The first ever T20 WC, and it was a cracker of a carnival. SA got the organization of the tournament marvelously well. Full credit to them.
Indian team beat quite a few stalwarts and therefore the victory in the end made it even more special.

Actually it ll be a close contest between the two Indian sides. The 2013 had atleast two sluggish fielders in Ishant and Ashwin. The 2007 side was more vibrant in the field.

Yes, but 2013 CT side also had Raina, Kohli and Jadeja, who are the three best fielders India has had in long long time.

Plus 2007 good fielders Rohit and DK were part of 2013 also.

Yea i know that those sharp fielders have their say as well, but a team with more fast movers will keep the opposition on its toes more often than not.

Speaking in general about the tournament, The run out effected by R.Sharma in the SA match was superb to watch. Uthappa did his bit by sending Imran Nazir back to the pavilion when he was going great guns.

would've scored a 4/6 against any seamer with that shot, but this delivery was so paceless he got out

That was the trick...Misbah still has never figured out whether it was faster or slower delivery of Joginder. However what mattered was who held the cup few minutes later and it surely wasnt Misbah

IIRC most seniors actually opted out of this then, selectors had no choice but to send a young team. Selections did seem like BCCI/India didn't care for the tournament, but the man Dhoni is, led this team brilliantly and who can forget Yuvi and Gambhir's contribution! This paved way for younger gen in ODI cricket as well and then also unleashed the beast IPL

Yes ofc. That was indeed a good catch.
SA game was really tight and Sharma getting that run out and that catch got the side charged up at vital intervals.

Yes, but there were exceptions made for brilliant performances in the losing side.

In 2004 India-Pakistan "Jeet lo dil" series, Inzy and Sachin were awarded MOMs for 1st and 2nd ODI respectively for their brilliant centuries in losing causes.

The 2004 series had a diff flavor to it. Plus, it occured a decent time away from the t20 wc. I think the idea of picking only from winning team picked up in the mean time.

I for one agree on the part that Misbah was a deserving candidate. Like 95% sure.
His assault was left for the later part, that was what makes me take away the 5%. And quite honestly, due to the stage of a final of a world event, that 5% weighs a bit heavily.
But that shouldnt really take away the bulk of the credit from Misbah. Just that the aftertaste of that inns is bad.

As for the Indian team... The Indian team had contributed in an allround fashion. I think RP singh was a major contributor and at times did so more effectively than Pathan in the match.

I remember I was in a seafood restaurant in Hong Kong, watching into the early hours of the morning, with a bunch of other Indians. And I am allergic to seafood!

The biggest plus points from that tournament, to me:

    a) Dhoni as skipper

    b) Selectors get confidence that in form youngsters can take over seamlessly in the shorter formats at least. I think this ultimately paved the way for Ganguly and Dravid being dropped for the CB series in Australia.

    c) IPL

What a horrible, horrible day it was. We were superb throughout the tournament and fell at the final hurdle. When Misbah played this shot, most us thought it was going for four.

Took a long time to get over this loss, everyone at school was so dejected the next day and it was Ramzan as well, none of the prayers worked for us.

Most importantly, first major assignment for two young captains - Malik and Dhoni. It is amazing how different their careers turned out to be.

One is a legend and the greatest ever captain of his country 8 years on, while the other is looking to make up for the last few years and gain some respect and credibility at the age of 33.

It was fabulous week for Indians from 19th to 24th Sep. 8 years back starting with Yuvi's performance against England followed by debutant Rohit's 50 and run out against SA and again Yuvi's terrific 70(30) (the best t-20 innings) against Australia and job was done by Pathan in final.

Memorable week it was.The tournament which gave birth to IPL.

As a Pakistan fan - I would rank this as the most disappointing defeat. Just my personal opinion.

Pak v Ireland '07 was bad, Pak v Aus Test in Sydney was bad & we have had our fair share of bad defeats - but this- VS India, T20 Final, played brilliantly through the competition, thanks to Misbah had an epic comeback in the final and then to fall so short - agonizing.

Thank god we won the next one. That pic of misbah holding the trophy while smiling in the 2009 world t20 is so poetic. Almost like he is saying weve finally won what i shouldve won 2 years ago

    Pakistanis have bigger hearts

That Asif edge that went for four on the last ball of second last over was so valuable. Once that happened, I thought luck is on our side but that wasn't to be the case. One of the greatest cricketing moments in Pakistan's cricket history.

