He needs to go seriously and should be considered as a bowler only.

That means he replaces Ajmal or Afridi in the line up. As both Afridi & Ajmal are better bowlers than HA HA feez, he needs to be booted out of the team.

Put a decent batsman in team like Sohail or Amin instead of Hafeez & our batting will improve.

It's not rocket science, but when have the Pakistan selectors been even normal scientists when it comes to selection matters??

Do you feel Afridi will consistently give you 10 amazing overs all the time ?

Where do you go if you drop Hafeez and include Afridi as bowling all-rounder.

My only beef is , instead of being emotional be logical.

The Afridi we know , blows hot and cold. He will never give you consistentcy, be it batting or bowling.

I am okay with an all round batsmen too, but if Afridi feels the heat in a game, there is no one to stem the flow of runs.

And I get so high.. And I just can't feel it....

The only time Afridi was consistently going for runs in a series, was his last series in SA.
Hashim Amla and especially AB were tremendous against him.

But if look, in the same series, Hafeez was also going for about as many runs as Afridi.

    Exactly.

So in essence, we're saying is if Afridi is going for runs, let him keep bowling and going for runs.

    Tough luck.

I am okay with that thought too, just as long as we then don't expect too much from Afridi.
Cuz the pressure on Afridi will be to perform with the ball in every game. And you know what happens when Afridi has to perform under pressure : )

Well, if logic dictates that Hafeez should be dropped, then so should Shehzad and Jamshed right? Oh but wait...is Shehzad or Jamshed one of the Top 10 bowlers in the world? No. But the Professor is, give him some support guys....his form will change soon. Plus Jamshed is one of the most pathetic fielders i have ever seen....

Yes , we forgot that jamshed and shazad also have been playing international cricket for more than a decade and have been failing consistently.

Finally someone with logic. People are asking their topscorer since 2011 to be dropped....and a world class bowler. They seem to forget that our WHOLE team is failing!

Agreed 100%. But after that all we got is Misbah, and then a whole lot of failures. So how do we distinguish one failure from another? We see their contributions to the team....and Hafeez IMO, has big contributions in the batting, bowling and fielding departments since his return.

Well most of our players cant even bash minnows...
And I know that his form hasnt been good since the beggining of this year, exclude 2013, and you will get much better stats....Hafeez is an economical bowler in my eyes not a wickettaker.
Why dont you take out Afridi's stats in the same period, they will be worse especially his batting. What gives him a position in the team?
The stats for most of our batsmen will be absolutely pathetic, not just Hafeez. Dont blame Hafeez for our failures....blame Misbah for the negative minset that he has set in the dressing room. Seems like all our players have forgotten how to bat. Ill give you an example, look at the stats for Hafeez under Misbah, and under Afridi. You tell me the difference?

shafiq and azhar don't cut it in ODIs IMO.
Amin deserves more chances, so does Fawad Alam.
Sohaib Maqsood/Babar Azam can replace Hafeez.

Alam IMO is one of the worst players to replace Hafeez, he cant be judged on domestic performances; infact no one can. Alams bowling is almost useless in the international circuit, and batting is questionable. Amin has been given a fair amount of chances, he has shown promise but nothing of substance. The case with Sohaib and Babar is that they are talented but they have to be groomed first, not just shoved onto the international scene. The pressure of replacing a player with Hafeez's stature is BIG. It could ruin them. The problem with all these players is that they are capable batsmen, but none of them are international level bowlers. Thus it reduces our options greatly.

Pretty sure had he bowled at the death we would have won.

Hafeez is many things, but an expensive bowler he is not.

He's one of the best if not the best in the world when it comes to bowling tight overs and keeping the run rate down.

What should be done with Hafeez?

I have never been a fan of Hafeez the batsman. He has been playing for a decade now for Pakistan and still is a very inconsistent batsman. Barring the Indian tour, I can't remember if he has done anything special with his bat for us apart from a game here and there.

Nevertheless, his bowling at the same time has been very significant for us during the middle overs. He comes in, bowls his quota of overs very quietly keeping the economy rates under control and take a wicket or two on regular basis. This has been a savior facet of his position in our team, which has also given him a valid case to justify his selection on every occasion in the past 1 year or so.

At the same time, he seems to hold a very strong position in the team management and seems to be too powerful to be dropped. The way he was commanding the fielders in the penultimate overs in today's match further intimates his status. Misbah also seems to be pleased to have him along his side as Hafeez suits his style of captaincy which is more on the defensive scale.

Aren't these double standards from Misbah or selection committee to not drop Hafeez the batsman when he isn't performing but then players like Jamshed and Shafiq are immediately replaced after a few disappointing shows. If I were Malik, Akmals, Afridi, or even Farhat, I would be feeling jealous the way Hafeez is treated like a golden child!

