Apes are not halal either ;)

on topic 'certain religion' followers shouldn't felt offended if they have read this in quran...

5-60 Shall I tell thee of a worse (case) than theirs for retribution with Allah? Worse (is the case of him) whom Allah hath cursed, him on whom His wrath hath fallen! Worse is he of whose sort Allah hath turned some to apes and swine, and who serveth idols. Such are in worse plight and further astray from the plain road.

It raises an interesting question though with regards to religious beliefs in your country. We know there is a god in the shape of a monkey and an elephant and the cow is a sacred animal. But I can't recall a similar respect for the pig in India at all.

I think Pigism did enjoy spiritual relevance for a while before muslims were able to convince Hindu folk to think again. Nonetheless, interesting point and this great discovery might just revive pigism again.

It's not a discovery. It's one scientist's conjecture about what happened. Most of the scientific community does not accept this model.

Doesn't that have something to do with odd and even number of chromosomes? A mule has an odd number, which cannot be evenly divided. Infertility isn't a necessary outcome of hybridity.

It goes without saying that when mating disparate species, this rule of thumb needs to be taken into account. Otherwise, not only will the offspring be infertile, all subsequent generations will be too. Especially if they mate with another infertile hybrid. A vicious cycle of infertility ensues.

Perhaps but I very much doubt pigs or proto pigs can mate with apes.

Species have to be reasonably close to each other to be able to even produce offspring

I would take this plausible theory any day over the concoction of a naked man and woman created out of clay banished from heaven and eventually chose to populate earth.

If you look at the mythological chronology of the avatars of Vishnu it corresponds well with the theory of evolution, firstly an aquatic form as Matsya (see other world's religious narratives where the world too comes after a worldwide deluge ; namely "out of water") and when the Golden Age/Satya Yuga ends you see that the avatars are no more (semi) animals, as in all civilizations the Golden Age equated to an era of harmony with the cosmos, and Vamana (dwarf Brahmin ) inaugurates the Silver Age/Treta Yuga, when men lost their divine/Olympian/Aryan perceptions of their own being and potentialities and began their rebellion both against the nature and animals.

And blaming Muslims when that shift happened some centuries (thousands ?) of year before Islam's birth, unexpected from a Modi fan.

Thats why i said eating habits are a dif' matter. Many hindus even eat beef but then they are kind to cows in general. To pigs however, we're never that respectful.

It's fascinating how curses cease being curses.

I recall reading Denzil Ibbetson's "Punjab Castes," which has a passage about the word "Saala" or brother-in-law.

"Saala" was originally a swear word with no association with brothers-in-law, but because it was the norm to curse one's in-laws, the word somehow ended up being the curse of choice for the brother -in-law.

Over time, it became an accepted word for the brother-in-law, with no negative connotations.

And now, it is a curse again, for the very obvious insinuation.

Yar that wasn't a dig at muslim folk,. just the fact that they were through their own beleif able to make hindus take pigs for low creatures. Passive pigophobia crept in.
That is the case the world over, I doubt it is that much linked to Islam in particular.

Cops are called pigs in America. Men are referred to as sexist pigs in England. Schwein (pig) is commonly used as a curse word in Germany. It's possibly the one topic that the majority of mankind seems to have found a mutual consensus.

why do monkeys and pigs not turn into humans anymore.

I know it sounds like a daft question and evolution is meant to be a gradual process but surely the number of monkeys anf pigs in the planet should be decreasing as they all become humans at some point or another

Pigs and Apes descended from a common ancestor probably. Humans are also part of Great apes and hence we might share similar genes and body make.

i don't understand how we share common genes with pigs
Aren't they meant to be the thickest species around

So what you're saying is great apes went on to become humans and some went on to become pigs and lesser great apes

Apes and Pigs must have been separated in the evolution tree millions of years ago.

Humans descended from apes and pigs - American geneticist

We Muslims are a complicated lot. We abhor pigs, but embrace chauvinists.

This is a common misunderstanding of evolution. Humans did not evolve from monkeys or apes. Rather, we share a common ancestor with them. This ancestor existed probably some 5 million years ago, and diverged into two lineages, one of which evolved into humans, and the other chimps/gorillas/monkeys.

Don't think the point by the scientist in question had anything much to do with Islam. And even if it did, what're you going to do about it?

I'm assuming you mean March of Progress. And actually, it does show exactly that. It's not showing humans evolving from monkeys or apes. It actually shows us evolving from ancient species' from millions of years ago which happened to look like monkeys/apes. This is again a common misinterpretation.

Pigs are among the brightest of the quadrupeds - as smart as horses and dogs.

We share common genes with everything. 30% of our DNA can also be found in jellyfish.
