"My fifty would have been a hundred on any other pitch" : Ahmed Shehzad

    Ahmed Shehzad speaking on TV

On playing an international team after a while - 'I felt very good about it, in my opinion whatever happens in your life happens for the best, sometimes you have got to stay positive, sometimes you tend to see things negatively, somehow you have to remain positive'.

'I have friends and family who keep me positive throughout the ups and downs. You have got to stay positive whatever happens'.

On his 50 in the match - 'I have scored a 50, but given the amount of grass on the outfield, if this was somewhere else it would have been a 100 because you don't get value for your shots here. The ground was not prepared fully and the pitch was very slow, so you've done well'.

On the pink ball - 'Sharjah is not known for very good lights, this is the first time I've played at Sharjah with the pink ball. I did have some problem with it but it is a good thing to have, things are changing, ball is moving. At the end of the day you have got to entertain the crowd and somehow, day night matches will push the crowd to fill the crowds'.

On competition for opener's spots - 'I'm playing my cricket and focusing on cricket'.

I have no idea how this pretender of a batsman is playing for an international cricket team. That too, one of the top teams - Pakistan.

    HOW?!?!?!

On this freaking ground and pitch, ALL the hacks, poor quality bats got united and scored for fun.

    Heck:

    Adnan Akmal: 69
    Iftikhar: 63
    Shan Masood: 58
    Shehzad: 52

He's NOT even a top-3 scorer, and he's saying he's scored an equivalent of 100, is very satisfied!?! Please, keep him out, woeful bat with the worst technique out there.

Can't this guy keep his mouth shut & allow other people to praise him? He scored a painstaking 50 on a wicket, where WI scores read 174/2 .............

He needs to understand that time has changed - there is no Afridi to convey such massage to Shahriar. Remembering the days, when he was retained in T20 side after scoring 17 of 31 against BD won't help his cause.

    Big, BIG ego

If the pitch was so hard then why have 6 batsmen scored 50s, and on top of that, why do you have the lowest score and strike rate out of the 50s??

What a joke of a player

Got bowled the next ball, think he made like 10 in that innings so you can imagine the usefulness of that 6.

In comparison consider what Shan Masood had to say

"It was a good outing. every time you play against an international unit you have a chance to retake your spot in the game. Unfortunately I got run out and missed an opportunity to score big (it's the first time in first class I got run-out and this saddens me a little)"

    On West Indies test team

"Look, you cannot take any international outfit lightly, we played today with this respect. when the format changes new players come and the teams feel fresh. And since we are fighting for the Number 1 spot, we need to win as much as possible and for that we've to take every team very seriously"

Definitely, but his interview contains two bad signs for the Dubai Test.

He says that the lush outfield prevented him from getting full value for shots.

But he doesn't say that the actual wicket was green or tricky.

It's obvious that they are overcompensating after Adelaide and are not leaving the pitch green enough. And if that happens, we will have an awful match, with no wickets but very few boundaries, as the balls gets slowed down by the thick outfield.

People think of Razzaq as a bitter pundit, but he was spot on about Ahmed Shehzad the player that grew up in the lahore circuit and in the first 2 years of international cricket is completely differ to the Shehzad we see today. he used to have all the shots in the world, now all he is is a led side hitter like Azhar Ali

Say what you will about his ability but Masood's attitude is undeniably top notch.

Really seems to work hard and apply himself, even if he never makes the grade at Test level he deserves respect for that. Conducts himself well too.

    Let's see.

Sharjah is always a heavy out field, but I guess Dubai'll be better. If it's a dry wicket, then spinners will come into play for sure, as I do believe that difference of spin quality of Yasir & Santar is not only a factor of pink ball & brown wicket. If it's a green wicket, then the match could be over in 3 days, as there'll be more dew in Dubai than Adelaide.

I think, the key factor here could be the bounce of the wicket, which is the key for Leg spinners. However, I actually won't back on Ahmed's comment much. I have seen Adnan & Inftekhar - they batted at 100+ & 60+ SR on same ground & Adnan hit 10 boundaries. So, let's wait and see.

It's ridiculous to see some of you all having a go at the lad ... Sure Shezzy's struggled in LOIs last couple of years but his test form was just fine and infact his knack to score 100s is something that is rare for a young prospect/player. 3 scores of 130+ in test cricket already and we are trashing the guy just because some perceive him to be cocky etc. And all 3 came in wins showing that he scores impact runs at the top.