It was a sensational classic catch from Dinesh Karthik to dismiss Graeme Smith of South Africa in T20 world cup.
If Steve waugh was on field he would have said " You just caught the world Cup"
It would have been a true prediction as time would tell because at that point of time looked like India's T20 campaign was over....After the catch SA crumbled to spin.........then India beat a formidable team like Aus in SF courtesy Yuvraj 70 of 30 balls... and of course then the final which was almost won by India when they had Pakistan at 80-6 something after Afridi was taken out by Irfan Pathan. However credit to Misbah that he brought the game so close after that.

It was heartbreaking and sad, but got over it by the next day.

If Misbah just keep hitting straight then that game was Pakistan's, but he just tried to be too clever. Good thinking actually by the bowler as well to bowl a slower one because there was no pace to dink that over in any case.

I think thats what I will remember for Misbah in ODIS - the nearly guy.

I still have no idea what Misbah was thinking, thank god we won the T20 WC the next time as otherwise it would be a hundred times worse.

But we mustn't forget how the other batsmen completely choked - Hafeez, Malik, Younis and Afridi who got out to a typically terrible slog. At 77-6 it looked like game over so for us to get back into the match like that was a minor miracle in itself.

Something is called as destiny which no one can change. Pakistan would have never won that game as MS Dhoni was destined to win that tournament. What a fantastic game it was. India had jinx in ICC and tournament finals prior to that. But t20 WC win in 2007 changed everything and India went on to win 3 ICC tourneys in next 6 years like a boss. T20 WC 2007 will always be remebered as the birth of greatest Sub Continent leader - Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

This is one big tournament defeat I didn't felt least disappointed about. The only game I watched in its entirety was against New Zealand.

I was kinda done with cricket at that point till 2007 World Cup fiasco though this restored some interest

People who say they are done with cricket, usually wait for their team's next performance hoping it would rekindle their interest back in the game, and they never really go away. All it needs is one good tournament or series and their faith in humanity gets restored.

Yea this somewhat restored it but I think after the ODI WC 2007 the first series that I sort of watched was the Asia Cup 2008. Even that I guess cuz it was in Karachi.

Sometimes I wonder what was up with me during the time. There was a whole Pak tour to India in 2007 too and I have no recollection of a single ball. How could I just miss it all.

India-Pakistan tours of 2006-2007 were very boring and dull draws yielding affairs.. except Karachi and Delhi Tests, so you didn't miss much.

    I remember that!

What still bewilders me is how clueless Gul looked against RP singh earlier in the 19th over- couldn't bring bat to ball at all

An honorable mention must be give to - he hit the first ball he ever faced in international cricket for 6!

Sadly Sohail Tanvir could not turn out to be the cricketer we had all hoped for...

The ODI series when we toured India in 2007 was very very good..

The Mohali game when we chased 321 thanks to YK and Misbah remains one of our greatest ever ODI victories imo....

One of those bizzare times, when you actually do not go in a tourney with any hope. LOL all our major players had opted out of T20s and this team was picked at the last moment. MSD had never captained a team before that What an epic turn around goodness me that triumph changed Indian cricket for ever. Pre 2007 we were a joke, post 2007 one could argue we have had one of the most dangerous ODI teams ever.

Hmm.. may be individual matches.. but if the series is so one sided that the last match is a dead rubber instead of being a decider, I usually don't term the series exciting.

I dont know mate. There were 4 series in 5 years between these two teams. Felt like an overkill. There was no context to it by the end of it. Even when the relations are good and the two teams are playing each other, they shouldn't have more than a series every other year.

I personally felt that this was a more exhilarating win as compared to 2011.

In 2011 we were the favourites from the beginning, and I always felt like if we did not win in 2011, it would be huge disappointment.

But in 2007 there were absolutely no expectations. Until we beat the Oz in the Semis, I didn't even envisage us winning the tourney.

We hated ODI games before 1983 WC as well and only after that India's reaction changed towards it.

oh what a glorious evening it was in Bangalore in 2007..
Left office in Whitefield at 1:30PM.. heavy traffic and took 2 hours to reach home for a normal journey of 30 minutes as everyone was heading back home to see the final.
Watched the match with my 4 other room-mates from start till end.. had a few drinks during that and lots of tense moments. Topped it off for the night for going out for Biriyani near Hyderabad Biryani house on old Airport road. And danced with Indian flag in hand till 2 am in the morning on Bangalore streets...
    What a day .....
