"Age fudging by players is blatant cheating, and is no different from fixing": Rahul Dravid

A very interesting speech. He talks about illegal actions, age fudging and what BCCI should be doing to get rid of this menace. Watch from 22:00 onwards.

Who knows, some players have been candid about their age, while others keep hiding it. If ICC were to implement a rule like this, medical tests will decide who gets the chop.

Brilliant speech by him, he is right, this thing should be axed. Local coaches do this at the level of 16,17 in order to get good results for their teams e.t.c

Nice to know the BCCI is conducting bone density tests on junior players to determine their correct age. A very welcome step, in the right direction.

New Delhi, Aug 8: Despite former India skipper Rahul Dravid requesting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take age-fraud issues seriously, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has decided to relax the punishment on players found guilty of fudging their age.

The previous punishment was a 2-year ban for players caught fudging their age. But as per minutes of the CoA meeting on June 29, the players will now be allowed to participate in club matches/tournaments in the second year. State associations of the board aren't willing to abide by the same.

Speaking to IANS, a senior state association functionary said that this was completely uncalled for and that it goes against the basic principle of being custodians of the sport.

"This is shocking and goes against the very principles of the sport that we are supposed to be the custodians of. Is this not enabling corruption? The BCCI has previously gone to great lengths to root out this menace and it is disappointing to see that all that is being undone," the functionary said.

Another state body official echoed the sentiment and said that there was no way that they would allow players to participate in club games before the end of the two-year ban.

"At the state association level we will not implement this relaxation because we cannot permit this apathy. Strict action is the order of the day when it comes to matters such as fudging of age," the official pointed.

The BCCI had in November last year announced that a player guilty of age-fraud will be barred for two years.

"The BCCI has a zero-tolerance policy for age fraud in sport and has taken strict action against cricketers found guilty of manipulating their date of birth certificates while registering for BCCI tournaments," said the BCCI in a statement.

"As conveyed to state associations at the start of the season, BCCI wishes to reiterate that from the 2018-19 season, any cricketer who is found guilty of tampering his/her date of birth will be disqualified and barred from participating in any BCCI tournament for a period of 2 years i.e. 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons," it added.

Interestingly, it is believed that Mumbai Indians pacer Rasikh Salam who was banned for two years for submitting faulty birth certificate to the Indian cricket board has requested the BCCI to relax his punishment as it was an inadvertent mistake.

I wish they would take it seriously in Pakistan. Every other cricketer here wants to be a youngsta beauty at 32. Just look at Azhar Ali, officially 34 years old but his son is almost 17? How is that possible. For god's sake why doesn't PCB take any action.

As always, Rahul Dravid is making a very valid point especially after overseeing the U-19 cricket for India. Age fudging gives an unfair advantage to players that are age fudging. There is a possibility of 21 or 22 year old grown men playing against 16 and 17 year old kids that are still on school and to say that they are at the same level mentally and physically is delusional to say the least.

25 year olds call themselves 19 so they can take away opportunities from actual 19 year olds.

In the past i also use to complain these fake ages and all, but when i played club for 2-3 years i realize how these guys were not wrong.

Getting into Club cricket is easy, all you have to do is pay a registration fee and your a club member.

WHats hard is getting into the professional cricketing circle. And im not even taking about first class im talking about grade 2 and department level cricket.

See the problem in Pakistan is that there are U19 and U16 trials all around the country, but after U19, there are no trials for elder cricketers.

The thing about u16 and U19 is, if you end up getting selected in your district and just play one match, you get the tag of u16 and u19, and then there is this saying that iskee cricket ab khool gai hai( his cricket has now opened), because after that grade 2 and department teams select those players immediately that have played in grade level cricket.

If you are 20 years of age, then you cant play cricket as there are no trials. There is club cricket, but club matches used to be mostly friendly, so there was no bench mark to do a comparison or analyze a player.

Yes they do have senior district trial which is for all age, but those trials are just for the sake. Only those get selected that have already been playing u16 or 19 and there nmes are known to the district from before.

A 20 year old talented club cricketer wont get selected, even if he has bowled well in the nets for the senior district trials.

ALot of players then have to reduce there ages, play on fake docs to get selected in the cricketing circle.

You see, if many of these players didnt do such things, alot of Pakistani players wouldn't not get to play.

Players like SHadab, Zeeshan Malik, Amir, Nawaz, would had not made it this far. Why? Because had htey not reduce their age they would had not got to play age grade cricket and without that cricket how would they prove themselves? No one watches or keep track of club performances here.

Its easy for guys like Dravid to make such rules or give such opinions as he got to play test, but there are mnay talented players who cant get grade 2 level because of there age problem.

