While PV Sindhu fought hard for a medal, many Indians googled her caste

It unmasks the irony of the 21st century like nothing else.

While PV Sindhu was training hard and pushing herself beyond her limits to get India a medal at the Rio Olympics, thousands of Indians, Google statistics show, were searching for her caste-identity.

It was first called to everyone’s attention by Vivekanand Nagarajan on his Facebook wall.

We looked up the Google Trends statistics for the term “pv sindhu caste” – the results were unsurprisingly disturbing.

The interest over past 7 days for the term “pv Sindhu caste” peaked around the time she won her semi-finals and finals.

And in the last one day, there has been a heavy search for her caste.

There were more than 150,000 searches for her caste in June, and nearly 90,000 in July.

In August, there were at least 10 times more searches for her caste compared to July. So, effectively, millions of Indians have searched for her caste so far.

And not just that. Worldwide, the search for the caste of her coach, Gopichand.

    Why are they searching?

There is the obvious explanation that Indians are caste-minded people, but there could be a hint here, an ongoing fight between people in Andhra and Telangana to claim her as their own. And to prove it, they want to know which caste she belongs to.

Did you say that caste does not exist in modern India?

http://www.thenewsminute.com/article...er-caste-48545. Very sad to see this mentality in a secular country like India surely people should look above what caste or creed people are.

Well we had a thread recently here where a lot of people were firmly and proudly saying that they would never marry out of their religion/sect/sub sect/caste/sub caste/creed, etc.

So when more than 90% of people think similar, I don't think the problem is limited to a minority section of the population.

Her caste, religion, brand of underwear or whatever else did not stop her from representing India and winning a silver in the Olympics. So what is the fuss about?

I don't know what's the fuss about here.. India is not a true secular nation it is more like a pseudo secular nation without true secularism.. Secondly lot of people still believe in caste system in India in arranged marriage people usually marry in their own caste.. This is the truth everyone knows it not sure why anyone would be surprised about hearing this news..

Not easy to find caste based on surnames all the time. Unless there is a Reddy or "Neni", it is not easy.

Nope.. it's not hard to identify. Telugus generally have a house name similar to how Tamils keep their father's name. Reddy and Naidu are common surnames but you can identify people based on their house names. For example - Daggubati, Akkineni, Nandamuri etc are all Kamma house names.

No, we will continue to be hypocrites of the highest order.

We won't marry out of our religion/sub sect/caste/subcaste/ethnicity because it will dilute the sanctity of our tribe that has been passed on from our ancestors and upheld by us for generations and will render it impure. But we will criticise the people who search for the caste of celebrities for pride.

Quite honestly the searches could have been worse. Not a big deal in looking up her caste especially considering that it sounds similar to Sidhu (Punjabi Jatt caste) and a lot of people might be curious to know more about it.

People search castes of person as they feel better about themselves in case the celebrity or athlete happens to be from the same caste or tribe.

You take any popular star (entertainment, sport..), many people search for the caste name.

Caste is still a major factor when it comes to elections too. It is something that is not going to go away anytime soon.
How many times I have seen Kamma or Reddy or Kapu caste people bigging up their movie stars just because that star is from their caste. It makes them feel proud.

I have seen messages when both Kapu as well as Velama Caste people are claiming Shuttler Sindhu.

That thread where people were supporting marrying in their own clan, ethnicity or religion was hailed by many posters here. Poor @Donnal Cozzie was made to run away from that thread.

Now when people search for a popular person to see if that person is from the same caste, religion, clan etc.., it is shameful.

The way South Indian names work is different.

Sindhu is her first name and Pursula is her last name. Venkata is a common middle name after the God Venkatesh.

Both her parents were volleyball players and had an inter caste marriage but she is 100% South Indian and she is tall (5ft 11).

Caste matters, outside these politically correct online world of Liberals, it does.

No Rajput with the Royal Bloodline is going to be happy about his daughter being married into a family of Chamars or Bhangis. That's like diluting the purity of your blood.

    Just one example.

When it really matters, nobody wants to marry their daughter to a ******/Dalit or people who do menial jobs.

Like mentioned by Deathstreak, The numbers were grossly exaggerated.

"There were a total of just 210 average monthly searches for “PV Sindhu caste”."
"Using the 10x relative ratio from Google Trends, about 2100 searches for “PV Sindhu caste” likely happened in August, not “millions” as they claim"....

Hmmmmm... agenda or ignorance? Anybody's guess

In an effort to Claim Sindhu as theirs, Andhra Government announced 3 Crore Rupees to Sindhu. Not to be outdone by Andhra, Telengana Government announced 7 Crores.

So a grand total of 10 crores just so that both Andhra and Telengana can claim Sindhu as their Girl.

Now if Kamma and Kapu and Velama Caste leaders can announce more prize money to Sindhu to claim her as their's, She and her future generations will never have to work ever again.

It seems most searches of caste came from Vijayawada (Where her parents are from), Hyderabad (where she was born).