Avg. of 43 as an opener in tests is damn good for our standards and he deserves to be invested in for test format but should be asked to put in the hard yards for reconsideration for selection in LOIs.

Should be the defacto back up opener in test team. Unfortunately due to his LOI failures and so called 'disciplinary' issues he got the axe from test team as well.

But no one can deny that Shehzad is one of the rare young bats to come up in years who when gets past 50 usually converts into big scores as he's shown so far. For the last couple of years really I've felt that he'd be a gun test opener but we dropped him! Thanks Haroon and co.!

People have misunderstood what Shehzad is saying here. He said the outfield had a lot of grass, not the pitch. Although this seems to take away the limelight from his technical inability, it does shed light on his other deficiency: inability to rotate strike. Using the outfield too much implies that normally, most of his runs don't come from singles.

If it wasn't for his attitude, I'd want him to be our backup opener in Test matches. He clearly comes off as arrogant in this interview though.

    That's the thing though.

Multiple guys hit 50+ on the same ground with heavy grass. What's the point of boasting how difficult it was when everyone else did the same thing?

    Agree on his deficiencies.

Who cares about his ego when he's producing the goods on the field ??? He was a winning piece and his test 100s have come in our most recent golden period of test cricket since 2014. Yet he finds himself out of the team due to his LOI struggles and conflict with previous management. Silly.

There is a reason why cricket is played with 11 guys. If he gives such arrogant interviews as part of the test team, he will tarnish the dressing room. Right now, there is no one in the test team that is "Me Me Me". However, with Shehzad, the atmosphere would completely change.

I read somewhere that he lost his father at a very young age. Mothers have a tendency to glorify their children (especially boys), whereas Fathers adopt the role of bringing them back to earth. I think most of Shahzad's arrogance stems from the absence of a Father when he was developing his personality.

Is there a video of the knock? It is quite possible the wicket was seaming around in the morning and the outfield was slow due to dew overnight. Anyway nice little knock by shezzy and hopefully he has started his road back into the national side after this 50.

The national team is not a make a wish foundation. If you are such an obvious problem for the team, you're bound to be dropped. If his father died at an early age, I sympathize for him, however, that is not an excuse.

Can clearly sense the happiness of people that he was out for 4. Clearly shows there is an agenda against him and no matter what he does he shouldn't be in the team according to some.

Makes 50 - people say shouldn't be in the team, poor strike rate, poor bowling attack, selfish innings etc

Makes low score - he's not good enough, made 4, poor batter

He is currently in a lose lose situation where he will be criticised in any situation.

What are the options left for squad? What I have noticed is, PAK youngsters are extremely defensive, when it comes to opening, therefore not many potential openers are there. Also, this guy Jaahid looked to be a decent prospect - they dropped him from 4 day playing XI. About 6 or 7 matches in UK tour was invested for him - he performed, so they picked him for List A matches in ZIM; invariably he failed, which cost him his 4 Day spot.

Moreover, they have made Maqsood Captain for whole series, which means he'll play both matches - a player, who will almost certainly never play longer game for PAK. If this is the vision of down the line Management, what Inzi & Arthur can do? Ahmed has experience, he has performed as well in past, if he has a decent FC season, he is bound to make a come back sometimes in future.

It's simple, if he makes runs consistently, gives up his attitude and stops making foolish statements like these, nobody will have an issue against him.

Actually people did not say anything. It was Shehzad who said to media that his 50 would have been a 100.

There ain't any agenda against him. He simply isn't good enough to play for Pak.

We have at least 3 players who can be backup openers. It takes a long time to test 3 potential openers, so Shehzad should be out.

Umar Amin, Jaahid, Fakhar Zaman (who isn't too great either, but certainly better than Shehzad).

Plus, Sami just started, and will play for 2-3 years at least along with Azhar.

Amin has never opened, may work in ODI, but not in Test. I have seen Fakher guy - any given day, I'll pick Ahmed as the opener for longer version than him. Jahid is the only realistic prospect, whom they are not playing - if Azhar moved down the order, PAK will need couple of back up opener & I think, Ahmed has a very good chance to make the Squad of WI tour.

Well these comments certainly aren't helping. See the way Shan spoke - don't think anyone criticised him for that despite his mediocre output with the bat and continued failings recently against England.