Best xase study is Zeeshan Malik. In Pindi he is known to be welll in his 20s(closer to the 30 side). He was a struggling cricketer, couldnt get selected. He had to reduce his age to get in u19 and hence make a name for himself. Now look at him, he was able to prove he was a good cricketer by performing in age group cricket, showing that he could bat and then he got selected afterwards

Age fudging matters only in junior tournaments like under-19 etc. Otherwise it does not matter.
Example Misbah told his real age and he was attacked for his age for the greater part of his career. Although he performed very well, revived Pakistan Test cricket from despair of 2010 to #1 ranked.

I would imagine with Pakistan becoming digitized with NADRA, the new and upcoming crop of Pakistani talent should be free of age fudging. Especially as it would be easy for PCB to verify ages using the National IDs. I would hope as we go further into the future and digitization becomes the norm this will become less and less of an issue.

I don't know how it is done in India but if they are also digitizing, then as we move on into the 2020s, it'll become less of a problem.

Then that's the PCB's fault, they should also have Under 21 and Under 23 teams like they do in soccer.

One only ges his ID card when he crosses the age off 18. Hence, finger prints are recroded at nadra at that tim.

Before that there is B form but no finger prints are recorded.

Many players dont have B forms. And some of them make fake ones. Some even play on there little brothers name.

There are rumours of one such Pakistani player from Rawalpindi whoo has done this

Some even get their birth registration 2-3 years late on purpose

Indian Under-19 stars banned for age-fudging

    majot kalra
    shivam mavi
    nitish rana

all will be banned for up to 2 years. decision is still pending. So much for calling Pakistani players are fudgers. What a joke.

Although honestly this happens in my state club as well. I am not really surprised. Not that I condone this fraudulent act but it's funny because a lot of indian fans were mocking naseem shah and shaheen afridi for age fraud. Yes they may be older than they claim but indian players are not saints either.

I am sick of seeing this happening at the elite level.

here is the article for you guys.

Ranji Trophy | Manjot Kalra suspended for one year for age-fraud

India's U-19 batsman Manjot Kalra, who scored a match-winning hundred in the final of the 2018 U-19 World Cup, has been banned from playing the Ranji Trophy for one year due to an age fraud. While Nitish Rana has been given some time to present his documents, Shivam Mavi has been handed to the BCCI.

Young budding star Manjot Kalra has been suspended from playing the Ranji Trophy for one year by the outgoing DDCA Ombudsman after allegedly doing an age-fraud for an U-16 game. The outgoing Ombudsman Justice (Retired) Badr Durrez Ahmed ordered that Kalra would not only be banned from age-group cricket for two years but he will also not be playing Ranji Trophy this season.

Delhi vice-captain Nitish Rana has been spared at the moment giving him some time to present the documents as a proof that he has not done an age-fraud att the U-19 level. While pacer Shivam Mavi has also done an age fraud at the U-19 level, his matter has been handed over to the BCCI since he plays his senior-level cricket for Uttar Pradesh.

“I find it surprising that Manjot Kalra has been punished for the same offence that Nitish Rana is also allegedly guilty of. We couldn’t pick Manjot as it was Ombudsman’s order. He passed it at 11:30 pm at night, a day before he relinquished office. Now that’s a bit bizarre,” DDCA general secretary Vinod Tihara told PTI.

With the Ombudsman changed to Justice Deepak Verma, it will be interesting to see whether he opens up the case and begins fresh talks again, because it is perplexing that Kalra has been banned from playing senior cricket for age-fraud.

“He has been prevented from playing club matches also. Now his parents will have to appeal for a change of order in front of new Ombudsman. Till then DDCA can’t pick him for Ranji Trophy. We are helpless,” Tihara said.

Kalra was all set to replace Shikhar Dhawan in Delhi's Ranji Trophy squad but the age-fraud has changed the entire landscape of the situation and he will have to appeal to Justice Verma to review the order.

Sums up the difference between BCCI and PCB. While BCCI suspends players for age-fudging, PCB facilitates it so that a 19 year old fast bowler can be hyped as a 16 year old.

Age fudging is real in India. Especially in villages and smaller towns age fudging is rampant. It's due to the fact that there is retirement age in government jobs so people fudge their children's age so they can "earn" for longer.

Having said the above, I think age fudging is now declining, compared to my father's time who was in government and everyone in his office had fudged their age to today's time where I see no one fudged their age in my company. (Private sector)

Good to see BCCI ban the players and set a precedence. BCCI is generally very good while dealing with Fixers and now age fudgers.

As @Mamoon said above, PCB should learn and take pointers.

Yes true but this also means that indian players stated age should also now be take with a huge pich of salt not just us and their fans should stop taking pot shot at our players for this they got caught it's not like they came forward to reveal their true ages.

Credit to bcci for clamping on this and hope PCB follows suit but you would be a fool to think these are the only cases of age fudging in Indian cricket many current and past cricketers must be involved in this practice.

