Our neighbors deserve to know what Indians drive

India has big presence of Japanese cars which capture most of the market in cars segment Maruti Suzuki being the biggest of them all.

Then their are few european and american brands, and finally India has its own huge home grown automobile companies in all the segments.

Recent Delhi Auto Expo showcased a lot of new models which will be launched this year. Finally Indian car scene has matured and international players are taking it seriously too. Gone are the days of rajdoots and ambassadors. Though Bullet still going strong.

Reva was a good acquisition for Mahindra, they have turned it around and made something out of small company. since Mahindra has decided to come out of Suv and tractors segment and try new things they have done wonders.

Don't forget the collaboration of Mahindra-Renault where Mahindra actually picked up a lot and by the time Renault realized it was on losing side Mahindra already had a plan in action.Also they are a very ambitious company now unlike Tata motors,the failure of Quanto was not taken lightly by Mahindra.

The Prima is ugly as hell. Strome and Xexon are ripped off from Toyota. The SUV and the electric car just look plain ugly.

Thinking of getting a bike. But afraid as I don't know how to ride one, and in any accident the bike rider suffers the most. The better option is a car, but cannot afford one right now. Will be joining a driving school this weekend, will decide to buy one if I find it easy.

WE are long way to go agreed also as the OP already stated its not for making anyone jelly but what we have is a very good and hopefully we will improve on it.Also there is Toyota,Hyundai,Honda,Renault,Ford,Volkswagen selling well in India and we somehow don't let any jap dominate our market which tbh is a disaster for Pakistan as no one is able to penetrate the market because of their monopoly.

before you lose your poopoo...just re read what I said. I didn't say Toyo or Honda were Pakistani...nor did I say Pakistan has an automotive industry..

I work in finance so for me it all comes down to value..what I said was...people in Pakistan would rather buy a Japanese car rather than Indian (i.e invest their money in a better product)...and ppl in India would rather buy a German car over Indian.

To you second point of Mahindra and Tata being Indian companies - That is true, and no where did I say they were not...but they serve the Indian market rather than the global automotive demand. Cars manufactured in India by an Indian company are majority of times sold in India only, they have no impact on the worlds automotive supply.

Good try at taking a dig at Pakistan not having an auto industry...but anyone who has studied econ 101 would know that would be a terrible strategy..i.e to kick start an industry that has no relevance to the country, nor do we Pakistanis posses the competitive advantage to build cars. Plus the demand of cars in Pakistan doesn't require locally built cheaper options, like it does in India, hence why you have those manufacturers.

I might not be the most pro India guy on this forum...but to automatically assume I'm trying to take jabs at your automotive achievements is not what I was doing.

Pininfarina is an external designer that Ferrari has used for a few of their cars ( I can think of only 3 at the top of my head)....so it's not really a manufacturer...and yes TATA is the holding company for Jags and Ranges but that does not equate to TATA manufacturing any of those cars, or instilling their technology to build them...TATA is simply the parent company that financed these manufacturers when they were in trouble.

If TATA was manufacturing Jags, you could chest thump about it, but they are built end to end in the UK, and will always be UK automotive companies rather than Indian.

You are comparing a premium product over a commuters product.

Also Indian car market is not 100 years old like other dominant car maker countries, market just opened up and for a new country India is doing pretty good. India already has better reputation in automobiles then China. You cannot expect India to take on America, Germeny, Japan etc in just a decade of innovation while they have been in the forefront since cars were invented.

However, pound for pound Indian bikes can take on any bikemakers in the world.

Yeah Africa is where Indian companies are making money not only in automobile sector but also "beauty products" but oil prices crash has effected Nigeria which is a big market for us hopefully economic activity continues there because Latin America another market of Indian companies has also slowed down.

Get a Scooty, they are as easy to drive as a bicycle, no gears and no hassle. Now a days scooties come with power of bikes and easy to handle.

Gone are the days when scooty was a vehicle of girls, and if you cant buy a car and wont buy a motor bike then scooty is the best choice for you.

Buddy, I work for Jaguar... I know how the R&D and manufacturing structure is...
2015 Discovery sport had its 100% R&D done in Indian centers. Jags are being assembled in the Pune plant of Tata.


I am working on Jags scheduled for year 2020.. I have both a TATA ID and a JLR ID, JLR works as a full fledged subsidiary of TATA, albeit with a special status.

As for Pininfarina, it is the most legendary auto design firm in the world, and an Indian company. Its status in auto industry is something very big, and owning that is a huge deal.

He is talking about reputation of Chinese manufacturers. Many of them are often sued for blatant copying Europeans and American cars which is not exactly the case for Indian manufacturers.

Two different scenarios imo, Chinese people do sell "Things" that the world wants but in case of automobile its mostly internal for them and on comparative basis Indian automobile parts have better rep than Chinese.

You are right on other things though as such but Chinese automobile isn't big outside China neither is Indian but our reputation is improving although Chinese automobile 'market' is huge and there are many players in it.

Tata didnt finance the Jag company, they own it, entirely two different things. Tata motors are not an investment company. They way Tata has turned Jag around is amazing and a personal success for Ratan Tata who once went to owners of Jag to sell his company and they made fun of him and later he bailed them out by buying their company.

Tata didnt finance the Jag company, they own it, entirely two different things. Tata motors are not an investment company. They way Tata has turned Jag around is amazing and a personal success for Ratan Tata who once went to owners of Jag to sell his company and they made fun of him and later he bailed them out by buying their company.

Actually it was Ford who owned JLR and Ratan went to Ford owners in late 90's to sell Tata.
Ford Had bought JLR in 90's.
