KP Govt launches massive tree plantation campaign

LGRD Dept launches massive tree plantation campaign in KP

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Department on Monday launched a massive three-month tree plantation campaign across the province, with a target to plant eight million saplings.

“We have given the slogan of clean and green Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and would make all-out efforts to materialise the idea,” Provincial Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Inayatullah Khan said after launching the drive at the Local Government School, Hayatabad Town.

Secretary for Local Government Hifzur Rahman, Secretary for Local Council Board Attaur Rahman, Additional Secretary Zareeful Maani, Director General of Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) Muhammad Saleem Khan and other officers were also present on the occasion

The minister launched the drive by planting an olive sapling on the premises of the school. The drive would continue till May 17 wherein not only saplings would be planted but also green belts and centre median of roads would also be developed.

Inayatullah appealed to the media to play its role and sensitise people on the importance of the plantation drive. “People should come forward and take active part in the drive as without their support, it cannot be made successful,” Inayat said.

He said people of the province were living in a state of suffocation as bomb blasts were occurring almost every day and caused a sense of despair among the masses. “To provide a better change to our people and to create a healthy environment, this plantation campaign would play an important role,” he added.

The minister also said that maintaining parks of the province was part of the present Annual Development Plan (ADP) and the government has planned to make a comprehensive plan in this regard in the upcoming ADP.

When his attention was drawn towards the dirt at Allah Dad Park in union council 26 in the Akhunabad area of the city that questioned his statement that the government was beautifying and maintaining parks, he stonewalled the issue.

Speaking at the occasion, Secretary for Local Government Hifzur Rahman said 73 municipal committees, 26 districts councils and nine local area development authorities would be engaged in the tree plantation campaign to plant eight million saplings.

The secretary said the activity would last until May to provide workers and officials from the department in upper northern reaches of the KP to continue and complete plantation, he said. The campaign would be monitored by teams to ensure its effective implementation, he said.
