive in March 1989 at the Wankhede Stadium. It was a Ranji Trophy semi-final against Delhi and a boy was playing like he belonged in a world of men. With Ganguly it was a square drive at the Eden Gardens a year later. It was a Ranji Trophy final and he was on debut. With Sanju Samson it was a cover drive in an IPL game in Jaipur in 2013. We didnít know much about this young man and then suddenly, he played this shot. Everyone in the commentary box stopped what they were doing.

So have I just put a young man only recently out of under 19 cricket in the company of two greats? I donít know if the word will one day be placed alongside his name but he had a similar effect with the first shot I saw. And since then I look forward to his presence at the crease. And almost inevitably he plays a shot that warms my heart.

I want to see more. I want to see him batting when the ball is swinging and seaming around and testing his defence. I want to see him on a turner taking on two accurate spinners. I want to see so much more. All I have seen so far is him batting in T20 cricket but I know I am seeing someone very special. So far his batting is a bit like a little fireworks display; dramatic, eye-catching and brief but that is also the nature of the game he is playing. He will block a couple and suddenly he will launch one off the front foot over mid-wicket. Most times, it will be the shot you will remember at the end of the match.

I notice with some satisfaction that he has four first class hundreds in thirteen matches but I am uncertain of what the best scales are to weigh him in. For years, we have looked at players playing their formative years in long form cricket, growing up hearing of the legend of Test cricket and having local heroes with good first class records. But Samson is the first of a new generation that has grown up watching the IPL; who, in their impressionable years, saw India win a World T20; who are influenced by auctions and retentions. Even Virat Kohli, who called someone a youngster the other day, would have been influenced by fifty overs and four day cricket as a young man. Samson will be the first of a generation of players who will have to scale up to Test cricket rather than adjust to T20 cricket. Quinton de Kock is the first international player having to make that transition and hopefully Samson will make that move too.

I must confess to being a little disappointed watching him at the Under 19 World Cup. He should have dominated that, he should have had other teams wondering what he would do to them. A Tendulkar, who played Under 19 cricket after a first class hundred, would have been hungry, would have hit a couple of centuries. Samson played attractive cameos there too. In one game he fooled around with the bowling, hit the ball out of the stadium, then just kept slogging, was dropped a few times and got out. It was almost as he if was bored. As a young man bred on bright cameos, will he sustain the hunger to play long innings? Yes, he has a double century for Kerala, and that is a good sign, but keep your eyes open for the long innings.

At the Rajasthan Royals he is in very good hands. At 19, to get a permanent number three position in a major tournament is a luxury. But he is also in a nice club, working with the master of understated batting in Rahul Dravid who is building a little classroom there with Ajinkya Rahane the leading pupil. Can Dravid package and deliver Samson to India? Now, if you are a cricket lover, there is something to get excited by!

But it isnít just the Royals for they will only have Samson for a couple of months. The ability of the Kerala Cricket Association to nurture a very rare talent will be tested too. Tendulkar and Dravid grew up from the finest nurseries of Indian cricket, they were wonderfully looked after. And there must be something about Delhi if it could produce Sehwag and Kohli. But Kerala doesnít have a track record. Can they resist the urge to spoil him? Will egos, so rampant in administration everywhere, crush the flower that blooms there?

Sanju Samson is an extraordinarily gifted young man. So far, he looks well bred. Indian cricket cannot lose him.

Ideally should have been elected against a team like Bangladesh to test his skills.

Now he has to face much better bowlers in alien conditions to start off his career.

I hope he do gets a chance and clicks. MSD was never put under pressure to perform. All the best to this guy.

Bad form and he had very less overs to bat batting @ no.7. He was the highest scorer in our recent Aussie -A term tour.

Yes.Had a superb tour to Australia with the India A squad where he was the top scorer and subsequently selected to Indian team to England.Dropped without getting a game.In these zonal games south zone is actually wasting him by batting him at seven.Don't know why hacks like binny are send ahead of samson.

I strongly feel Dhoni does not want Samson in the side as his own position will be in threat if SS plays well. There is no logical explanation for picking a 30 year useless player like Saha as the backup keeper..

Only way Samson makes it into the Indian squad and gets a game is when Dhoni retires and Kohli comes in as captain.

Saha is much better keeper than even Dhoni.Samson OTOH is a part time keeper, doesnt keep for Kerala.

It was telecasted by an online cricket broadcaster for North American fans. You get HD highlights, HD live matches and via app you can watch them on TV(smart) as well too. But it takes time to set up on TV. I doubt it is available in your region. Some matches are only available for US and not the Canadian audience, like the current SL vs England series.........but thanks to great Chrome App makers who don't believe in capitalism, you get to watch them here too

You dont get it, Point I am making here is you shouldnt halt a young super talent like Samson with an againg Saha who has no future in the Indian side.

That doesnt mean you blood in players when they are not ready.Samson is not ready from keeping point of view, even his batting in longer format is questionable as of now.He still plays the A tours etc.

Saha is presently the best option thats what matters. And hes only 30,Its not like hes on verge of retirement

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) took a dim view of dissent shown against captain Sachin Baby by members of the state team, including India international Sanju Samson. The KCA imposed sanctions on a total of 13 players for what it deemed as "deliberate intention to defame the captain". Five Kerala team members were suspended while eight others, including Samson, were fined for their "misconduct". In a statement issued by the secretary of KCA, Sreejith V.Nair, said that on the basis of individual hearing with all the players it was clearly evident that they were involved in endangering the harmony, stability and interest of the Association and also engaged in a campaign to malign the captain.

