Rahul ahead here. Babar is not lacking in ability, from what I have seen he is just as capable a batsman if not even more capable.

India are just much too far ahead when it comes to grooming players. They have the IPL which exposes youngsters to international players and teaches them most of what they need to learn for limited overs cricket which is basically batting fast and batting long. They have a strong school cricket system. Their national team has great mentors in MS Dhoni and Kohli. They mostly have a strong and settled team so they can come in with more confidence with the knowledge that they have experienced pros in their team to take responsibility.

Honestly their is very little chance of a Pakistani batsman with equal ability to an Indian batsman to do better in LOIs. Pakistani batsmen come in to a weak team from a very weak domestic structure and don't get many great mentors. Our 'seniors' don't properly know how to bat in LOIs themselves hence can't possibly teach youngsters. Babar has come in to our side and is already looking like our best batsman, he is being forced to step and do the scoring whereas the 'seniors' are disapointments. Conversely when Virat Kohli came into the Indian team they had Tendulker, Dhoni, Sehwag and Gambhir. He came in and was able to establish himself under their mentorship and guidance where responsibility lied with the seniors not the junior prospect. Our youngsters on the other hand come in the team being told,"We're doomed and you are probably our last hope, do remember that if you fail to perform the seniors can't be dropped so....". Give Babar over to India and he will most likely eventually develop into one of the finest young batsmen in world cricket.

That is not to say that Babar can't defy all odds and outdo his Indian contemporary. I wish and hope he fulfills his potential and goes on to become one of the finest players in the world. Maybe he can go on to change the tradition of Pak batting and become the pillar around which we establish a strong batting line up.

Hopefully though this tradition will break in the Test side. The transition should be smooth with youngsters coming in to replace Younis and Misbah when they retire and Asad and Azhar and hopefully Insha Allah Sami will take charge.

Option A - Dhawan out. Rahul opens with Rohit. Raina and Pandey 4 & 5 in any order.

Option B - Choice between Raina and Pandey. Not very sold on Pandey yet.

When and if MS retires...Rahul needs to dawn the gloves. Both Raina and Pandey can play.

Lokesh ahead from today given that Babar gets starts in past 2 games but can't go big, same issue in tests. Doesn't have the steely resolve yet, and why would he when he's surrounded by ****** batsmen like Hafeez, Sarfraz and Azhar.

Rahul has Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit who are all like adoptive dad's to him who take care of him throughout the week.

His shots selection is amazing, at this age he is showing great presence of mind and mentality. He can handle pressure easily it seems.

I hope he plays for India in all 3 formats along with Manish. May God bless them both with excellent future.

I agree with you. But in this rubbish batting lineup, its time he gets a promotion. It may be tough but if we give him a proper chance he can make the opener or number 3 spot his own for more than a decade.

Atm, Rahul in the lead. That epic 100 vs WI in the 200+ t20 game has put him a fair bit ahead.

Babar needs to show some more consistency and hunger to go past pretty 30s and 40s.

Lucky escape today, but should stay till the end.

Its not often Pak produces great batsmen. So the jury is still out on Babar. He is young. Loads of time he has.

At the moment it's looking like Babar Azam will surpass this Rahul merely on the basis of turning up to the game while the latter sits out injured. He's not out at the moment vs NZ, let's see how he fares tomorrow.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul can be shipped from venue to venue in the cargo hold of the plane complete with a "Fragile" sticker. Maybe that will work.

    Babar well ahead.

Rahul is way too inconsistent, seems to score a hundred or not trouble the scorers.

QdK, Mendis, Babar and Rahul could very easily join the elite batsmen in world cricket in a few years time.

Babar needs to learn how to bat with the tailenders, Rahul would have used his brain in a situation like this. He shouldn't have given strike to Amir or Imran and should have tried to reduce the deficit. He played selfishly and remained not out instead of playing smartly like Rahul.

Still early days for Babar. So, I think we can let that go for now but yes, indeed, he needs to learn how to bat with tailenders but other batsmen need to learn how to at least stay on the pitch for 50 balls.

    Babar..

Rahul can't be rated higher when he has been a hit or miss completely as of now.

Quality 90 not out from Babar..Very very impressive from young guy.

Azam will be a far better ODI batsman than KL Rahul.

Although, it'd be a real disappointment for India if Rahul isn't the better test batsmen.

the thread should be Rahul Vs Harris sohail. on who gets more injured. rather then comparing the batting.. when i last met harris back in 2014 . he looked liked he as if he has just come out of the bed and had been sick with fever for weeks..
And i m talking about the same day pakistan played against Nz in wellington.

I'm not sure about that, Rahul looks very promising in LOIs.

I'm taking a more long-term view of things. A couple of matches against Zimbabwe aren't worth much. Just like three centuries against WI shouldn't turn Azam into the next Bradman.

In the long-run, I'd imagine KL Rahul will settle into a good ODI batsman and a great test batsman.

While, Babar will be a great ODI batsman and a good test batsman.

Of course, it's just an opinion.

Jeez 2 of them haven't even settled into their teams and yet and we have calls on who's going to be better.

For all we know they fail after an impressive debut and are discarded. Its futile to make comparisons with either of them even completing 20-30 tests.

This comparison doesn't make any sense. These comparison do though

    shafiq vs rahane
    kohli vs umar akmal
    pujara vs azhar ali

Yeah, doesnt help that he gets dismissed for single digits a lot and hence the hit-or-miss tag.

Brilliant innings by Rahul today and he did get a hundred in his debut series in Australia.

Babar has played some good knocks in his brief Test career so far but now that he is batting at 3, it is time he goes the extra yard and gets his maiden hundred.

MCG and the SCG are good opportunities for him. The wicket should be docile and he has already shown that he is technically equipped to deal with the Australian pacers. It is all about temperament now.

Personally, both are my favorite upcoming young batsmen.

Compare an Indian batsman to his Pakistani counterpart and the former ends up wiping the floor with the latter. It is the sad reality of the sea of difference between the two countries when it comes to developing batsmen.

Nonetheless, Babar is a great talent and if we show the faith that we showed in Azhar and Shafiq, he will make it big. Dropping him now will be a terrible decision.

Give him at least 2 years without thinking of dropping him. You drop him now and you go back to him almost immediately because he's your best prospect. That doesn't help him or the team.

Batting position is not the issue. Babar is a top-order player and this where he has to play. When an opener debuts, he is not dropped down the order so that he is protected from the new ball, it is his job to handle it. You sink or you swim.

Wonderful logic. Babar is failing not because of his shortcomings but because he was compared to an Indian batsman.