Many said it is no big deal as long as he performs. No it is a big deal. Deserves ban. You are stealing the platform designed for someone else which is a crime. In India it is very very easily verifiable. Not sure how they managed to get through. Because you need Birth certificate even to join the school. Unless it is forged from the beginning for different reasons it is hard to get away.

The other day i was having discussion with an sub-continental colleague & he told me his birth certificate doesn’t mention his name (just his last name) & some of his family details were wrongly recorded too - so i wondered - how do kids get enrolled in school if they don’t have proper age certificates & even if they do, how come in this age of social media such cases don’t get highlighted enough by their school mates?

There is no evidence to suggest that age-fudging is a major problem for India. Sure every now and then you might have 1-2 players with fake ages, but it is not widespread like Pakistan. You can be assured that 99% of our players have fake ages.

In Pakistan, you had players like Waqar, Saqlain, Razzaq etc. who were on their last legs at an official age of 30, clearly suggesting that they were a lot older than they claimed.

If people want to use this example to feel good or to justify the PCB-facilitated age-fudging, well then it is their choice.

How can someone born in 90s and 2000s fudge his age comfortably? Its mandatory to mention your age in the matriculation certificate. And since 2000s its mandatory to register the birth.

DDCA has to be the most stupid association to have overlooked this.

You could do that long back as there were no soft records. Now they have updated everything in computer. It is impossible to get fake certificate especially if you were born in a hospital even 30 years back. One of my relative who has "reverse age fudging" meaning his official age is more than the real age. When he went back to get the certificate with official date, they refused to give him since the hospital updated the right date of birth.

    And now they got banned.

Basically, BCCI also needs improvement to catch age fudgers ASAP. However, they are doing their bit to atleast try and catch them and ban them, unlike PCB.

I assume it will be same in Pakistan, a player like Kohli, Gambhir, Rohit etc could never fudge their age because they were born in hospitals and attended school in cities, however, players who come from small villages who were not born in hospitals but at home or small clinics can get their ages fudged by their parents.

It's not 100% players fault, their parents do it to get more time to earn money in government jobs. Will need time to be completely eradicated.

Their is also no evidence to suggest that it is an isolated case in indian cricket if Rahul Dravid is specifically talking about it in a speech at a major forum it surely is not as sporadic as you are trying to make it sound.

The point is that BCCI is a professional body with credibility unlike PCB. Hence, it is futile to accuse without evidence.

PCB not only facilities age-fudging, it facilities chucking and bends over backwards to support fixers. It does not have a shred of credibility.

They don't do it for cricket, age fudging happened because of government jobs not because of cricket. I was talking in general not specific to cricket.

Secondly, I was talking about villages where a lot of people still give home births or help of local clinics, the doctor is known throughout the village and isn't reporting to any hospital.

I know it's reduced but I still believe age fudging happens in villages. Again, not for cricket per se.

Please check why Shaw was banned again.. there was no drug issue during the U-19 , if not he would had been handed a ban then too..

Doping is much easier to check and thats why he got banned later irrespective of his excuse which I won’t mention.

Well and honestly put. Its a problem in sub continent as a whole especially in smaller towns and villages. Things have improved a bit from the extremes of 90s but still a long way to go. Its really difficult to completely eliminate this as even the modern medical procedures can tell so much and I am not sure if they can capture fudging of 1-2 years as it can fall under roam for error in the procedures and naked eye cant tell differences of 1-2 years.

Though its still better than the previous decades where difference of real age was a lot more and not many medical procedures in place.

Its good that BCCI is not sparing their upcoming stars like Mavi & Shaw (whatever reason), unlike PCB who is brushing stuff under the carpet where Naseem Shah is concerned even after Saj pointed out his real age. Its not about age-fudging being prevalent in a country or not, but what the cricket association is doing about it.

This is going to cause a chain reaction. Anyone with fake age will be terrified now.

PCB doesn’t have to do it to current players, just upcoming ones, allow them to rectify if they don’t ban ,only way SC is getting out of this mess.

    Well done BCCI!

It’s bad enough that Naseem Shah seems to have become Benjamin Button, and is still 16 after almost three years.

But I have to bite my tongue every time I write that Azhar Ali is about to be 35 and is the world’s second oldest batsman. This is the guy who says that he has sent his eldest son to be educated in England!

Wasim Khan signed off on a “34 year old” becoming the Test captain after two poor years with the bat.

Would he have done so for a 38 year old who has had two poor years with the bat?

What's wrong with age fudging there might be some circumstances where parents change their child's age.
    It's common in subcontinent.
I won't say Bcci should not ban them but they must investigate this situation in future.

Then it seems rather cruel to have sent him to England to be educated.

They should start a U23 tournament for this reason. Only ages from 19 plus to 22 year old and 365.

I believe that will solve this issue.
