When Federer plays, children stop crying, couples stop fighting, and poor opponents resort to irrational delusions

Thats settled for now. He can push for one more slam and seal the deal . Nadal is done, and Djokovic though capable, still plays a more injury prone style, to keep him in top form like Fed has been able too.

Being a huge Nadal fan since 2006, I had written off Federer a long time back, but he has come back and has me converted!

Not even close to the greatest sportsman, he was butchered time and time and time again by his 2 biggest rivals when in his pomp. He has outlasted them which he deserves credit for and is not easy.

He even eluded to it a couple of times this fortnight, that his 2 rivals are what stood in his way over the last few years.

If Federer won those 20 slams in the space of 5-6 years I'd say he could be considered the greatest sportsman, but those 20 slams came over a 15 year period roughly and so he's never ever dominated the sport other than when he had mickey mouse opponents like Hewitt and Roddick.

But Federer is undoubtedly the GOAT in tennis (for men). His run has been extraordinary.

Except for the last two, its hard to agree with the former two. Its a lot easier to dominate mickey-mouse sports that has a tiny fraction of participation and thus competition as tennis.

Otherwise lets start calling the greatest hurling player to be the greatest sportsman ever too.

To me Federer and Nadal are the greatest of all time and you could argue for 1 or the other but in last 12-13 months Federer just got ahead. And #3 is probably Djokovic. We have had the 3 greatest players of all time playing in the same era it is amazing.

Jahangir Khan player a sport which very few people played compared to tennis, his achievements are overt the moon and no one will deny them but unfortunately he doesn’t stand in GOAT listings.. Only Pakistanis talk about him in GOAT listings across sports..

Phelps yes you can argue has a good case.

Marciano as in the boxer Rocky Marciano? Just because he is undefeated doesn’t make him GOAT if that’s the case Mayweather has a better record beating Connor now.. Ali is GOAT in terms of boxing and as pound for pound sugar ray eats up Marciano..

Gretzky again plays a sport which is not global..

I think winning 555 games in any sport leads you to the pinacle of any sporting GOAT standings, remember he not only did it in his own Sport, but did it in the hard ball American version too.

Agree on Marciano, however Ice Hockey is absolutely huge in North America and in Central/Eastern Europe. It's far from a minority sport, Gretzky's numbers are insane.

Similarly you'd have to put the likes of Phil Taylor (Darts) and Eddy Mercx (Cycling) in the upper echelons of sporting achievement.

Roger Federer much like Sachin has made his way into people's hearts which is what many greats fail to achieve despite the numbers. As great as his numbers are, his impact on Tennis and this generation cannot be quantified by them. He is today an inspiration to all for his phenomenal record coupled with his exemplary conduct on and off the court. Ordinary folks from all age groups and gender and celebrities flock to catch a glimpse of Federer. You just have to see the ovation he gets during the matches and after the victory yesterday. Roger Federer is pure royalty and he made it all possible through his hard work and humility.

Some despicable comments posted above and across the internet by trolls just goes to show no matter how good you are and how great your achievements are, there will always be some sad people trash talking.

Stats are not the be and end all, Marciano is an ATG but not even the best at his weight. There are so many ways you can rate the best heavyweights of all time, prime vs prime, head to head results, level of competition, best record, era, skills and size; Muhammad Ali still comes out on top as the greatest among them all.

Part from Football (Soccer) which sport is truly global? None.

So by that definition should we exclude athletes from any non-football sports?

We aren't just talking about Jahangir Khan as a true great across all sports because he's a Pakistani, we're doing it because of how dominant he was in his field.

If you're going to use the lack of competition as a reason for not including swimmers and squash players in the all time list when it comes to sport, you shouldn't bother including anyone who doesn't play football either. Other than football is there a truly global sport out there with serious competition from every continent? There isn't.

Very few people apart from Pakistanis know about Jahangir or his accomplishments.. I am not denying his accomplishment and squash is a very physically demanding sport just like tennis so to achieve what he did is extra ordinary however ultimately squash is a very minor sport compared to tennis or any other major sport..

Football is a true major global sport no doubt but other sports are Still popular and are not exactly as dead as squash.. Also GOAT is someone who is not just the best ever but also the one who inspires people to take up the sport and is a true global superstar in terms of popularity as well..

My top 5 in no particular order would be:

Ali, pele, federer, Jordan and bolt..

Phelps, Schumacher, tiger woods, maradona just miss out... however if someone Else chooses any of these 4 I can understand why they did..

Jahangir is a beastly athlete but unfortunately in terms of GOAT sportsperson list he would not even Be in top 50 of majority of people lists over the world since he played a relatively unknown sport..

Fans do flock in their masses to catch a glimpse of him, so much so that they disrespect other players, true tennis fans and of course the sport.

The jibberish you spout is the very reason why tennis needs him and his fans gone asap. I have seen so many matches involding Federer where not only is he cheered, but his opponents are booed, their service faults cheered and of course not a single sign of appreciation for the good play shown.

Everyone talks about Federer's game being the most elegant and the most iconic, but what they fail to mention is that in tennis academies all over the world right now it's Djokovic's movement and physique that is being taught and copied. It's not Federer's FH that is being taught, it's Nadal's FH. In terms of service motion and service approach it's Sampras' that's being used.

There's no disputing Federer's status as the GOAT in the open era of tennis, he is way out in front but people need to take their head out of his rear-end because it's not helping the sport.

Refer to post #117, I guess everyone has a different criteria to rate the GOAT sportsperson so if you think Jahangir is one then that is fine..

However majority of the population outside of Pakistan would not even have heard of him and certainly won’t pick him above the likes of the ones I mentioned..

Regarding cycling I can’t comment since all I know is lance Armstrong and he would have been my list of top 10 if he hadn’t failed all those drug tests..

    1. Forehand that is being taught most is actually Del Potro's forehand, because its the best forehand out there - not just in terms of power, but in terms of reliability and simplicity of motion.
This is why nobody has a forehand like the lasso-whip of Nadal but Del-Potro's 'angular hack' is common.

    2. Nobody teaches the way to be like Federer is because genius cannot be taught. Its the same reason why nobody teaches how to bowl like Warne or play like Messi.
You can only teach the common stuff- not the stuff of maestros.

    3. The service motion that is taught world-wide again, is not Sampras's service motion, its the Del-Potro/Isner service motion. Because its a 'no frills, not complicated' serve. Sampras's serve was an extreme serve, requiring perfect synchrony between leg-bend, hip rotation, shoulder rotation AND fore-arm snap. Too complex but mastery of it was why Sampras won 14 slams.

The cost of becoming a tennis player is much much higher than that of becoming a swimmer or a squash player, so maybe we should exclude tennis players from the GOAT list because kids from a poor background are never going to take the sport up are they?
