Congratulations to Pakistan women for Cricket Gold in Asian Games!

INCHEON: Pakistan women cricket brought glory to the nation on Friday after beating Bangladesh by four runs in the final of Asian Games women cricket event, Samaa reports.

Pakistan secured its first gold medal in the Asian Games after the win and the team was successfully able to defend the title.

Batting first Pakistani team scored 97 for six in their allotted 20 overs. However, the target was reduced to 43 runs in seven overs after rain interrupted the match.

But some fine bowling by Pakistani team restricted Bangladesh to 38 for nine in seven overs

Defending champions Pakistan beat Bangladesh in the women’s cricket final match at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, winning the first gold medal for the country.

Pakistan set the target of 97 runs at a run rate of 4.85 for Bangladesh, with a loss of six wickets. However, Bangladesh managed to score only 38 runs.

Bisma Maroof scored 24 runs, Syeda Nain Fatima Abidi made 18 runs while Marina Iqbal scored 14.

Sana Mir and Nida Rashid scored 10 runs each.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka beat China by five wickets to win the third and fourth position match.

On September 25, Pakistan had beat China by nine wickets in the semi-final match. A day before, Pakistan qualified for the semi-final by defeating Thailand by 51 runs.

Pakistan play in the 17th Asian Games as defending champions after winning the title back in 2010 in Guangzhou, China.

When I started following the game on cricinfo, BD needed 14 off 18 and had lost just 2 wkts, from there the PAK spinners bowled beautifully. Kept taking wickets and took the equation down to 5 off 1 ball with just 1 wicket in hand . What a fantastic comeback. Well-done.

How embarrassing considering some of the things Afridi has said about women's cricket.

    Congrats to them.

Apart from India other subcontinent female teams (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan) are pathetic and their matches should not considered as international match. They can not even score 100 in T20. They play T20 slower than test. Only 5 four in the final match. Next Asian games female cricket should be erased. What a shame for Gold, Silver and Bronze!

Not to happen again it seems

Cricket has been cut from the list of sports at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, according to reports.

With organisers keen on saving costs, the number of events for the Games in Jakarta and Palembang is being reduced from the 439 to 431, Inside the Games reported on Wednesday (April 19).

With no consensus among cricket bodies around the world on including the sport in the Olympics, the move by the Olympic Council of Asia will come as another blow to efforts to feature cricket in multi-sport events.

Cricket became a medal sport at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou with events for men and women. India didn’t send a team to either the 2010 or 2014 events, but the likes of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have been regulars. Pakistan men’s side participated in the inaugural edition, while the women have won gold both times.

The introduction of cricket in the Games saw the likes of China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand embrace the sport. Its absence now will hurt their ambitions – for China especially – and will leave a considerable hole in their calendars.

Skateboarding and surfing are other sports affected, while there will be fewer events in ju jitsu, jet ski and paragliding at the Asiad.

Cricket’s Olympic hopes have received a telling blow after the game has been excluded from the 2018 Asian Games. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has cut down the number of events for the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games and one of the disciplines to be left out was cricket. For the record, 2018 Games will have 431 events, six less than the 437 that the Incheon Asiad had in 2014.

    Setback for cricket

The OCA decision is a setback in view of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) professed interest for the inclusion of the game in the Olympic Games. So much so, the ICC chief executive Dave Richardson had declared that the world cricket body would do everything to get an entry into the 2024 Olympics. Thus, the April 24 ICC meeting, otherwise called to discuss the financial and governance reforms of the world body, could be dominated by the Asiad snub.

“We met the IOC president and we have really explored the possibilities, at least we are talking, and we are open to the opportunity if it's worthwhile to include cricket in Olympics,” Richardson said recently after his meeting with Thomas Bach in Switzerland. “If the ICC is committed then we have to overcome the hurdle of the IOC accepting cricket because there are a lot of other sports that want inclusion in the 2024 Olympics.”

    T20 most suited

The Twenty20 format has been thought to be most suited for the inclusion in the Olympics and the discipline was part of the Guangzhou (China) Asiad in 2010 and Incheon Games (South Korea) in 2014. Recently, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had expressed interest to take part in the Jakarta Games and quite a few ICC members had requested the world body to make sure the cricket stayed in the Asian Games. It is believed that the lack of interest from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take part in the Asian Games could be one of the reasons for the axe.

The BCCI has never been keen to send team to these Games and the Indian team had stayed away from Guangzhou and Incheon Asiads. Other continental teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had, however, taken part, if not in both these Games. It is understood that these teams have conveyed to the ICC their keenness to see cricket at the Asian Games. The world body will now have to listen to what the members have to say before it charts its future course of action. The Dubai meeting on April 24 could be a big day for this.