"There was a deliberate intention to defame the captain as well as KCA. Hence, it was unanimously decided to impose suspension on five and fine eight others for their misconduct," said Nair.

Those who have been suspended for the next three one day matches and a penalty equivalent to three days BCCI match fee for one-day matches are Raiphi Vincent Gomez, Sandeep S. Warrier, Rohan Prem, Asif K and Mohammed Azharuddeen.

Those who have been fined equivalent to three days BCCI match fee for one-day matches are Abhishek Mohan, Akshay K C, Fabid Farook Ahmed, Nidheesh M D, Sanju Viswanadh (Samson), Salman Nizar, Sijomon Joseph and V.A. Jagadeesh.

The players were instructed to remit the penalty amount to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund on or before September 15 and to submit a proof of remittance.

KCA has also decided to warn the players to refrain from such activities in future and any repetition of such offence by them will invite a more severe action than the one taken on Friday.

    Yup Trivandrum.

I had hoped his temperament issues will be sorted in some seasons in domestics and he will be a serious contender to replace MS in LOI's but so far he is quite inconsistent. Still has time in his hands though.

Samson deserves a look in at least in the T20 side, if not ODI side.

With Pant struggling with bat in ODI's, it will not be a bad idea to blood in Samson. India needs these kind of attacking batsmen coming in at No.5 or 6. Our lower order hitting is pathetic.

Ishan Kishan is ahead of Samson in the pecking order for wicketkeepers. Innings like these from Samson are few and far between. Unless he shows some semblance of consistency, I don't think he deserves to play a game for India.

If consistency what matters then Pant wouldn't have played this much games for India.. btw I think if Samson get to indian team it'll be as a specialist batsman..

The thing with Pant is he's scored big runs in domestic cricket, be it in first-class or for India 'A'. I think he was the highest run getter in Ranji Trophy one season while striking at 100 and was also one of the leading run scorers in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy with one of the highest strike rates. Not to mention being the highest run scorer in that IPL season. Whether we like him or hate him, domestic performances need to be rewarded.

Sanju Samson alternative option for Rishabh Pant: Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar believes if India have to look beyond even Pant, then Kerala's Sanju Samson is the right man

Rishabh Pant has been coping criticism from all corners and but ex-cricketers and experts believe it’s a bit too harsh on the youngster, who batting at No.4, in limited overs for India has failed to put up a substantial score, getting out to rash shots and poor judgement.

One of those ex-cricketers is former India opener Sunil Gavaskar, who feels Pant will eventually rectify his mistakes and the scrutiny in the youngster is more because of the successful he has enjoyed in Test cricket.

“The way he (Pant) started his career in Tests, it was so good and it is obvious that he will be scrutinised. I think whatever is happening is for his good as he can rectify the mistakes he is making,” Gavaskar had told India Today on Thursday.

The India great was talking in reference to how the team management should be focused on investing in Pant as the first-choice wicketkeeper for ICC World T20 to held in Australia next year and opined that the veteran MS Dhoni should make his way out on is own, rather than being ‘pushed out’.

“I think he (Dhoni) should be going without being pushed out,” Gavaskar had said.

But, Pant has been struggling to make that No.4 spot his own. He has been India’s No.4 in the T20Is since February this year and has played eight times since, with a best of 65 not out against West Indies in August. However, in the remaining eight innings – Pant has totalled 38 runs with five single digit scores.

Gavaskar believes if India have to look beyond even Pant, then Kerala‘s Sanju Samson is the right man. “If I need to have an alternate option, then I will think of Sanju Samson because Sanju is a good ‘keeper as well as a good batsman,” said Gavaskar.

Kerala wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson made his way into the record books by smashing a double century against Goa in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20. Samson smashed an unbeaten 212 off just 129 balls to register the highest individual score in List A cricket by a wicket-keeper batsman. Samson got past Pakistan’s Abid Ali’s record who had scored an unbeaten 208 in Pakistan’s domestic one-day competition in 2018.

Samson’s 212 is also the highest individual score in India’s domestic one-day competition – The Vijay Hazare Trophy – bettering the record of Uttarakhand’s KV Kaushal, who had slammed 202 against Sikkim in the last edition of the tournament.

Samson became the sixth Indian to register a double hundred in List A cricket after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma (thrice), Shikhar Dhawan and KV Kaushal. Tendulkar, Sehwag and Rohit are however, the only Indians to hit double tons in ODIs. Shikhar Dhawan’s 248 came in a practice match against South Africa A in 2013.

Samson’s breathtaking innings m which included 10 sixes and 20 fours, powered Kerala to a towering 377 for 3 batting first against Goa in Elite Group A and B match at Alur.

Samson, who has been knocking on the doors of the senior Indian side for quite some time, reached his double hundred off just 125 balls, which is also the fastest by any Indian in List A cricket. He went past Shikhar Dhawan, who scored his double hundred off 132 balls. Virender Sehwag had reached his double ton against West Indies in 140 balls.

Samson 212 is also the highest individual score in a List A game by an Indian wicket-keeper. MS Dhoni’s highest score in ODI cricket is 183*.

Samson was well supported by Kerala batsman Sachin Baby who scored 129 off 135 balls.

He will be a part of 'A' team. If he does well there as he did in one innings against SA A then he can replace Pant from the limited overs team.

His problem is consistency. But Pant too hasn't delivered in LO's so spot is still open.