Now if he can't be dropped from the 11, should he be rather pushed down the order, and be played like an all-rounder, ? Should the management adapt the same planning which was applied on Afridi who used to open at the start of his career but years later was asked to concentrate more on his bowling? Both Afridi and Hafeez have been batting more like tailenders recently than as genuine batsman, so why insist with Hafeez and have different policies for others?

Send your best batsman up the order. So follow Shehzad with Umar Akmal, Misbah and whoever. Then send in Hammad Azam or Hafeez. Hafeez is a good option in ODI's as he is a rich man's Nicky Boje. Hafeez is a good handy cricketer but he is not a top order batsman whereas I think he could actually do a half-decent job down the order.

Muhammad Hafeez averaging his 'average' since Jan 2012.

Has scored 906 runs in 34 matches averaging 27.45 @ sr 73. Scored 2 hundreds and 4 fifties. 253 of the 907 runs have come against ireland and BD @average 84. Exclude these runs and the mighty professor averages 21.8. But the professor super technique keeps on batting in top three.

Why doesn't he realize he is an all rounder?

1st ODI: Not playing with the bat to a ball coming in, bowled.
2nd ODI: Decent start, goes down the track to Narine, for no reason, trying to slog him for six to long on, when he knows there's a fielder there!

3rd ODI: Received a good short ball, but should've realized that both openers had gotten out pulling, so he shouldn't commit the same mistake. Debutant Haris Sohail realized this.

I don't see how his t20 captaincy hasn't been good overall

As I said before as a captain id have him over afridi and misbah any day. It's just hafeez's refusal to play down the order and afridi's spot being guaranteed for a year that complicates things. Hence why I propose the radical choice of fawad alam. He gets into the side on merit and he captains NBP in list A. I know the chances are next to nil but I can always dream

Ive seen a number of occasions where his over thinking has led to bad decisions.

I've seen him looking like a nervous wreck before an India game.

We have a good t20 side which masks the failings somewhat.

    Its not just that.

Hafeez has done things which Misbah never does.

He promoted Umar Akmal up the order. He allowed Raza Hasan to debut etc.

    Doesn't surprise me.

But it wouldn't surprise me if he then has a brain wave and sends Akmal down again.

Someone like Hafeez can give the illusion that he is doing positive things because he has lots of brain waves. .... (some will click)

The problem is that he has bad overall judgement.

That will become clear to most of pp only when he has captained for a while.

Yes he did in the World Cup but he improved against India the next series where he was the best bat from either team. Also while he over anyalses he doesn't transfer or enforce his way on to other members of the team.

As for Abdul Razzaq, he has always been my favorite player and Hafeez was wrong to drop him, that doesn't change the fact AR did himself little favors.

Give credit where's it due . We both know under misbah, rehman should have been playing and Umar would be at 7

    I did give credit.

He has an excellent cricket brain so well do plenty of good things.

Problem is that it won't be controlled or directed well. That's why he was the perfect vice captain.

Misbah's captaincy has been worse since Hafeez was silenced.

In t20 he makes runs batting at 3, it looks like when he attacks he make runs and batting 6 or 7 attacking in the last overs may be the way to go, afridi has unbalanced the team just like Malik did, cannot bowl or bat

Yes one TTF in another wise great squad. Raza Hasan is the only other omission but given the severity of his back injury and long recovery I can understand the reasons behind not selecting him.

Sohail is truly indefensible but hopefully he won't get a game

Hafeez is the archetypal substandard pakistani all rounder. We have a rich history of them:
    - Afridi
    - razzaq
    - azhar m
    - Malik.

Between the 4 of them Pakistan has been cursed by their presence for the last decade and a half.

What? Pls quote me Afridi's statement? He wasn't called on Afridi's request. In fact, Hafeez openly criticized Afridi and the team management when he was dropped after the T20 WC 2010. He failed the whole tournament. But in media Hafeez was crying that he went there to play as an opener but the management made him bat at 3. That was the excuse of his failure .

IMO, Hafeez should be the first one to be dropped after this tour. If he is not willing to bat at 6 or 7 drop him. We have a better option than him i.e Babar Azam. He bowls pretty decent off spin also.

Now it's upto Pakistan to look for a better option and release him Possibly Maqsood or Hammad, but we all know that won't happen. Pakistan should have looked at Hafeez as a stop-gap arrangement after the Spot Fixing scandal, instead they took him seriously and looked at a player who wasn't even a regular in the squad as a future captain. Imagine Dhoni getting injured, Dinesh Kartik getting a look in and doing well and then India looking at Dinesh Kartik as a future captain, doesn't happen, but it happens in Pakistan.
You sum it up right about Hafeez... I have mention in another post that this Pakistani team is built around past rejects. Misbah himself was never selected in his youth because he was never had foot or range of shots which Yousaf and Younis had... Gul was and will be a brainless bowler, was never a class of Amir and Asif... Wahab has probably the worst wrist release in the world...

The problem is we cannot build a good team with very average players as seniors...
