    Lahore sports city

3000-acre sports complex will be built in the city

    Staff Report

LAHORE: The Punjab government and Abdul Rehman Bukhatir’s construction company signed an agreement on Friday to construct a 3,000-acre sports complex of international standards in Lahore. The sports complex would be the first such project in South Asia to be undertaken with an investment of Rs 120 billion.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi also attended the ceremony held at the chief minister secretariat. According to the agreement the construction work on this project would start immediately and the installation of sports equipment would be completed in the next four years. Elahi said that such a huge investment by a leading international figure like Abdul Rehman Bukhatir in constructing a sports city in Punjab was a historic event and is reflective of the faith that foreign investors have in President General Pervez Musharraf and the Punjab government. He said that after the project was completed the Commonwealth Games and other international sports competitions would be held there. This would also result in increased tourism in Punjab and other areas of Pakistan. Elahi said that Pakistan had extraordinary sporting talent but this wasn’t tapped for lack of inadequate training facilities. He also said the sports project would boost economic activity in Punjab and generate thousands of jobs.

Bukhatir said 10,000 houses accommodating 200,000 people would also be built besides stadiums. He said the sports complex would boast international standard sports, training and educational facilities. “The complex will generate Rs 13 billion in tax revenue when it was completed in four years.

LAHORE, July 14: The Punjab government on Friday signed an agreement with a leading Abu Dhabi group of companies headed by Abdur Rehman Bukhatar for the establishment of a sports city spread over 3,000 acres of Ravi siphon land in Lahore.

Mr Bukhatar and a senior provincial government official in the presence of Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi at his secretariat inked the agreement.

Sources said that Mr Bukhatar would develop the sports city with an investment of around $6 billion. The Punjab government has given the land for it as 30 per cent equity of the project, and would share profits with the company.

Chief secretary Salman Siddique and some other senior officials had gone to Dubai last month to finalise details of the project with Mr Bukhatar.

Stadia and other related facilities for all major sports like football, hockey, cricket, tennis and golf would be constructed over one-third of the total land in the next four years. Around 10,000 world-class modern homes or flats would also be built for 200,000 people.

The first of its kind in Asia, the project would be completed at a cost of Rs120 billion. And the city would provide Rs12 to Rs13 billion to the government of Pakistan in taxes in the first four years.

The sports city would be three times bigger than the one in Dubai and in addition to a large labour force, 2,000 people having related specialties were being engaged to launch the project immediately.

The sports city would also have shopping malls where Pakistani goods, particularly relating to sports, would be offered for sale. Foreign experts of different sports would also be engaged in coaching and training. International matches of different sports would be held, making the city focus of attention of the world sports.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said such a huge investment in Punjab by worldrenowned personages like Mr Bukhatar was a historic event. Establishment of the sports city reflected foreign investors’ confi dence in President Musharraf and the provincial government.

He said after the establishment of the sports city international sports events, including the Commonwealth Games, could be organised here. Such events would also help promote tourism not only in Punjab but also all over the country.

The chief minister said Pakistan had extraordinary sports talent, which was wasted because of lack of training facilities. With the establishment of the sports city this talent could be utilised to the fullest and Pakistani sportsmen could be able to won recognition for the country at the world level.

He said the sports city would generate economic activity at a large scale, not only promoting sports in the country but also creating employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people.

Mr Bukhatar said separate arenas would be built for major sports like football, hockey, cricket and tennis. The place would become world attraction as far as sports facilities and training of players was concerned.

this is just a ridiculous and an extravagant waste of money and would cause MASSIVE deforestation...we have very little trees and greenry as it is...

just another example of muslims lacking foresight and logic

The hundred of trillions of dollars the Arabs have thrown away since they started selling oil and the hundreds billions of dollars thrown away in Gold revenue by muslim africans such as Mansa Musa

    pathetic and saddening

It would also create hundreds of thousands of jobs both in the long term and in the short term and bring billions of dollars of investment into Pakistan.

Deforestation is sad and a big problem obviously and I would urge the Punjab gov to initiate some sort of scheme whereby they plant a tree for every single one that they chop down.

But other than that Slugger your post was a bit of a waste of space. I don't see what being Muslim has to do with this. And please do not compare us with Arabs.

there arnt many forests in suburbs of lahore it would probably be made on a field.

this sports city would open new avenues of sports in the country, it would improve our nation in the field of sports, it would just save the gov. money and let a private investor fill the hole for the gov. the benefits of sports are significant in developing the country. it would take kids off the streets and put them in a postitive enviroment. and many other benefits

and arabs are not throwing there money away they are investing it and getting a return on it so you still think they are lacking foresight and logic.

have you seen the site of the sports city? if trees aren't gonna be cut down then atleast greenry will be reduced. I had read a while back about the Punjab governor's plans for a sports complex which would include a PGA approved golf course and it was planned for right on top of a reserve forest in Punjab. I don't know if that project was stopped (probably not) or not but it was just an absolute waste of tax money and a disgrace decision considering only 5% of Pakistan forest when the average for countries is 15%

how will it improve our nation in sports?! is there a shortage of sports facilities for lahorians? if it was being constructed in balochistan that would be a different story

oh and do you really think the kids off the streets will be attending these faciliites? I don't think so buddy there is gonna be top class security on all entrances of the facilities and will only be available to the Lahore elite just like the lahore gymkhana and other elitist abundant facilities.

    yes arabs are stupid

it will generate $18 billion? you can see the future? how do you know it will? how did it get to $18 billion? $18 billion from where? $18 billion over what time period?

we don't even know if it will be finished yet and you are already certain that it will generate "$18 billion in revenue" (over what? over the lifetime of the project?) how much profit? revenue is meaningless.

I have heard all these bakwas tall tales before about the Karachi bullet train system and the Gwadar city ("Oh the future city of Pakistan" "The modern city of Pakistan" "blah blah blah blah blah" "yada yada") project that still hasn't been built yet.

well the site for sports city is on the banks of the river ravi, and the gov. havnt put any money in this project.

ofcourse there is a shortage of sports facilities in lahore, everywhere in pakistan, my 2 year old cousin knows that. the lahore gymkhanna is something else where the rich go to enjoy themselfs this is a sports city and if it was just made for the elite, the investor would make a big loss by investing $2 billion dollars on such a thing, not evey child may use it but acadamys would be setup there, schools, colleges will use it and find hidden talent in pakistan. it would also provide pitches and grounds which arnt avalible in pakistan like proper football pitches, tennish courts etc.

it will generate Rs.13 billion in TAX, annually for the gov. after its finished in 4 years.

bullet train in karachi? i havnt even heard that where did you hear it from, and gwadar port is completed, dupai ports and brought it for a big sum.
